(9482) He was Represetative to General Court from Marlborough between 1721 and 1723.(9483) He died on 9 Jan 1767 in Southborogh, Worcester, MA. (9484) He was a surveyor.(9485) I am not sure if this was a true profession but Martyn (696) states, "He was a noted surveyor and was often employed by the proprietors of new townships to lay out their house-lots and subsequent divisions of common lands, thereby becoming a proprietor in many of the new towns, and an extensive land holder. He Granted 1000 acres for losses sustained by his father-in-law in Narragensett War in Charlemont, Franklin, MA. bullet Deacon William WARD I was born about 1603 in England. (9498) He emigrated about 1638 to Massachusetts Bay Colony. (9499) Came with his second wife Elizabeth and five children. The author conducted a seemingly thorough analysis of William Ward, but was unable to determine on which ship he emigrated. She does an an excellent description of an generic voyage however. He moved on 6 Sep 1638 to Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(9500) On this date, the General Court allowed new settlers to go to Sudbury plantation. It is not known whether William was among the first settlers or came later. The average house lot size granted was 4 acres. The settlers of Sudbury were pioneers. Few of the men were over 40. He Granted a total of 23.25 acres in the first three land grants. after 6 Sep 1638 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (9501) He William Ward was among 6 men who signed a contract for the construction of the town meetinghouse. on 27 Feb 1643 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(9502) Ward was the only man who signed the contract who was not yet a freeman. Ward (696) speculates that he was a man of character who must have impressed the community to be the only non-freeman to sign the contract. He took the oath of a freeman on 10 May 1643 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (9503) He was Committee to review and revise colonial laws. on 7 Jun 1644 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(9504) He was Appointed Commissioner to end small causes with one other man (reappointed the following year) between 1645 and 1646 in Sudbury, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(9505) . He moved in 1661 to Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(9506) The general Court created the planation of Marlborough on 12 Jun 1660. William Ward and his extended family family of at least 12 persons moved there within the year. He was County Court Grand Juror after 1661 in Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(9507) Served many times at both Charlestown and Cambridge. He resided a house built on the northeast corner of town, near the end of what is now Hayden Street. after 1661 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(9508) Today there is a town recreational filed behind the property called the Artemas Ward Playground, named after William's great-grandson. He was selectman after 1661 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(9509) Served "continuously." He served as a Ward's house was one of seven garrisons used during Indian attacks between 1675 and 1676 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA. (9510) Marlborough was a frontier town among those towns attacked during the Indian War. It began with sporadic guerilla warfare. Some residents were killed with little warning; shot as the opened their doors or struck with tomahawks; their mutilated bodies sometimes hung in trees as a warning. Inhabitants of outlying houses abandoned there houses, barns, livestock, and fled to town. Some went to the town blockhouse, which was better defended. Some residents left Marlborough for the protection of stronger towns, but 73 year old William Ward did not. The held a Council of War on 1 Oct 1675 at which it was decided to maintain 7 or 8 garrison-houses. One of these was William Ward's house, The garrisons were better situated for defense. stocked with arms and ammunition, and surrounded by an eight-foot stockade. After weeks of reports of Indians gathering west of town, the attack came 26 Mar 1676. Most people were in the meetinghouse when the alarm sounded. Men grabbed their muskets and the frightened congregation ran to the garrison houses to which they were assigned. Those assigned to William Ward's house got their just in time but one man was injured from a shot he took before he reached the stockade. The Indians did not to attack the garrisons but burned the meetinghouse, 13 houses, 11 barns, killed many livestock, and destroyed fences and orchards. Ward himself took a heavy loss. The following night a small band of Marlborough men attacked a camp and killed several Indians. This kept the Indians away for a few days. Many residents put their belongings in carts and left town, but William Ward stayed. The number of garrisons was reduced to 5 and then 4. The Indians attacked again on April 18 and destroyed every unfortified building. The townspeople were holed up in the garrisons. Few ventured outside the garrisons. Those that did were often picked off by Indians who remained in town for two more days. The Indians then left Marlborough and attacked Sudbury on April 21. The Indians did not return to Marlborough but John Howe, the husband of Ward's daughter Elizabeth, was killed in Sudbury during this attack. King Phillip was killed four months later and his followers dispersed. He died on 10 Aug 1687 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA.(9511) He was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Marlborough, Middlesex, MA. (9512) He had an estate probated. (9513) It is not clear from Ward (696) whether William had a will. His wife Elizabeth received his cattle and all moveable goods. His real estate was divided among all of his sons except William Jr. who had received his share earlier. Ward was very active in the affairs of the town of Marlborough, but many town records for the period 1665 to 1739 have been lost.

