bullet Ebenezer SPEAR was born on 13 Feb 1723 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (8213) He died before 13 May 1746. (8214) Parents: Ebenezer SPEAR and Hannah.

bullet Ebenezer SPEAR was born before 1780 in Sanford, York, ME. (8215) (assuming he was at least 20 when he was married). He moved in 1816 to OH.(8216) He died in 1832 in Salem, OH.(8217) Parents: Ebenezer SPEAR and Rebecca ANNIS.

bullet Edgar Warren SPEAR was born on 20 Dec 1848 in Walpole, Norfolk, MA. (1225) Parents: Israel SPEAR and Abigail (Abbie) RHOADS.

bullet Edgar Winhead SPEAR (Private). Parents: 1st Lieutenant Elmer Ernest SPEAR Representative and Susie Francis BRAY.

He married to Ruth E. FULCHER on 14 Apr 1944 in Orleans, Barnstable, MA.(4337) Elmer had a friend who lived on Cape Cod and visited there often. In the same year as Edgar was born, his father Elmer bought a summer cottage in Harwich Port, Barnstble, MA on Wah Wah Tasee Road where Edgar lived every summer until he was 20. It was the first house on that road when it was built. The garage was later remodeled into a three-bedroom cottage. In 1949, when Elmer had been died for 15 years, Susie sold the house for $3000 but kept the cottage (197).

In 1929, when Edgar was 12, he was having trouble reading in school. This later caused him to be held back in 8th grade (it was diagnosed as dyslexia when Edgar was 67). Edgar had Lindberg's picture on his wall. After the market crashed, an employee at his father's bank absconded with enough money to force the bank to call its mortgages. The family could not come up with the money and lost the house on Locust Street. They moved into the Harwich Port cottage and stayed there two years. Edgar was very unhappy about this initially but later enjoyed the next two years. Edgar had a few jobs during this time. He trapped skunks and obtained 50¢ to $1.50 per skunk (197).

In 1931, the family moved back to Everett, renting a house on 35 Winthrop Street. A year later he bought a house on 137 Elm Street. Edgar used to help his father Elmer drop pamphlets off at people's houses when Elmer was running for public office. Elmer died in 1934 when Edgar was 17 years old (197).

During the summers when Edgar was 15 and 16, he worked at Western Union delivering messages by bicycle. Later he worked in a grocery store until he gradated from Everett High School in 1936. He then worked as a "barker" at the Tremont Theatre in Boston announcing, "Seats without waiting." He did not get home to Everett until 1 or 2am. He then obtained a job working on a farm in Oxford, ME for the summer for a friend of his mother's. He stayed on during the fall working weekends on the farm, working at the South Paris (Maine) Ski Factory during the week, and living in a rented room in South Paris (197).

In 1937, Edgar returned to work at the grocery store Harwich Port. When summer ended, he took a bus to Everett that got hit by a car on the Sagamore bridge. Edgar tore a ligament for which he received $300 in damages. This allowed him to attend the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in 1937 where Edgar majored in poultry husbandry. In 1938 he did a 6-month placement at Mayo's Duck farm in Orleans, Barnstable, MA. He returned to school in Amherst and worked at the college poultry farm until he graduated in 1939. He went back to Mayo's duck farm in Orleans until 1941 (197).

Edgar was drafted in January 1941. He was stationed with the 68th Coast Artillery at Camp Edwards on Cape Cod for nine months. Nearly 9 in 10 men in the 68th were from southern states. Edgar's wanted to be a pilot so he took advantage of an opportunity to apply for Air Corps Cadets (having met their two-year college prerequisite). Edgar was sent to Jackson, MS for primary flight training, but "washed out" due to an inability to coordinate his right hand and left foot. He was offered training as a bombardier but declined for ethical reasons. When war was declared on 7 Dec 1941, Edgar joined the Coast Guard and became a cook at various locations including a 65-foot private yacht used by the government for submarine patrol off the Cape, at Block Island, Dennis CG Station, and on the supply ship F.S. 317. While in the Coast Guard, he visited the Duck Farm at Dennis CG Station and met Ruth FULCHER. Edgar and Ruth were married ___ Apr 1944 in _____ while Edgar was still in the Coast Guard. When? On the latter, they left New York, went through the Panama Canal, were loaded in Long Beach, CA, and were in the Philippines for nine months when the war ended and Edgar was discharged in 1945. Edgar and Ruth moved into a cottage on Governor Prence Road in Eastham. Edgar worked on the duck pond and as a plumber's helper to supplement his income (197).

