In 1677, he purchased land on Biskie Island in Gloucester and some other plots of land on the island. He sold some of his land to his son Nathan in 1708 and gifted some land to son Humphrey in 1719 (231, 374). Deacon
Humphrey WOODBURY(5298) was born
in 1609 in England.(10181)
(10182)(10183) He emigrated
in Jun 1628 to Cape Ann Side (later Beverly), Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10184)
(10185) According to the Essex Biographical Sketches (234), Humphrey
came to America in 1628 with his father John (who had first come in 1626) and
Uncle William, but Savage (475) speculates that Humphrey came over in 1626 with
his father sand stayed while his father went back to England for a couple of
years. He Granted with six others one "half acre at Winter harbor for
fishing trade and to build upon." on 2 Jan 1635/36.
(10186)(10187) I am unable
to locate Winter harbor but there is a Winter Island in Salem Harbor today.
He Received two separate 40-acre grants of land and soon bought 10 more acres.
in 1636/37 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10186)(10188) He resided
near Mackerel Cove and the lighthouse in the Snake Hill region of town. after
1643 in Beverly, Essex, MA.(10186)
He became a member Church at Beverley in Jul 1643 in Beverly, Essex, MA.
(10189) He was one of the founding members
and its first Deacon. He Bought 20 acres, dwelling house, and barn from Guido
Bayley in 1652 in Beverly, Essex, MA.(10186)
(10190) He Purchased 10 acres
from Susannah Hollingsworth on 2 Dec 1667 in Salem, Essex, MA.
(10191) He took the oath of a freeman after 1678 in Beverly, Essex,
MA.(10192) He died in Feb 1681 in
Beverly, Essex, MA.(10193)
(10194) The date given by Savage for his will, 4 Mar 1686 (and probated
11 Oct 1686), which is after his death, makes no sense. He left no will but appears
to have died a large land owner. He was a Fisherman in Salem, Essex, MA.