He married to Elizabeth about 1638. (9514) I assumed that they were married one year prior to the birth of their first son. Also, like Ward (696), I will assume that all of the children born in England were born to the first wife and all of the children born in America were born to Elizabeth. It is not known were they were married or where there first children was born, but Ward (696) suspects Sudbury. Children were: Hannah WARD, Samuel WARD, Elizabeth WARD, Increase WARD, Hopestill WARD, William WARD II, Eleazer WARD, Bethiah WARD.

He married to First wife about 1625 in England.(9515) I assumed that they were married one year prior to the birth of their first child. Also, like Ward (696), I will assume that all of the children born in England were born to the first wife and all of the children born in America were born to Elizabeth. Children were: John WARD , Joanna WARD, Obidiah WARD , Richard WARD, Deborah WARD .

bullet Joseph WARE was born about 1791 in Isle of Man.(9526) Joseph WARE died in 1872 (178). He was born on the Isle of Mann, a small independent island nation in the British Isles (see Appendix C). He was about 1791 (1850 Census), 1793 (1860 Census), 1790 (1870 Census), 1788 (assuming reference 6 is right that he was 84), or 1778 (IGI - I assume this is totally wrong as he would have been 94 at death - not likely). He emigrated between 1826 and 1842.(11) (4513)(9526) Joseph and his family emigrated from the Isle of Man during the potato famine, which was effected the Isle of Man although not to the degree that it hurt Ireland. The famine began in the 1820s and peaked during the 1840s. At this time millions were dying in Ireland. Joseph and his family came to America sometime between 1826 (when his has child was born on Man) and 1843. WARE's last child was born on Isle of Man in 1826. He was a Farmer between 1850 and 1870 in Newport, Lake, IL. (205)(9526) (7203) He signed a will on 18 Sep 1871 in Newport, Lake, IL. (206) He died on 7 Apr 1872 in Newport, Lake, IL.(206) (9523) Died of Typhoid Fever according to the funeral home. He had an estate probated on 5 Aug 1880 in Waukegan, Lake, IL. (206) He was christened in Douglas, Isle of Man. He was buried in Eddies Ground, Waukegan, Lake, IL.(9523)

He married to Charlotte QUAYLE on 12 Aug 1813 in Maughold, Isle of Man.(9527) According to the 1870 census, Joseph (and his son Daniel) were US citizens. Children were: WARE, Jane WARE, Daniel WARE, Joseph E WARE, John WARE, William WARE, Christiana WARE, Mary Ann WARE, Charlotte A WARE, Rhoda WARE, Ebenezer WARE.

He married to Mary between 1865 and 1867.(206) 1865 is arbitrary. It assumes she was at least 17 years old.

bullet Joseph E WARE was born on 17 Jul 1817 in Ramsey, Maughold, Isle of Man. (11) He resided in 1880 in Saint Louis, Saint Louis, MO. (206) Parents: Joseph WARE and Charlotte QUAYLE.

bullet Mary Ann WARE was christened on 26 Dec 1822 in Ramsey, Maughold, Isle of Man. (9528) She resided in 1880 in Lima Center, Rock, WI.(206) Parents: Joseph WARE and Charlotte QUAYLE.

She married to ROBERTS.

bullet Rhoda WARE was christened on 9 Nov 1825 in Ramsey, Maughold, Isle of Man. (9529) She emigrated between 1826 and 14 Jul 1842.(9526) (11)(4513) She moved on 14 Jul 1842 to Newport, Lake, IL.(4513) She died about 28 Apr 1861 in Cole Camp, Benton, MO. (4510)(776) Rhoda was only 35 when she died. Date provided by testimony submitted by her daughter Josephine in 1915 as part of her stepmother's pension application. Parents: Joseph WARE and Charlotte QUAYLE.

She married to Private Almerin HERRICK on 8 Nov 1847 in Lake County, IL.(4516) Almerin bought 91 acres of land in Benton and Warren in Lake County, IL. These parcels were separated by a few miles. Only a few miles away, in the town of Newport, lived 18 year old Rhoda WARE. Rhoda must have been interesting with her Manx accent. Maybe she spoke Gaelic as her first language. Her father, Joseph WARE, had brought his family from the Isle of Man and had purchased three 40-acre parcels in Newport only one year before Almerin. It would seem likely that this is how Almerin met his future wife (65).