In 1946, Edgar took advantage of the GI Bill of rights and moved his family to an apartment in Amherst where he attended the Massachusetts School of Agriculture. The institution changed is name to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1949, so Edgar was in its first graduating class, having earned his BA in 1949. He worked at the college poultry on the weekends and as a short order cook at the State Diner where Ruth was a waitress.

After graduating from UMASS in 1949, the family moved to New Salem, MA where Edgar got a job as a vocational agriculture instructor, but was soon hired as a generic research assistant at the UMASS Poultry Department, so they moved back to Amherst on Lessy Street.

In 1952, the family moved to Bridgewater, Plymouth MA because Edgar had accepted a position as a county agent with poultry and dairy responsibilities with the Plymouth County Extension Service. He taught school in Hanover. Edgar also made $50 per week caring for 3000 hens owned by the Mayo's Duck Farm. In 1954, Ruth was visiting the Cape when pregnant and could not return home because of two hurricanes, so Thomas was bon in Hyannis. In 1957, they moved to a larger home in Hanover, Plymouth, MA (197, 222).

In 1960, Edgar became the Regional Poultry Specialist for Barnstable Bristol, Norfolk, and Plymouth Counties. As a county agent, he handled educational programs for part-time poultry farmers. Edgar met a lot of farmers and made many friends. He purchased poultry building in Hanover and raised pullets for area farmers as a sideline. He also raised broilers for another $50 per week. One year he sold enough manure to take the family to Washington, DC.

In 1968, Edgar became a member of the Old Colony Club in Plymouth. A decade later, he would become its President.

The family sold the older Eastham cottage in 1979. They sold the Hanover house in 1982, after living there for 27 years, and moved into the Eastham cottage. Edgar retired 5 Oct 1982 as Director of the Plymouth County Cooperative Extension Service. His retirement party was attended by 185 friends and coworkers. After about 1985, the family spent their winters in Florida (197).

On 1 Sep 1987 (the same year as Edgar's bone cancer operation) Edgar lost his son Peter to AIDS-related phenomena. It was a very sorrowful time for the family, "When one loses a parent you lose part of your past, but when you lose a son or daughter you lose your future." Peter left a partner named Mike in Ogunguit, ME, where memorial bench garden and sculpture were planned to be completed in 1990. Peter was 41 (197).

In 1999, Edgar and Ruth celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary at the Jail House restaurant in Orleans, MA (222).

Children were: Kathy Winifred SPEAR, Peter Ernest SPEAR, James Edgar SPEAR, Thomas Earl SPEAR.

bullet Eliezer SPEAR was born on 24 Jul 1678 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (8218) Parents: George SPEAR (Deacon) and Mary NEWCOMB.

bullet Ella Louisa SPEAR was born on 28 Sep 1852 in Walpole, Norfolk, MA. (1225) She died on 25 Apr 1865 in Norwood, Norfolk, MA. (1225) Parents: Israel SPEAR and Abigail (Abbie) RHOADS.

