He then studied engineering (where? Did he graduate?) He was a Kenosha County Surveyor (several terms) between 1899 and 1904 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (776)(777) In 1899, Alvin ran for County Surveyor as a Republican. He was elected and took office in 1900. He was reelected in 1901, but "took a trip through the West instead." In November of 1904, he was again elected County Surveyor and served in that capacity for a number of years (6). He resided 511 South Street before 1904 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI.(776) The date is estimated. He moved about 1920 to Aberdeen, Grays Harbor County, WA. (777) Alvin moved to Aberdeen where he had been offered a position as Highway Commissioner (123). He was a Highway Commissioner about 1920 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor County, WA. (777) He died on 15 Dec 1926 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor County, WA. (777) Alvin BLOOD was killed in an auto accident in Aberdeen. His wife Carrie survived with "bruises and minor injuries." Parents: Private Charles Hastings BLOOD and Josephine Alvira HERRICK.

He married to Carrie Belle YOURMANS on 8 Oct 1909 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Cananda. (778) Alvin was "one of the popular young men of the city." By 1898, Alvin had left his family in Wisconsin for the war in the Philippines. On 6 Nov 1898, Alvin mailed his father Charles a post card from Camp Otis, Honolulu, Hawaii, which says, "My Dear Father, Transports Ohio and Indiana arrived yesterday. We will go aboard tomorrow mourning and all three sail on Wednesday ____. Respectfully, your aff. son, [signed A.H. Blood], 18th Infantry." Alvin was a field musician (bugler). In 1899, after the war ended, Alvin returned to his parents' home (6, 44).

bullet Private Charles Hastings BLOOD was born on 11 Apr 1841 in Salina, Onondaga, NY. (787)(788) Salina is now part of the City of Syracuse. Hisory of racine says he was born in 1841. He moved in 1856 to Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (776) He resided in 1861 in Salem, Kenosha, WI. (789) He served as a 1st WI Infantry, Company G. in 1861 in Civil War (Union).(790) (791)(792) (793) Charles was a veteran of the Civil War. "He served first with the Wisconsin Volunteers (Union) and saw much service." In April 1861, he enlisted in the 1st Wisconsin Infantry, Company G. According to his obituary, Charles participated in some skirmishes and "saw many months of actual service during the war," however, the term of service for the 1st WI Infantry was less than three months. Nonetheless, since Charles mustered out with the rest of the unit, it seems likely that he would have therefore fought at the Battle of Falling Waters. According to the Wisconsin veterans Museum, "The First Wisconsin Infantry (Three months) was organized at Camp Scott, Milwaukee, April 27, 1861, in response to the call of President Lincoln under date of April 14, 1861, for seventy-five thousand men. The First left the state on the 9th day of June, proceeding under orders to Harrisburg, PA, soon thereafter was transferred to Hagerstown, MD, and assigned to the division of the Union Army commanded by Major General Patterson. In the advance of Martinsburg, VA (present-day West Virginia), it participated in the Battle of Falling Waters July 2, 1861, losing one man killed and five wounded and one prisoner. The term of service for which the men enlisted having expired, the First returned to Camp Scott, Milwaukee, and was mustered out of the military service of United States on August 21, 1861. A week after the muster out of the First Wisconsin Infantry (three months) orders were received to reorganize the regiment for a term of enlistment for three years ... " An interesting footnote to the Battle of Falling Waters is, "CSA Gen. Stonewall Jackson was nearly killed while sitting under an oak tree at Falling Waters on July 2, 1861. A Union cannonball struck a tree limb, the falling limb narrowly missed Jackson and he escaped unharmed." I'd like to think that that was Chuck Blood's cannonball. Charles later joined The Grand Army of the Republic (the largest organization of the Union's Civil War veterans and the forerunner of the modern American Veterans' Association). "During his long life in Kenosha, he was very active in caring for the veterans of the war and he was deeply beloved among the men who wear the Grand Army badge" (122, 172). He resided 604 Praise Avenue after 1898 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (794) He resided there with several sons. He resided 511 South Street in Kenosha after 1902 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (795) He was a Construction Foreman at N.R. Allen's Sons tannery in 1908 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (776)(796) (790)(795) He was likely at this job for a number of years on either side of 1908. He resided 620 Pomeroy in 1916 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI.(795) He was a Time Keeper at N.R. Allen's Sons tannery in 1916 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI.(795) He moved between 1916 and 1920 to Schenectady, Schenectady, NY.(797) He was a Carpenter and joiner before 1920 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI. (776)(790) (796) He was a Kenosha City Assessor for two terms before 1920 in Kenosha, Kenosha, WI.(776) He resided 42 Baker Street in 1920 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY. (797) Between 1916 and 1920, Charles and Josephine moved to Schenectady, NY and lived with Grampa Frank and Laura, their children. Grampa Frank own the property, but Frederick Rogers his wife and four children were renting there as well. Frank was working as an electrical engineer at the General Electric where Laura also worked as a steel worker. The census lists Josephine's mother as being born in England but they probably meant Isle of Man. The census also states that Charles's mother was born in VT which I doubt (129). He died on 5 Mar 1921 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY.(790) He had been "in failing health." He was buried in Greenridge Cemetery, Kenosha, Kenosha, WI.(790) His remains were brought to Kenosha on the following Monday and funeral services, led by the Masons, were held on Tuesday. He is buried in Green Ridge Cemetery (122). Charles Blood was honored by the Grand Army of the Republic, which issued a resolution of respect (172). Parents: Walter Hastings BLOOD and Sabrina HAMILTON.

