He emigrated in Apr 1637 to Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (8893) Colket (476) says he came on the John and Dorothy, or the Rose and appears to have been an indentured servant. He was taxed Paid his proportion of £24 to Major Dennison, commander of forces in Essex & Norfolk counties in 1645 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(8896) As per the 1645 law, this covered the training of youths 10 to 16 years in small guns, half pikes, bows and arrows, as well as the town guard (a pikeman and a musketeer). In this year, Abraham Perkins complained agasnt Story that he had taking trees down "either off the commons or my farm." I do not know the result. He served as a solidier about 1675 in King Philip's War (1675-1676).(8902) He appeared in court in 1692 in Ipswich, Essex, MA. (8903) Among those that signed the petition to clear John and Goodwife Proctor of charges of witchcraft at the Salem witch trials. Unfortunately the charges against them were quite serious. Goodwife Proctor's execution was postponed until after the birth of her baby, at which time the hysteria had ended. He died in Jan 1702 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(8904) (8905) He was a carpenter and cabinet maker.(8906) (8907) He was puritan.(8908)

bullet Laura Sophia SWAIN was born on 22 Feb 1811.(843) 073 cites the birth date of the twins as 22 Feb 1812. This is less reliable. Parents: Private William SWAIN and Philura DUNHAM.

bullet Dr. Thomas Edward SWAIN was born on 22 Feb 1811. (843) 073 cites the birth date of the twins as 22 Feb 1812. This is less reliable. He appeared in court on 6 Jul 1842 in Auburn, Cayuga, NY. (801) On this date, Thomas SWAIN of Manlius petitioned to be declared bankrupt, as reported by the Onondaga Standard. He appeared on the census in 1855 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY. (801) He appeared in court on 31 Mar 1859 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY. (801) Not really a court appearance, but on this date, the Onondaga Standard reported that Thomas had been arrested for being drunk while he was on his way to Michigan. He paid a fine of $5. He appeared in court on 13 Apr 1859 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY. (801) Not really a court appearance, but on this date, Thomas was arrested fro public drunkenness for which he paid a fine of $10. This was at least the second arrest fro drunkenness. He died on 20 Apr 1894 in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY.(8919) He was buried on 22 Apr 1894 in Oran Cemetery, Pompey, Onondaga, NY. He moved before 1806 to "Manlius area".(846) As a young man, he left Newburyport with others and settled in Manlius, Onondaga, NY (105). He appeared on the census in 1810 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY. (801) He died on 11 Oct 1812 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY.(850) (843)(801) (8920) Private William SWAIN enlisted 23 May 1812 in the 6th regiment (artillery). he was in service at Fort Oswego on 29 Jun and 29 Aug 1812. He was discharged 1 Sep 1812. Although one researcher says he died at the age of 31 from a fever contracted during the War of 1812 at Tokett Harbor, Branford, New Haven, CT (73), I think this location is incorrect. It seems more likely that he died in Manlius. He was buried in Oran, Onondaga, NY. (843) William a descendent of William S. SWAIN, who was born 1590 in London, England and came to New England in 1634, became a ruling elder in Whethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. In 1637, his two daughters were captured by Indians at an attack on Whethersfield, but were later released, apparently unharmed. William later founded Branford, New Haven, Connecticut (105).

He married to Philura DUNHAM on 24 Jul 1806. (850)(8921) Children were: Elizabeth Ann SWAIN, Dr. Thomas Edward SWAIN, Laura Sophia SWAIN, William Mosely SWAIN.

bullet William Mosely SWAIN was born on 21 Jul 1812 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY. (850)(801) (8922) From Obit from the Onondaga Historical Society information (099). He was educated Admitted to law school at age 16 in 1828 in Utica, Oneida, NY.(8923) I doubt this location, however. I know of no law schools in Utica. He dropped out due to a lack of interest. He moved in 1829 to Albany, Albany, NY.(8923) He was a teacher (full time) between 1829 and 1830 in Albany, Albany, NY.(8923) He was a hand press operator at Packer & Van Benthuysen after 1829 in Albany, Albany, NY. (8923) He moved before 1832 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. (8923) He was a hand press operator at Phildelphia Inquirer before 1832 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. (8923) He was a foreman and chief engineer at New York Sun after 1832 in New York, New York, NY.(8923) He superintended the press room and was in charge of the first steam engine used in newspaper printing on the North American Continent. He purchased a farm in wester New York State after 1832 in NY.(8923) It is not clear if he ever lived there. He was a founder of Phildelphia Ledger on 26 Mar 1836 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. (801)(8924) (8925)(8926) (8922) The publication was also the first in Philadelphia to put the entire local news service under a single editor. He and his two partners ran the paper alone to start. Swain was editor, pressman, and assisted the others in type setting. it was reported that many experienced printed doubted the young printers would succeed. He was a founder of Baltimore Sun on 17 May 1837 in New York, New York, NY.(8926) (8922) He was a President of The New York and Washington Telegraph Company before 12 Jan 1853 in New York, New York, NY. (8927)(8923) (801)(8922) May have also been called the New York and Washington Telegraph Company. Swain was responsible for getting a telegraph line between New York and Washington. When he took over the company "he made order to reign, where before chaos almost existed. Under his auspices the company has become [in 1853] the most profitable of any in the country, while for regularity, promptness, and dispatch, it is emphatically the model."