bullet 1st Lieutenant Elmer Ernest SPEAR Representative was born on 2 Jan 1887 in Charlestown, Suffolk, MA.(8219) (8220)(8221) His birth certificate identifies him as "Elmer Proctor Spear" (193) but I assume this is an error since entries in the family bible (196) and the many newspaper articles on Elmer call him "Elmer Ernest Spear." He moved about 1890 to Boston, Suffolk, MA.(8222) (8223) He moved in 1897 to Everett, Middlesex, MA. (8222)(8223) He resided 17 Tufts Avenue between 1897 and 1911 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (8222)(8223) He was a worked for Boston Globe, Boston Journal, Everett Republican, and Everett Herald before 1905 in Suffolk Co, MA.(8222) (8223)(8224) He was an Everette Republican employee between 1906 and 1910 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (8222)(8223) (8225) He received a degree in LL.B. degree, Northeastern Law School between 1906 and 1910 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. (8223)(8225) (8226) Some evening law school classes were held at YMCA, but Elmer graduated from Northeastern University. He was a correspondent to the Boston Globe between 1910 and 1928 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. (8226) He was an Everette School Board (elected office) between 1910 and 1929 in Everett, Middlesex, MA.(8224) (8222) (8223)(8227) (8228)(8226) In 1910, there was a special election to fill a seat caused by a resignation. Elmer and Robert Morris were both candidates but it was Elmer, at the age of 22, who became the youngest man ever elected to the Everett School Board and, at the time, the youngest elected to any school board in Massachusetts. A year later, his work had earned praise from the Boston Herald. "Elmer Ernest Spear has won for himself the name of being one of the hardest workers for the betterment of Everett schools that has been on the board for years. He has made good." Elmer was easy reelected to this position after a "vigorous" campaigning on a "publicity in school affairs" platform (114, 204, 205, 207, 217).

In 1929, Elmer announced that he would not seek reelection for an another term on the Everett School Board. He said that his law practice demanded too much time. He had served 20 years, the second longest term in board history (214).

The excuse of a demanding practice was just a ploy to cover up the real reason why Elmer left the school board. It was 1929 and the market had just crashed. An employee at Elmer's bank stole enough of the bank's money such that it was forced to call its mortgages. Elmer could not come up with the money. He lost the house on Locust Street and was forced to move into the Harwich Port cottage on Cape Cod (197)
He was a correspondant to Everette Republican between 1910 and 1930 in Everett, Middlesex, MA.(8222) (8223)(8225) He was a Lawyer between 1912 and 1929 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (8229)(8230) (1221) Elmer was admitted to the bar 20 Feb 1912. The Massachusetts State Board of Bar Examiners admitted 71 applicants and Elmer was among those featured in the Boston Globe story on the event. At this time, Elmer announced that her would open a law office in Everett square at-once. By July, when Elmer would be married, Elmer had indeed opened a law practice with his partner, Percy Gleason, who would attend Elmer's upcoming wedding (209, 210, 211). He resided 50 Linden Street between 1913 and 1924 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (7433) These dates are a minimum range. They probably lived there afterwards. While living there, the family hosted a Christmas party attended by four generations. Attending were Susie's grandmother Susan BRAY (age 71), Elmer's grandparents Thomas and Sarah Robinson, Susie's parents Fred Bray (50) and Catherine Bray (50), Elmer's parents Ralph V (54) and Nellie Spear (52), and their son Ralph Stanwood Spear (10 months) (213). He Purchased second resisidence on Wah Wah Tasee Road in 1917 in Harwich Port, Barnstble, MA. (1222) Elmer had a friend who lived on Cape Cod and visited there often. This inspired him to buy a summer cottage there where the family lived every summer for many years (197). He served as a 11th Regiment of the Massachusetts State Guard, Company K between 1917 and 1919 in World War I.(8225) Dates are approximate. He was a Massachusetts House of Representatives between 1924 and 1928 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.(1222) In 1924, Elmer Spear ran for and won a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In 1928, he announced his candidacy for reelection. He was a member of the Committee on Insurance and Committee on Legal Affairs, the most influential of the House committees at the time. He lost his reelection bid in 1930. He resided 15 Locust Street between 1925 and 1929 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (1222) This was a larger house. In 1929 they were forced to leave the house and moved into the summer residence at Cape Cod. He moved in 1929 to Harwich Port, Barnstble, MA.(1222) He moved in 1931 to Everett, Middlesex, MA. (1222) He 137 Elm Street in 1932 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (1222) He died on 6 Mar 1934 in Everett, Middlesex, MA.(1225) After a session of ill health, Elmer was admitted to Whidden Hospital for a series of treatments. He seemed to be on the road to recovery when he died of a sudden heart attack on 6 Mar 1934 at the age of 47. Obituaries were written in several area papers. "His death shocked many in the city for he appeared to be in good health and was rarely sick a day." Another reported, "A pall of gloom was cast over the city when word was announced of Mr. Spear's death." Everett Mayor Roche ordered city flags to fly at half-mast. One paper said Elmer "was a man of high character and was liked by all that knew him. He was always ready to inconvenience himself to help a friend. The "civic warrior," former legislator and champion of the "underprivileged child," "had been a factor in the civic life of Everett for more than a quarter of a century." The "throngs" of attendees at the funeral was a who's who of Everett affairs including friends, school officials, civic leaders, politicians and former Mayor Chambers, and reporters from several newspapers including the entire staff of the Everett Gazette. One paper reported, "Elmer E. Spear's memory is inscribed upon our hearts. It is written in our archives." He was buried in the family lot at Glenwood cemetery in (NATICK, ASHBY, BOSTON NORTH, OR MAYNARD). His residence had been 137 Elm Street, Everett (196, 215, 217, 218, 219). He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Middlesex, MA. (1136) Parents: Ralph Varnam SPEAR and Nellie M ROBINSON.