He married to Josephine Alvira HERRICK on 27 Nov 1871 in Lake County, IL. (798)(799) Charles learned the trade of "carpenter and joiner." He followed his trade of carpenter for many years. My father has a piece of furniture he calls a secretary that was made by Charles. For some years past, he had been a foreman in the construction department of the N.R. Allen's Sons tannery where he was in charge of all the carpenter work (6, 41, 122).

Charles was a member of the Kenosha Lodge of Masons, where he became as Master Mason and served as lodge master for several terms (122). I own a commemorative coin that he received from the masons which has his name on it and the year 1865, when he was 24. He was also a member of "famous Park City Greys (123), the Kenosha Rifles (49), the fire company (49), and both he and Josephine were members of the Christian Science Church (6).

Charles, Horace and Walter are working as carpenter. Alvin is County Surveyor with an office at 172 Main Street and Franks is a student (124).

In 1908, only Alvin, Walter and Laura are living with their father Charles. Same occupations. Laura is a student (124). In 1921, Kenosha changed its entire street numbering system. Today, this address is known as 1319 59th Street. As a carpenter, with three professional carpenter sons, it seems likely that Charles built this house himself (_____).

By 1916, only Walter and Laura are living at home. Walter is a carpenter and Laura is a teacher (124). Children were: Walter Herrick BLOOD, William Almerin BLOOD, Horace DUNHAM BLOOD, Alvin Hamilton BLOOD, Frank Herbert BLOOD, Laura Lillian BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD.