John
"Father Woodbury" WOODBURY(5298)
was born about 1581 in Somersetshire, England.
(10205)(1251)
(10206)(10207)
(10208) John WOODBURY came from Somersetshire, England and may have
been born there. Savage specifies "perhaps some fishing village on the Bristol
Channel." Anderson states that although no records have been found of John
WOODBURY in the South Petherton records, unlike his brother William, he asserts
he must must be from someplace in Somersetshire. He emigrated in 1624 to Cape
Ann Side (later Beverly), Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10209)(1251)
(10186)(10210)
(10211) In 1624, John left his home, wife, and children in Somersetshire,
England sailed to Cape Ann and removed two years later to form with others the
settlement of Salem. It would be 2 or 3 years before he would go back and see
them again. In his 16 Feb 1680 deposition, his son Humphrey WOODBURY recalled
that "when I lived in Somersetshire in England ... my father, John WOODBURY,
since deceased, did about 56 years ago [1624] remove to New E[ngland] and there
I travelled with him as far as Dorchester, and I understood that my said father
came to N.E. by order of a company called Dorchester company, among whom Mr.
White (Rev.) of Dorchester, in England, was an active instrument." He
was a Farmer and rancher after 1624 in Cape Ann (later Gloucester, Essex, MA).
(10212) He moved in 1626 to Salem, Massachusetts
Bay Colony.(10213)
(10214) He Return trip in 1627 in England.
(10215)(1251)
(10216)(10217) In 1625,
John was sent back to England to secure a patent of title for Salem which had
become quite prosperous. He spoke of Salem favorably and returned the following
year, 1628, with his brother William and eldest son Humphrey. He had successfully
secured the patent which bore the date 19 Mar 1628. In his 1680 deposition, Humphrey
WOODBURY remembered "After about 3 years absence my said father returned
to England & made us acquainted with what settlement they had made in N.E.
& that he was sent back by some that intended to settle a plantation about
3 leagues west of Cape Ann. To further this design after about ½ a year's
stay in England my father returned to N.E. and brought me with him. We arrived
at the place now called Salem in or about the month of June, 1628." RICHARD
BRACKENBURY, who came to New England with JOHN ENDICOTT, deposed on 20 January
1680 that "we came ashore, at a place now called Salem, the 6th of September
1628" and found there several settlers, including John WOODBURY."
He was town assessor between 1627 and 1638 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10218) He was town constable on 28 Sep
1630 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(10219)
(10220)
(10221) He took the oath of a freeman on 18 May 1631 in Salem, Massachusetts
Bay Colony.(10222) Stearns (673) says
he was made freeman in 1635. He was lotlayer, surveyor between 1635 and 1638
in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(10223)
(10224)
(10225) Served continuously? As surveyor, he was appointed one of
the "overseers & Layers out of the Lotts of ground for this prescinct
of Salem ... He was one of the men entrusted with the duty of laying out two
hundred acres for Mr. Endicott, 27 January 1636." He was Deputy for Salem
at Massachuseets Bay General Court between 1635 and 1638/39.
(10226)(10227) Served 5
times during this period. He was Selectman (elected) between 1635 and 1641
in Beverly, Essex, MA.(10228)
(10229)
(10230) (not continuously). According to Andersons' Great Migration
Begoins, "John WOODBURY was a conscientious man, who in his few short years
as a part of Salem government, did more than others accomplished in much longer
lives. He was present for every selectmen's meeting until death interrupted him
in mid-stride in the winter of 1641." He granted 200 acres at the herad
of the Bass River (one of five men who shared 1000 acres) on 25 Jan 1635/36.
(10231)
(10232) He moved on 25 Nov 1635 to Beverly, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10233) John was among four men awarded
200 farm acres in Beverly on the condition that they sell their homes in town.
He became a member church of Salem before 1636 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay
Colony.(10234) He was Essex petit
jury between 1636 and 1641.(10235)
Served 12 times during this period He was selectman between 1636 and 1641
in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(10236)
Served continuously? He was Colony assessor on 12 Mar 1637/38 in Salem,
Massachusetts Bay Colony.(10237) He
granted 1 acre of marsh based upon his household of 6 on 25 Dec 1637 in Salem,
Massachusetts Bay Colony.(10238) He
granted 5 acres of meadow on 7 May 1638 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10239) He appeared in court on 24 Sep
1639 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(10240)
According to Anderson's Great Migration returns, "With Peter Palfrey
and John Balch, John WOODBURY sued Elizabeth Babson at Salem court over an undisclosed
matter. With Peter Palfrey, he was ordered to measure out a half acre of land
at Thomas Oliver's new house, 29 September 1640." He was Colony committee
to value livestock on 13 May 1640 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10241) He He was chosen to arbitrate a dispute. on 29 Jun 1641.
(10242) Lieutenant Davenport, Mr. Henry
Bartholomew and John WOODBURY were the three prudent men chosen to arbitrate
the suit between Richard Ingersoll and Joshua Verin. He died in Dec 1641 in
Gloucester, Essex, MA.(10243)
(10244) He was not much over age 60 when
he died "after a life of energy and faithfulness to the colony." His
youngest child was only 2 years old (231, 374). He left, according to his inventory,
on 20 Feb 1643/44 in Salem, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(10245) He was educated Probably above average considering that her
signed his own name and held many public offices.
(10246) Parents: WOODBURY and
Unknown. He married to First wife before 1608. (10247) In his Great Migration Begins, Anderson examines and rejects the claim by some geologiesits that the mother of John's son Humpjrey WOOBBURY was Joanna Humphrey. "A John WOODBURY married Joanna Humphrey on 21 June 1596 at Burlescombe, Devonshire, and this has been thought to be a marriage of the immigrant, and also an explanation for the given name of his first son. But this wife was buried on 5 June 1601, and so, unless Humphrey WOODBURY grossly underestimated his own age in his depositon of 1680, Joanna (Humphrey) WOODBURY cannot be his mother. In any case, this marriage seems much too early for the immigrant. Raymon Meyers Tingley gave a name and exact date for the second marriage of John WOODBURY, but as with all items attributable only to this author, we should meet these data with extreme skepticism. The mother of Humphrey WOODBURY was certainly not the mother of the rest of John WOODBURY's children. But did the immigrant have two wives or three? The last three children of John WOODBURY were born in a span of four years, from 1636 to 1640, but his son John, to be married by 1654, must have been born some years before 1636. Two scenarios come to mind. First, John WOODBURY may have had two wives in addition to the mother of Humphrey, a second wife (whom he may have married while in England in 1627 and 1628) who was the mother of John and a third wife (Agnes or Anne) who was the mother of the last three children. Second, given the approximate date of birth for the son John, it may be that the immigrant John WOODBURY, on his return trip to England in late 1627 and early 1628, married a second time, to Agnes, impregnated this second wife, and returned to New England without her. She would then have come to Salem some years later and begun having children again in 1636." Children were: Deacon Humphrey WOODBURY.
He married to Agnes about 1608 in
England. I assumed that they were married about one year befor ethe birth of
their first child. Her full name may have been "Agnes NAPPER," according
to the IGI. On 18 May 1631, John was made freeman (231).
Roger Conant became a well-represented and liked Governor of Cape and. He was
instrumental in establishing the first permanent settlement and plantation in
the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He engaged John WOODBURY, John Balch and Peter
Palfrey to help him establish a plantation in Naumkeag. John and the other men
were known to be "honest and prudent men" (231).
Genealogist Perley Derby notes the gap in ages between John's youngest child
(Humphrey born 1609/1610) and the baptism of his third child (Hannah baptized
1636) and speculates that there may well be more children (374).
Some less reliable sources mention other wives (Elizabeth TENNEY and Joannah
HUMPHREY) but not Derby (374) that seems the more reliable.
In 1635, William Woodbury, Roger Conant and John Batch, received grants of land
totaling 1000 acres between the Bass River and Wenham Lake where they soon settled.
These three are referred to as "the old planters" and "the fathers
of Beverly" and John as "Father Woodbury" (231, 234).
He held several different offices in Salem and twice represented it in the General
Court (231). Children were: John WOODBURY,
Hannah WOODBURY, Abigail WOODBURY,
Peter WOODBURY, Peter WOODBURY,
Amoas WOODBURY, Agnes WOODBURY,
Ann WOODBURY.