He married to Susie Francis BRAY on 1 Jul 1912 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (1224)(1225) (1221)(316) The elegant affair was attended by 300 including many school board representatives, Mayor Chambers, former Senator George Buttrick, and Palestine Lodge Master Charles Howe (the Master of Ceremonies). The Everett Herald called it a "brilliant social function." The honeymoon is a trip to New York, Albany, Buffalo, Canada, and Maine. At this time, Susie had been a teacher at Revere Public Schools and then Everett Public Schools (209). Elmer attended several secondary schools before Everett, from where he graduated in 1901. At Everett High School, Elmer developed superior public speaking skills, becoming Captain of Everett's undefeated joint debating team. The team won prizes in the annual speaking contests in 1904 and 1905 including a gold metal in 1904. He also played football for Everett and was part of the 1903 championship team, and would be once described as a 'football star" 28 years later. He managed the team in 1904. While at high school, Elmer worked for several newspapers including the Boston Globe, Boston Journal, Everett Republican, and Everett Herald. In 1905, Elmer graduated from Everett High School as class orator (114, 204, 214). He would later become a founder and editor of the Everett Gazette (215).

Susie joined the Everett High School Alumni and became their Treasurer. If Elmer had not met Susie by this time he would soon as he was also active in the Alumni and was also its Treasurer at one time. Perhaps they were once campaign opponents (209).

By 1911, Elmer was a member of the following social and civic organizations: the Everett Alumni (Class of 1905 President in 1911, Treasurer in 1910), Suburban High School Athletic League (President for 2 years), CKC (President for 2 years), Everett No-License League (Secretary for 6 years), Everett Board of Trade, city Registrar of Labor for 2 years, Palestine Lodge of the Masons, and Everett YMCA. He later became active in the Everett Chamber of Commerce (President), Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, US Chamber of Commerce (National Chancellor), local Kiwanis club (President and Secretary) and New England Kiwanis (Governor) (114, 204, 207, 215, 221).

In 1911, Elmer's longtime interest in the history of Everett led him to write a historical sketch of its history that appeared in the Everett Republican (114). He also earned some recognition for writing an exclusive story for the Boston Globe on the great Chelsea fire ahead the other Boston papers (210). Children were: Ralph Stanwood SPEAR, Millicent Elder SPEAR, Edgar Winhead SPEAR, Virgina Elma SPEAR.