bullet Daniel Otis BLOOD was born in 1819 in Manlius, Onondaga, NY. (800) He moved before 1841 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. (801) Daniel Otis moved to Philadelphia to work for his half brother, William SWAIN, who published the Philadelphia Ledger. He was a Chief Book Keeper at Philadelphia Ledger between 1841 and 1845 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.(802) (803) The Philadelphia Inquirer article says he was at the Philadelphia Ledger prior to 1845. I believe that that is an error. I believe he was there by 1841 (092). In this position of chief book keeper, "Mr. B" was "widely and favorably known" and upon his death, years after he leaving the Public Ledger, a special obituary and tribute was published in that paper (100). He was a Co-owner/Co-founder of Blood's Dispatch, later D.O. Blood & Company between 1845 and 1853 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. (803) He died in 1853 in Florence, Burlinton, NJ. (804) He died of a fever (098).
After his death, according to 100, there were a couple of length obituaries in local newspapers. They read:
"'Tears ran down aged furrows then.
'And wept young eyes and wept strong men!'
We are reminded of the above quotation on feeling and seeing the effect it produced by the announcement of the death of DANIEL OTIS BLOOD, who departed this life, at life residence near Florence, N. Jersey, on the evening of 21st inst. The writer of this knew him well. Associated with the deceased for many years in the same establishment, we bear testimony to the mortal worth, to the sterling integrity, that marked all his actions. Combining with sound judgment a firm and decided manner that allowed no difficulties, however numerous, to thwart his purpose when once fixed, he established a reputation of wisdom and sound policy that induced men of maturer years to seek his opinion and advice on subjects of weight and importance to themselves.
His philosophy was sometimes thought visionary, yet the introduction into this community of the Despatch Post that bears his name, the planning and carrying into successful execution the Public Laundry, the system he originated in the business department of the establishment in which he was Chief Clerk, all show the master mind. Although aided in a great degree by his partner in the two first named schemes, yet to his firmness is attributed the final triumph over the many threatening difficulties that surrounded them. His death at this time is more to be deplored, for when about to realize the profits of his industry, the destroyer laid his cold hand upon him, and we are compelled once more to acknowledge the uncertainty of its coming.
His career on this earth has not been marked by any renowned deed, nor has he occupied such a position in the community that would lead us to expect his name recorded in history; yet in the circle in which he moved, and with all with whom he was brought into contact, an impression was created that will never be effaced while his life with us lingers.
Although rough in his exterior, his constant urbanity and natural kindness of heart attracted many around him, who, now that he is gone, feel sensibly that Death has robbed them of a sincere friend, one whose words flowed with wisdom, and of whose example we could follow without fear of the world's reproof.
We bow the head with grief, but submit calmly, as calmly as we can to the decree, believing in the words of hold write, "That God's power is great and His will must be done." But one more duty remains to be performed. His now inanimate body must be consigned to the grave. In a few hours, all that is left of our beloved friend, will be covered by its mother, Earth, and we then return to our worldly employments, feeling that a void exists in our midst, we fear never can be filled." He was buried on 25 Sep 1853 in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.(805) Ben Franklin is also buried there (98). He was a Laundy House. In the year ____, he went on to develop the Public Laundry with Walter Blood, the first of two businesses he started with his brother. I know nothing this endeavor. Walter Blood's occupation was listed as Laundry House in the 1853 and 1854 Philadelphia city directories. Daniel Otis took his son Thomas to see President Abraham Lincoln (98).

He was a member of several societies including the Fredonia Lodge, Palestine Encampment, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (100).

See Appendix H for more information on Blood's Despatch.

He moved in 1904 to Schenectady, Schenectady, NY. He resided 42 Baker Avenue in 1920 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY. (830) At the time, he owned a flat with a mortgage. Frederick Rogers rented the other flat in the house and living their with his wife Letta, and 3 children. He was an Electrical engineer at General Electric between 1920 and 1929 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY. (831)(830) He was a double E at the GE from at least 1920 to at least 1929. My dad says that when he was 5 years only, in 1929, Grampa came home and said he had lost his job at the General Electric plant downtown. Dad said that that event, followed by his mother screaming, was one of his earliest memories. He resided 1218 Regent Street in 1933 in Niskayuna, Schenectady, NY.(832) My dad said Frank built the "bungalow for only $2000 in 19_. It was only one story but had a dumb waiter that went into the basement. I lived there after 1968. it was very small. When dad lived in this house years later, he added an extension onto the back as well as a second story. He served as a Working for Newark Signal Corps in 1944 in Newark, Essex, NJ. The following stories went out over the wire:
ABC: "SELECTIVE SERVICE MIX-UP TARGETS DEAD MAN. NISKAYUNA, NY, Dec 9 - The Selective service threatened fines of up to $250,000 and prison time against him. But Frank Blood has not budged on registering for the draft. He can't. The Schenectady County man died 16 years ago at the age of 102. The woman who lives in Blood's former home in Niskayuna got a letter over the weekend warning of legal action if he did not sign up within ten days. The letter emphasized, 'It is not too late!' Blood turned 18 some 40 years before the Selective Service was even established. The Selective Service was informed of the error, and is pretty sure Blood is not appropriate for the military. The federal agency says it relies on department of motor vehicle records to determine who has not signed up for the draft." Parents: Private Charles Hastings BLOOD and Josephine Alvira HERRICK.