Rhoda WARE, who would become Almerin wife, was born on the Isle of Man. In 1826, her youngest brother Ebenezer was born according to US census data (60, 61). The US census incorrectly records all of the WAREs as being born in England rather than Isle of Man which is a separate country (60, 61). Rhoda emigrated with her family sometime after that but before 1842, when her father, Joseph WARE, purchased a farm in Newport, Lake, IL (65). I suspect they came to America between 1840 and 1843 because I cannot find anything in US census records until 1850. Rhoda was living with her father in Newport in 1850 (60) and 1860 (61).

Where as Almerin between September 1865 and October 1866? What was he doing near St. Joseph, MO, 250 miles from home where Susan was caring four their 4 month old daughter?
· He may have been in a hospital near St. Joseph, MO from he time of his discharge until his death 8 months later. Thousands of men discharged form their units were not capable of going home right away. The hospitalized men had to continue to fight.
· He may have gone to St. Joseph for a number of reasons. Troops were often mustered out, and then had to wait around to received pay before being discharged. It may well be that he was near St,. Joseph. Almerin and the entire 151st were discharged 6 Feb 1866. He may have been looking for work.
· He may have joined the regular Army and gone west to fight Indians.
· Record keeping during the Civil War was not very good at keeping up with these types of cases. His unit may have lost track of him since he was in the hospital.
· The unit may have carried him as "sick in the hospital," when he may have been given a furlough to go home.

On 29 Oct 1890, about 25 years later, while living at 810 Maine street in Plainsville, IL, Susan notarized her Declaration for Widow's Pension. For some reason, nothing happened (139). In 1915, yet another 25 years later, Susan submitted an affidavit, as did her friends and relatives, testifying that she had never remarried, to receive her pension (139). She wrote:
"I have lived to be almost 80 years old and few people are now living who lived during my married life, so I can get little help as evidence of that time. I am now old and feeble, and my daughter Olive, not strong, is my only dependence for care, in my old age, and she is very anxious to help me get a pension."

In a 1915 affidavit, the Adams County Clerk reported that in 1891, lot 12 in Plainsville was assessed at $400 "being the one-filth value of said lot which were the laws of the State of Illinois at the time" (139).

In another 1915 affidavit, a friend of Susan said that Susan "had always been a resident of Adams County, Illinois and residing in the same neighborhood, save for the period of her married life, when she resided with her husband in an adjoining county" (139). Children were: Josephine Alvira HERRICK, Alvin H HERRICK.

bullet William WARE was christened on 30 Apr 1820 in Ramsey, Maughold, Isle of Man. (9530) He died between 1872 and 1880. (206) Parents: Joseph WARE and Charlotte QUAYLE.

bullet John WASHBURN III was christened on 26 Nov 1620 in Bengeworth, Worcester, England. (9531)(9532) This would also roughly correspond to his age (14) at emigration in 1635. He emigrated in 1635 to Massachusetts Bay Colony. (9533) Came to New England (age 14) on the Elizabeth & Ann with his mother Margery (age 49) and brother Phillip (age 11). The Elizabeth & Ann left London mid-May, 1635, bound for New England. The ship arrived safe at Massachusetts Bay. His father had come three years prior in 1632. He served as a Served in "late expedition against the Narrohiggansetts and their confederates" on 28 Oct 1645 in English-Narragansett Conflict (1643-1645). (9534) There is less likely that it was not this John WASHBURN that served but his father John Sr. He died.(9535) It would appear that John Washburn had no will but deed in 1666 Phillip, his second living son, all that he had. Could John Jr have died before 1666? Parents: John WASHBURN II and Margery MOORE.

He married to Elizabeth MITCHELL on 6 Dec 1645 in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony.(9536) (9537) Children were: Mary WASHBURN.

She married to Samuel KINSLEY II about 1687. (9562) The Kingsley Family in America (526) says they were married in 1694, which is four year after the birth of the first child. Either the child was born out of wedlock, he got the marriage date wrong, or there is an unknown first wife. My guess is that the marriage date is wrong. Children were: Samuel KINSLEY III, Hannah KINSLEY, Sarah KINSLEY, Mary KINSLEY, Susanna KINSLEY, Abigail KINSLEY, Bethia KINSLEY, Benjamin KINSLEY.