bullet George SPEAR (Deacon) was born about 1613 in Warwickshire, England. (8232) He was born in either Sheffield or Yarmouth, England (117). He emigrated about 1642 to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (8233)(4489) George was the first SPEAR to Emigrate to New England (118). George was about 29 and came to Boston as an indentured servant. He was an indentured sevant about 1642 in Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(8234) Came to Boston as an indentured servant. He took the oath of a freeman on 29 May 1644 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.(8235) but had become a freeman at either Boston or Dorchester, Suffolk, MA (117, 228). He moved before 1647 to Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (1726)(8236) (4489) George settled in Braintree and "built a home of great solidity, helped in scores of ways in making town life strong and progressive, and reared a family in such a careful manner that its influence has been felt very widely in our country." This part of Braintree is now Quincy. He Slave or indentured servant owner Owned a Scottish indentured servant and an Indian slave he purchased for £2 between 1651 and 1676 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA. (8237) 1651: George Spear had a servant named Henry McKenney from Scotland, who was 21 years old at this time.
1676: George Spear bought an Indian boy from Captain Hull for 2 £ (the Colonial government sold Indians as slaves). The government reversed it policy two years later, reclaimed the boy, and he was taken away by the Braintree Constable. Spear petitioned, citing care and education he had bestowed and claimed the boy was taken against his will and affections. Spear said the boy was better than the best black he could have bought for 30 £ (118).

He appeared in court on 24 Jan 1653.(4487) George SPEAR provided testimony that "George Speere Aged forty yeares or theare aboutes" paid John Hardman two cows valued at £10:10 "which was for cleareinge of a debte I owed to Capt. William Tinge." It would seem that the debt was to obtain a "driftway" to allow George to drive his cattle across Tyng's land. He moved in 1662 to "Bogstow by the Indians" later Sherborne, Middlesex, MA.(8238) He signed a petition of the inhabitants "for liberty to be a town." It appears that he owned land in the area. Middlesex County, at the time, was the frontier and scene of many hostile encounters with Indians (see Appendix G: The King Phillip's War). There are no records of deeds granting SPEAR land, but it appears that he did own some property described as "George Speeres meadow neare rock Island bridge." In 1672, he sold over 100 acres in four lots to Robert Badcock of Mill Town for £50. Two lots were in the great meadow, one was on the west side of the Charles River beyond Medfield (Medfield was 5 miles from Sherborn in Norfolk County) at a place called Bogistow, and the fourth "in Natick's bounds." (118). He moved before 1688 to Sheepscot, New Dartmouth, ME.(8239) He died on 5 Sep 1688 in Sheepscot, New Dartmouth, ME.(4487) According to 118, New Dartmouth was attacked by Indians on 5 and 6 Sep 1688. Only a few inhabitants were able to reach the safety of the garrison and escaped. All of the homes and buildings were destroyed and New Dartmouth remained deserted for 30 years. There is no further record of George SPEAR suggesting that he was killed by Indians He was a Cattle Rancher in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.(4489) (4487) George Spear was a cattle rancher on a farm own by Captain William Tyng, a merchant from Boston, as his tenant. He was Baptist. (8240)

He married to Mary HEATH about 1643 in MA.(8241) (4489)(8242) Mary Health was described as "a woman of noble and helpful character." George's landlord, Captain William Tyng died in 1661. Tyng's estate was divided on 28 Mar 1661. The will provided George with a continued driftway across which to drive his cattle (118).
Children were: Mary SPEAR, Sarah SPEAR, Samuel SPEAR, Ebenezer SPEAR, Hannah SPEAR, Samuel SPEAR, Nathaniel SPEAR, Hannah SPEAR.

He married to Mary NEWCOMB on 27 Apr 1675 in Braintree, Norfolk, MA.(8243) They were married only four months after the death of George SPEAR's first wife Mary (117, 118). Pope (471) calls her Mary DEARING. It would appear that george fathered Mary at age 63. According to reference 118, George SPEAR purchased a slave during the King Phillip's War (1675 - 1676). At this time the colonial government sold Indians captured during the war as slaves and George purchased an Indian boy for £2 (the two cows George sold in 1652 were valued at £10). Two years later, however, the government reversed this policy and reclaimed the slaves. The Constable of Braintree took the boy. Spear petitioned for redress, obtained 20 nobles, and issued a petition dated 1678/79 in which he stated, "bestowed two yeers care & education to prepare him for my service which tooke good efect he being brought to be very tractable & hopefull to be very serviceable." When the Constable took him he was "sore against the boys will who cried and strove to his utmost against it & I believe rather have lost his life then to have gone from me. I had so gained on his affections. I esteemed him better than the best black that I could have bought which have cost neere £30." The boy was apparently not returned.