bullet Private Isaac BLOOD was born on 2 Jun 1760 in Pepperell, Middlesex, MA. (852)(853) (854) He served as a Private in MA State Troops. Pvt in Continental Army, Colonel WAFE CT regiment. about 1775 in American Revolution (1775-1783). (855) He must have been young because he was 16 when war was declared in 1776 and 21 when it ended in 1781. Congress passed the Pension Act in 1818, but it was not until 4 Mar 1831, when Isaac Blood was 73 years old and living in Bath, Steuben, NY, that he submitted his pension application. The pension records include a page seemingly from a family bible which includes birth records for their children that were born between 1784 and 1800 in Pepperell. When Isaac's Certificate of Pension was issued on 17 May 1833, he was living in Naples, Ontario, NY. According to the document, Private Isaac Blood served in the company of Captain Byington in the New York Regiment under Colonel Wade. Isaac was awarded a pension of $40 per annum. In 1838, Congress allowed widowed spouses of Revolutionary War veterans to collect benefits. On 19 Jan 1844, at the age of 83, as heir to her late husband's pension, the widow Lydia Blood, who was living in Cohocton, appeared before a Steuben County judge to claim her benefit. She testified that she was the widow of Private Isaac Blood. Asa SHATTUCK, her brother, submitted written testimony on 22 Nov 1843 that he resided in Pepperell and that Isaac BLOOD was a soldier in the Revolution who married his sister Lydia SHATTUCK. Apparently, testimony from his wife and brother-in-law, as well as Isaac's pension application, was sufficient and Lydia was awarded his pension. He moved between 1800 and 1835 to Naples, Ontario, NY. (856) 1800 is the date that their last child Allen was born. He moved about 1835 to Cohocton, Steuben, NY.(857) He died on 18 Jul 1842 in Cohocton, Steuben, NY. (858)(859) He was a Farmer. (860) Parents: Deacon David BLOOD and Abigal FARNSWORTH.

bullet Yeoman, Sergeant James BLOOD was born between 1642 and 1648 in Groton, Middlesex, MA.(870) It is not clear whether James was born in England or Massachusetts. He had an estate probated in 1694 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. (872) Two years after James was killed, his estate of £148 was divided between Abigail, her daughters, and Jonathan KEMP, uncle and guardian of Abigail's three children. I suspect that when she was about 29, Abigail's children were taken away from her because she was unmarried and starting to show. Parents: Richard BLOOD and Isabel WILKINSON.

(909) She was educated University of Wisconsin at Madison about 1912 in Madison, Dane, WI.(910) She was a school teacher between 1912 and 1920 in WI.(910) These dates are approximate. She moved before 1920 to Schenectady, Schenectady, NY.(830) Her brother Frank had already moved to Schenectady in 1904 and was working as an electrical engineer at GE. She was a Secretary at General Electric Company in 1936 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY.(909) (911)(910) She was employed by the GE until she retired. She resided 1627 Rugby Road between 1936 and 1975 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY.(909) The dates are estimated. She died on 29 Mar 1975 in Schenectady, Schenectady, NY.(911) (910) According to the DC, Laura died of respiratory acidosis due to severe chronic lung disease associated with heart failure. She was cremated March 31 (39). I don't remember my Aunt Laura well. She died when I was 15 but the real reason was that we had little in common. I visited infrequently. She was about 5' tall and occasionally drove this big old American car from the early 50s with huge wings and enormous heavy doors. When I was about 8 years old, she drove me someplace and when we got back to her place, she slammed my finger in one of those big doors.

