This is probably a relative to Sarah and may even be her brother. He died on

Family Cemetery, Ballardsville, Lee, Mississippi, USA.

The following information comes from "A Gregory Colonial Family"
by Ben T. Gregory M.D.
"Alfred E. Gregory (24 December 1811-2 August 1870), eldest son of
George and Mary, married Sarah Elizabeth Mann (?-22 June 1877) They are believed
to have married in 1833 or 1834, as their eldest child was born ca. 1835. They
are buried, side by side, in the Gregory Family Cemetery near BallardsvilIe.
Unless otherwise specified, family members are buried in this cemetery.
Alfred and his entire family--mother, brother, sister, wife and children--were
in Mississippi by 1850. It is thought that the move west was made in 1846. This
is the year in which Alfred and Sarah sold their property, 105 acres, to Jeremiah
Gregory for $275. This transaction is located in Deed Book U14, p.3, Union County.
The deed is executed 3 January 1846 and recorded 12 January 1846.
This seemingly conflicts with the birthplace of one daughter, Matilda, as
shown on the 1850 Itawamba County census. She is listed as eight years of age
and born in Mississippi. However, two children of AIfred and Sarah were not enumerated,
which puts the accuracy of the census in doubt.
Alfred and Sarah were the parents of at least ten children: Alexander; Frances
E.; William H.; Nancy A.; Matilda; Andrew E.; Malinda C.; Alfred; Sarah J.; and
Mary Adelia."
Ben Gregory's book refers to Alfred as a brother to Hugh Gregory and being the
son of Mary and George Young Gregory. I have not been able to find any information
that provides this link other than both families being in the same area of South
Carolina in 1840, and both settling in Mississippi at the same time. James
Bodily.
Alfred died 1 month before the 1870 Census was taken. His wife Sarah is
listed as the head of household in the 1870 census. He was married to Sarah
Elizabeth MANN about 1833/34.(1)
Sarah Elizabeth MANN was born between 1812 and 1815 in , , South
Carolina, USA.(12)
(5) Sarah's birth date is derived from two sources, the 1860 Census
for Itawamba Co., Miss, which lists her as being 48 years old in 1860 thus calculated
to 1812. The second is her grave marker which states, "Born about 1815".
So we have listed her birth as being in the range of 1812 to 1815. She appeared
on the U.S. Census in 1840 in , Union, South Carolina, USA.
(7) Enumerated with Alfred in the 20-29 age group. She appeared on
the U.S. Census in 1850 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.
(8) Listed as Sarah, wife to Alfred Gregory, at the age of 36 and
born in South Carolina. She appeared on the State Census in 1853 in , Itawamba,
Mississippi, USA.(9) Enumerated as one
of the 7 females. She appeared on the U.S. Census in 1860 in , Itawamba, Mississippi,
USA.(12) Listed as wife to Alfred at
the at of 48. She appeared on the U.S. Census in 1870 in , Itawamba, Mississippi,
USA.(13) Sarah is widowed at this time
and is listed as the head of household at the age of 55. Listed in this census
is an Alfonso Gregory, who is probably the individual refered to in a guardianship
entry with William H. Gregory. Alfonso is probably Alfonso Carr. The census
marshall listed everyone with Sarah under the name Gregory, this is evident in
that the entry for Francis doesn't indicate that she is a Parker. She died on
22 Jun 1877.(5) She was buried in Gregory
Family Cemetery, Ballardsville, Lee, Mississippi, USA.
(5) Alfred E. GREGORY and Sarah Elizabeth MANN had the following children:
5 i.
Alexander GREGORY was born about 1835 in , , South Carolina, USA.
(8) He appeared on the U.S. Census in 1840 in , Union, South Carolina,
USA.(7) Enumerated with his father Alfred
as one of the male children under 5 years old. He appeared on the U.S. Census
in 1850 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.(8)
Listed as a son at the age of 15 and born in South Carolina. Alexander is
probably not one of the 4 males listed in the 1853 Mississippi census, He has
probably left the family by then. There appears to be no record of Alexander
after the 1850 census of Itawamba county, he may of moved to an area outside
of Itawamba county.