On 29 Oct 1678, SPEAR took the Oath of Allegiance, as did his son Ebenezer on the same day (118). What is this?

Sometime after 1679, they moved to New Dartmouth, ME (now Pemaquid, Lincoln, ME) and occupied the Gent property (117, 118).

On 21 May 21 1688, when SPEAR was about 75 years old, he sent a petition to Sir Edmund Andros, Governor of New England. He stated that his first wife's husband, John Gent, was an ancient inhabitant of New Dartmouth and had owned much land before the Indian War which was "cast away" while his family took refuge in Boston, and that he, being "very ancient" himself, having married the widow and returned to new Dartmouth after it was resettled, and bringing with him much stock, requested that his two sons, Samuel and Nathaniel SPEAR, live near him while he is alive and therefore be granted 150 acres apiece as near to New Dartmouth may be.

The plan was never enacted. On September 5 and 6 of 1688, just four moths later, New Dartmouth was attacked "by a strong force of Indians." Only a few inhabitants were able to reach the safety of the garrison and escaped. All of the homes and buildings were destroyed. New Dartmouth remained deserted for 30 years. There is no further record of George SPEAR suggesting that he was killed by Indians (118). Children were: Mary SPEAR, Eliezer SPEAR.

He married to Elizabeth GHENT after 1678 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.(8244) (8245) George SPEAR married the widow Elizabeth Gent of Sheepscot, New Dartmouth, ME, when he was 66. She had been the wife of John Gent. The marriage probably took place in Boston, where Elizabeth had taken refuge with her children during the Indian Wars.

bulletRalph Varnam SPEAR was born on 20 Feb 1860 in Walpole, Norfolk, MA. (8294)(1225) The birth date I cited was 20 Feb 1860 from a birth record issued in 1999 (194). This conflicts with 10 Feb 1860 in the Spear Bible, however, some bible entries seem to have been recorded by memory (196). His obit claims 11 Feb 1840, a full 20 year difference from both birth record and bible (208). I assume the newspaper made a typo. He was a Piano maker and finisher at the Emerson piano factory between 7 Jul 1883 and 1908 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.(8295) (1082) (8296) Dates are approximate. Worked there 25 years. He moved after 7 Jul 1883 to Boston, Suffolk, MA.(8295) He moved in 1897 to Everett, Middlesex, MA. (8295)(8296) He was a "Foreman in a Cambridge establishment" after 1908 in Cambridge, Suffolk, MA. (8295) He resided 17 Tufts Avenue in Jan 1913 in Everett, Middlesex, MA.(8295) This is where he lived when he died. He may have lived there for some time. He died on 9 Jan 1913 or 10 Jan 1913 in Everett, Middlesex, MA. (8295) According to his obituary, "Ralph V. Spear Drops Dead," Ralph died suddenly of a heart attack at his 17 Tufts Avenue residence on 10 Jan 1913 and died almost instantly. It was 9 Jan 1913 according to Edgar's notes. He was to have been installed for a 20th term of something at what seem to be a Masonic Lodge (obit is torn). He was buried in Walpole, Norfolk, MA. (1136) Parents: Israel SPEAR and Abigail (Abbie) RHOADS.

He married to Nellie M ROBINSON on 7 Jul 1883 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.(1082) (1225)(7427) 7 Jul 1883 is recorded by the marriage certificate (192) and on Boston Marriage register (224). 10 Jul 1883 is recorded by the Spear family bible (196) and Ralph's obit (208). Some citations in the bible appear to be from memory. According to 208, he attended school in Walpole (208). At some point, while a resident of Charlestown, Ralph became a member of the Ward 4 Republican Ward Committee. He was a ranking member of his Masonic lodge (obit is torn). He was a member of two fraternal organization: the Red Men, and the Assawampsett Tribe of Everett, where he was "chief of records."