Laura was Grandpa Frank's only sister. She was nothing like him. He was a Unitarian humanist intellectual who believed in deductive reasoning and science. She was a Christian Scientist who believed in flying saucers.

She never married. I doubt she was ever even close to it. For over 40 years, she lived on the top flat at 1627 Rugby Road in Schenectady, NY. My mother's parents lived in the flat below. Grandpa Frank was the landlord and rented 1627 to both his sister and son's mother-in-law. It is a nice part of Schenectady only a mile or two from my parent's house in Niskayuna. I would ride my bike down to the house and visit Sally and Abbe and maybe visit Laura too.

She had a lot of books on flying saucers and alien abductions written by a guy name Anderson - David Anderson I think. His books were very informative because they showed detailed illustrations of the interior of the Venusian and Saturnian scout ships and mother ships which he knew having seen them first hand.

I remember on Thanksgiving, about 1972, the whole family (Laura, my parents, their parents, and me) was eating at Laura's long dinner table. I was sitting across from Laura and she asked me something that required me to choose between two things, so I said, "Eeny meeny miny mo catch a rabbit by his toe..." And Laura cut me off and said, "Don't say nigger." She was over 80 and couldn't hear what I had really said. So Dad said, "He didn't say nigger Laura." Laura accepted that but I was completely dumfounded. I knew that Laura had heard me wrong and knew what a nigger was and did not like the word, but I was confused and could not understand how she got "nigger" from "rabbit." During the car ride home, dad told me that some people say "catch a nigger by his toe." I was appalled. Then I got angry. I wondered what kind of person was she to have 'heard' me say "nigger" so easily. The whole incident left me with bad impression of her because I began to suspect that SHE was the bigot - and I didn't know that word.

She was a Christian Scientist and read the bible often. I remember once that she asked me if I knew much about the bible. I told her proudly that I had listened to Jesus Christ Superstar several times. She cringed. I guess that was the wrong answer.

In her last few months of life, she got very sick. Laura needed to see a doctor, but she refused to see one because of her faith. As Grandma Sally, who lived downstairs and was close to 70 herself, took care of her daily for months. Sally must have been feeding her twice a day and cleaning up after her. Few of us truly appreciated her sacrifice. I'm sure Grampa Frank never thanked her because he was so quiet and unpracticed at social graces. Her health continued to fail until she got so sick that it became apparent to her that not only might she die, but Jesus might let it happen. She was admitted to a hospital, but was not there long. By then, one lung was completely collapsed and the other was only half-functional. She was in a lot pain and had difficulty breathing. She died before I even had a chance to visit. After she died, dad said that she had lost her faith near the end. What he meant was that it was too bad that she had not lost her faith much sooner. I never really understood or connect with Aunt Laura. She was so different from her brother Grandpa Frank.

I was 15 years old when she died. It was the first funeral I ever attended. I thought it was the dumbest thing I ever saw. Some minister speaking to a room half full of Unitarians about Godly crap. Although he did a good job at finding out what kind of a person she was, the fact that he had not known her bothered me a lot. Who put him in charge of defining who she was? I swore I would never go to another funeral. I did not attend either Ethel or Abbe's funeral when they died a couple of years later, only a month apart. I did go to the simple service at the cemetery for Abbe. I believe the next funeral service that I attended was in 1999 in Maryland, 24 years later. I still really dislike the idea of the funeral service and only go because it is expected. Parents: Private Charles Hastings BLOOD and Josephine Alvira HERRICK.
