bullet Richard BLOOD was born about 1617 in Ruddington, Nottingham, England. (943) How Richard is related to the other BLOODS of Groton and England is a source of much controversy in published texts and the Internet. Butler (634) states that he was the son of James BLOOD from Concord, but James was only 12 years older than Richard, so it seem far more likely that they were brothers. He emigrated before 1642 to Massachusetts Bay Colony. (944)(945) He moved in 1648 to Lynn, Essex, MA.(946) He was Served on a jury in 1654 in Lynn, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (905) Richard and his family fled Groton when it was attacked by Indians during the King Phillip's War. He returned from Concord to resettle in 1678. There were many clashes with the Indians. His son James was killed in 1692. On 20 Jun 1707, three of Richard's grandchildren were captured by Indians and taken to Canada. John and Zachariah BLOOD became chiefs of the Coughnawaga tribe and were among the founders of the St. Regis Reservation. He served as a soldier between 1675 and 1676 in King Philip's War (1675-1676). (957) Richard and his oldest son Joseph served as soldiers in the bloody King Philip's War against King Philip, chief of the Wampanoag Indians (1675 to 1676). Their names appeared on a roster dated 24 Mar 1676. He moved in 1678 to Groton, Middlesex, MA.(905) He died on 7 Dec 1683 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. (958)(959) (960) Before his death, Richard deeded his land to his sons. Died intestate. His estate was divided among the Widow Isabel and their three sons. For years, Richard was the largest taxpayer in Groton. He granted 60 acres (as one of the original propetors of Groton) in Groton, Middlesex, MA. (961)(962) Land totaling 755 acres was granted to 50 proprietors in plots from 5 to 600 acres in size. Richard's 60 acre grant was the largest grant to any of the 50 proprietors. bullet Colonel Thomas BLOOD was born in 1618 or 1628. Colonel Thomas has been described as the most famous of all BLOODs, a notorious scoundrel, and one of the most colorful and daring adventurers in the history of England. Blood's real-life adventures exceed in boldness and romance much of that which is merely fictitious. He before 1663. BLOOD was loyal to Parliament during the English Civil War. For his loyalty, he was made a justice of the peace and assigned large tracts of land in Ireland, but with the Restoration of Charles II, all of his property was confiscated. He joined rebellious Cromwellians in their plans of insurrection. He appeared in court in 1671.(972) In 1663, in his first notorious adventurer, Blood and fellow conspirators attempted to seize Dublin Castle and kidnap James Butler, Duke of Ormonde. Blood held the Duke responsible for confiscating his property in Ireland. One of the conspirators betrayed him but he continued with his plan, simply changing the date. The plan was foiled again and his comrades arrested, but Blood managed to escape. In a failed but daring and almost successful attempt to rescue his comrades, Blood fled to the hills. He was able to elude the law by wandering among the towns there in disguises. His comrades, including his brother-in-law, were convicted of High Treason, and executed. Blood may have lived in Ireland and/or Holland for a short time.

In 1670, after returning to England, he again attempted to kidnap the Duke of Ormonde. Blood and several others waylaid Ormonde's coach near Berkeley House, and seized Ormonde, with the intention of putting him to death on a common gibbet. While Blood went ahead to Tyburn to prepare a gibbet, however, Ormonde managed to escape.

Colonel Blood's most notorious escape occurred in May 1671, when he managed to steal the Crown Jewels of England from the Tower of London. It was an elaborate scheme. Over the course of several visits, BLOOD, disguised a priest, befriended a guard at the Tower. The two men must have gotten along well because Blood eventually gave the man his blessing in the marriage of his daughter. In actuality, BLOOD had no daughter. In his last visit to the Tower, Father Blood and associates obtained admittance by the guard and persuaded him to show them the Crown Jewels. At this point, BLOOD mugged the guard and made off with the crown, ball, and sceptre, and other regalia. Soon after, however, Blood and his comrades were captured. The jewels were still in their possession. BLOOD was repeatedly interrogated, by the examining magistrate but refused to confess. He then demanded an audience with none other than King Charles II himself. For reasons still unknown, Charles grated him his request (was he simply curious too meet such a bold rogue, or was Blood blackmailing him?). Blood not only confessed to stealing the crown jewels, but his plots against the Duke of Ormonde, and even an aborted attempt to assassinate Charles when he was bathing at Battersea! He allegedly said that he was so awed by Charles's royal presence that he decided against assassinating him. What exactly was exchanged between BLOOD and King Charles is unknown, but BLOOD managed a great turn of events. Not only did Charles pardon him and thus spare his life, but BLOOD was REWARDED for his actions. Charles returned his estate in Ireland, employed BLOOD as an intelligence agent, and awarded him with a handsome pension of 500 £ per year for life. Many have since speculated on how BLOOD managed such a miraculous reversal of fortune. Was Charles taken by the flattery and charm of a man with incredible charisma? Was he lied to? Was he blackmailed? (DNB II:694-7.) He died about 1680. Some say Blood died a natural death, but there are many that claim he died of arsenic poisoning.

Andrew Marvell (1612 - 1678), wrote the following poem about the life of Colonel Thomas BLOOD:

"Epigramme Upon Blood's attempt to steale the Crown:

When daring Blood, his rents to have regain'd,
Upon the English Diadem distrain'd,
He chose the Cassock, surcingle, and Gown
(No mask so fit for one that robbs a Crown);
But his lay-pity underneath prevayl'd
And while he spar'd the Keeper's life, he fail'd.
With the Priests Vestments had he but put on
A Bishops cruelty, the Crown was gone." He died on 24 Aug 1680. He was Baptist. In addition to using their church as places of worship, the Baptists used them for political plotting against a King who did not practice religious tolerance. During the war which Charles declared on Holland, Baptists passed information to the Dutch; and if the Dutch had succeeded in landing in England they would have had 30,000 men from Cromwell's old army to help them.