Lydia
WOODBURY was baptised on 27 Jun 1725 in Beverly, Essex, MA.
(10248) Reference 177 has that she was also born 27 Jun 1725 in Gloucester.
I find this source far less reliable, especially since it has no known author.
Now, regarding the Beverly Vital records, this baptism record has Lydia's mother
as Lydia, but it surely must be Abigail. There are no Lydia's marrying Isaac
Woodbury's. The date of death and age at death matches exactly and the space
in between children of Isaac and Abigail is vacant from 1723-1727. See: Herrick
Genealogy Pg. #29. She died on 14 Sep 1779 in Gloucester, Essex, MA.
(10249) From a fellow from the WOODBURY GenForum in response to my
question regarding who are Lydia parents: "Your question is one I've had
for a while. Lydia's gravestone in the old West Gloucester cemetery stated that
she died 14 Sept 1779, aged 54 yrs & 3 mos. This would put her birth around
June 1725. In searching the Essex Co VR CD, the only Lydia born in that timeframe
is the one referenced in earlier response (d. Isaac & Lydia, bp 27 June,
1725 in Beverly). I find no marriage recorded for them, but find an Isaac Woodbury
& Abigail Herrick, m. 11 Oct 1722 in Beverly. Now add this to the mix: near
to Lydia's grave was a Luci Woodberry, dau. Benjamin & Lydia Woodberry, d.
29 July 1731 (age 3 y 8 m). This would put her born ca. 1727, same timeframe
as Lydia. Could they have been sisters? The mother's name Lydia would certainly
fit. Benjamin W & Lydia Herrick were m. 10 Nov 1720 in Beverly. (another
Herrick connection). Anyway, this remains to be sorted out...Bruce" Parents:

WOODBURY Anderson (586) notes that William WOODBURY resided in South Petherton,

settling in Salem. In 1630, William went over the the "Cape Ann Side"
of the Bass River and settled in what is called today "William Woodbury's
Point." He built the first dwelling in Beverly: "a large, double, oak-framed
structure, called a garrison house, about the year 1630" In 1639, he received
a land grant in Salem (234). Parents: WOODBURY

Rifka
WOODOVCHINSKY died in 1908.(251)
She married to Raphael RIEMER about 1889 in Vilna, Russia. I assumed that they were married one year before the birth of their eldest child. According to his granddaughter, Phyllis Damesek Ravenett, Raphael and Rivka later immigrated to America (port unknown) about the same time as Max and Rebecca DAMESEK (1903). No one met them at Ellis Island. Raphael came first with his eldest son and when they were settled in Freehold, with many neighbors from the old 'Shtetl (village), Rivka followed with the rest of the 7 children and died about 6 months after arriving." Raphael and Rivka settled in Freehold, NJ, a previously all gentle community which dated back to the Revolutionary War where people farmed the red clay ground. Raphael, Rivka and family settled in a poor Jewish "ghettoized area" of Freehold known as "Texas." Several other families from Vilna arrived in Freehold at about the same time. Mollie and her family experienced much antisemitism in Freehold from the families who "did not appreciate having Jews among them but always handled any incidents with dignity." In the summers, Rebecca, my grandfather Abbe and his brothers often visited Rebecca's uncle. Rabbi RIEMER died of cancer in 1990. The entire RIEMER family, coming from all over the US, gathered in Freehold and held a "wonderful memorial in his honor." Children were: Elilu Jacob (Elick Jacov) RIEMER, Rachel (Rose) RIEMER, Baruch (William) RIEMER, Dov Ber (Benjamin) RIEMER , Malka (Mollie/Min) RIEMER, Esther RIEMER, Abraham RIEMER, Ari Labe (Leon) RIEMER.