Swain was a major pioneer of the telegraph. A copy of a brief communication between swain and the telegraph inventor Samuel Morse is on records with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He died on 16 Feb 1868 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.(801) Founded the Philadelphia Public Ledger and Baltimore Sun and often visited his home town of Pompey and visited his mother in Manlius. Instrumental in getting Daniel Otis Blood, his half-brother, a job at the Public Ledger (105).

Mr. Swain is distinguished as a man of uncommon energy, industry, and remarkable sagacity. His judgment is almost unerring. He never fails in anything he undertakes. He is the possessor of a large fortune, the result of his own exertions" (577). Parents: Private William SWAIN and Philura DUNHAM.

bullet Nancy SWART was born on 7 Nov 1806 in Coxsackie, Greene, NY. (147)(8929) (8930)(3516) The birth of Nancy SWART on 7 Nov 1806 in Coxsackie is recorded in the SWART/FRISBIE family bible in my possession. This date is confirmed by the age at death off headstone. The date is confirmed by 189 and 251. She died on 12 Feb 1886 in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY.(3516) 251 says 1886. She was buried in Rensselaerville Village Cemetery, Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. (3516) Lot #86 Parents: William R SWART and Phebe.

She married to Marcus FRISBEE on 19 Mar 1835 in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. (3602) The Nora Frisbie (189) and Edward Frisbie (251) genealogies incorrectly claim that Marcus and Nancy were married on 20 Mar 1835. I possess the ORIGINAL which shows that they were married a day earlier on 19 Mar 1835 (190). I found that certificate inside the SWART/FRISBIE family bible (8). The certificate appears to be issued by a church, perhaps Presbyterian. They would name their only son Cyrus. Cyrus was not only the name of Marcus' brother but the minister who performed the ceremony, Reverend Cyrus (Meeker?). Marcus FRISBEE seemed to be a very enterprising man. During his life, he was a fireman, cabinet maker, inventor, farmer and furniture store owner. Children were: Cyrus FRISBEE, Emily Maria FRISBEE, Nancy Emeline FRISBEE.

bullet William R SWART was born on 10 Jan 1782 or 31 Dec 1782 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY.(147) (8932)(253) 10 Jan 1782 in Poughkeepsie according to Swart/Frisbie bible which is copyrighted 1832. 31 Dec 1782 according to headstone (age at 27 Aug 1861 was 78 yr, 7 mo, 27 d.). The 1782 birth year and Dutchess county of birth is confirmed by the 1855 NYS census (188). He moved before 1839 to Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. According to the 1855 Census (188), William moved to Rensselaerville in 1843. I suspect that this was recorded incorrectly. I think he was there earlier. There is a William K Swart in Rensselaerville in 1840 (I think the K is simply wrong) plus his son William is in the 1840 census for Rensselaerville plus William Jr was marred there in 1839, My guess is that the whole family was there by 1839. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. (8933) He resided 379 ____. in 1860 in Preston Hollow, Rensselaerville, Albany, NY.(254) IN 1860, 78 year old William and 73 year old Phebe SWART were living in Rensselaerville at 379 ____. His postal address was Preston Hollow. His real estate was valued at $800, which seemed low, and his personal property at $50 (128). He died on 27 Aug 1861 in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY.(8932) He was buried in Rensselaerville Village Cemetery, Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. By 1854, William had bought a cemetery plot in the Rensselaerville Village Cemetery, Great Lot 268, so it is likely that he is buried there. He was a Carpenter in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY.(253) (254)

He married to Phebe on 27 Jan 1804 in Coxsackie, Greene, NY. (8934) In 1830, William's son John SWART moved to Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. John was a carpenter like his father. William (age 61), Phebe (age 55) moved there as well in 1843 and were living with their son John, his wife Abigail and son John, and someone named Elisie HADLEY (188). In 1855, William and Phebe were still living with their son John, Abigail and Elisie HADLEY (188). By 1860, William (age 78) and Phebe (age 73) had moved out and got a place of their own in Preston Hollow (128).
