that the life of Lawrence SMITH is hard to decipher from that of two other SMITHs
who resided in early Dorchester: Henry and Quartermaster John (who also had a
wife Mary). He Purchased a house and 23 acres of land (in 3 lots) from Thomas
OLIVER on 27 Mar 1650 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(8114) The house was located adjacent to his existing house and that
of Henry WITHINGTON, another direct ancestor. SMITH agreed to pay OLIVER £54
in four installments of corn and cattle. He was SMITH called a meeting of Dorchester
inhabitants to write out a court order in 1652 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay
Colony.(8115) For this warning, SMITH
was paid £1.10s. Holan (1616) suggests that this showed SMITH was quite
an influential man in Dorchester. He was Appointed, with Edward Clapp (another
relation), a viewer of fences on 13 Feb 1653 in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay
Colony.(8116) He was Served as town

David and his brother Ron used to go to Bolton Notch, walking up the railroad tracks from Manchester. The notch is made of shale stone but has a lot of garnet in it that they used to dig out of the rocks. Often they would camp out on the mountain. Once when they were about 15 and with a half dozen other boys, they went up to drink beer. Gary Widell started shining his flashlight down on Route 6. Someone called the fire department so "about 40 volunteer Bolton firemen" climbed the mountain to rescue whomever was in trouble but only found 8 drunken teenagers. "They took our beer and threw us off the mountain at about 11:00 p.m. and had the audacity to tell us not to come back again ... I think they went back to the firehouse and consumed our beer and probably still talk about it to this day." The brothers didn't stop going up to Bolton Notch however. In 1961, when Ron was a senior in high school, he and David went up to the notch in order to sneak into the drive-in theater. Ron fell off the notch and got rather hurt. He was a Constable (elected) in 1712/13 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.

Rachel DEERING on 16 Jul 1679 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.
(8211) In 1675, four months after Ebenezer's mother died, his father
George remarried the widow Mary NEWCOMB Deering. Mary's daughter Rachel DEERING,
was 15 when her mother married George SPEAR. Ebenezer, at age 20, suddenly had
a stepsister, although he probably was not even living home at this time. Four
years later, Ebenezer married his stepsister Rachel (117).
On 29 Oct 1678, Ebenezer took the Oath of Allegiance, as id his father George
on the same day (118).
Mary (Bass) Webb Copeland (daughter of John Bass and Ruth ALDEN) was born 11
Feb 1669/70 (117). She was the widow of Christopher Webb and William Copeland
(118). When she was about 48, and Ebenezer was 63, they married on 2 May 1718
in Braintree (117). Like his father, Ebenezer second marriage occurred only months
after his first wife's death. Unfortunately, it was a short marriage. Less than
a year later, Ebenezer died on 21 Mar 1719 in Braintree at the age of 64 (117).
His widow Mary was only 50.
On 10 Jan 1697/98, when Ebenezer was 43, "he signed an agreement of the
men of Braintree to defend the ancient rights of the town against the claims
of Boston." This had something to do with the fact that Braintree had purchased
land from "Boston gentlemen." Failure to take the oath carried a fine
of £5 (118).
In 1702, he sold land with a house located in Braintree's northern precinct,
now Quincy, to Nathaniel Owen (118).
In 1715, SPEAR deeded part of the farm in Braintree's southern precinct, now
Randolph, to his third son Joseph (118).
In 1717, SPEAR deeded his remaining lands to his second son Samuel and fifth
son Benjamin. Gideon SPEAR, Ebenezer's first son, did not apparently inherent
land from his father - at least during his lifetime (118).
On 24 Feb 1724/25, Ebenezer's second wife, Mary Bass Webb Copeland SPEAR, sold
the land (118). Children were: Ebenezer SPEAR,
Mary SPEAR, Samuel SPEAR,
Rachel SPEAR, Joseph SPEAR,
