1. Mary {GREGORY}(1)
was born about 1786 in , , North Carolina, USA.
(2) Her birth year of 1786 was calculated using information from the
1850 U.S. Census where Mary's age is listed as 64, and her birth place as North
Carolina. She appeared on the U.S. Census in 1840 in , Union, South Carolina,
USA.(3) Listed as Mrs. Mary Gregory and
as the head of household, she is enumerated along with one male (son, Hugh) age
20-29 and one female (daughter, Mary) age 15-19. Alfred Gregory, a possible
son of Mary, is listed later in the census records along with Starks Gregory,
Capt. Thomas Gregory and William Gregory. She appeared on the U.S. Census in
1850 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.(4)
Listed living with her son Hugh Gregory, at the age of 64. She appeared on
the State Census in 1853 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA. This is an enumerated
census and Mary appears to be one of the 4 females in the household. She died
in Sep 1858 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.(5)
We have obtained this information from her grave marker. She was buried
in Bogeufala Cemetery, Mooreville, Lee, Mississippi, USA.
(6) Her grave marker reads "Sept. 1858 - 70 years old",
thus giving us another possible birth year of 1788.
Mary is listed in the book "A Gregory Colonial Family", by Ben
T. Gregory, on page 237. She is described by Ben as "Mary Gregory (?-September
1858), daughter of Gerard and Freelove, married her first cousin, George Young
Gregory. She was born in South Carolina and died in Lee County, Mississippi."
I have not been able to verify the aforementioned relationship given in
Ben's book, and have actually generated alot of doubt as to its validity. Ben
Gregory refers to the information being supplied by Mrs. Mamie Estes Bryan and
Mrs. Arcada Morgan of Mississippi.
A George Gregory, of Union Co. SC, was enumerated in 1810, being in the
26-45 age group, with a wife in the 26-45 age group. This places George's wife
in the birth range of 1765-1784. They have 3 male and 2 female children with
them, the oldest being born between 1795 and 1800. Thus Mary Gregory (if born
in 1786) would have been between 9 and 14 years old when this oldest child was
born and George's enumerated wife in 1810 would have been between 16 and 35.
There is no reference to a George Gregory or a Mary Gregory for the next 2 census
records for South Carolina.
In the 1840 census we find Mrs. Mary Gregory with 2 children (Hugh and Mary
Ann) both born after 1814. We also find a Alfred Gregory in the same census,
born after 1813. Alfred is also considered to be one of Mary's sons in Ben Gregory's
book.
The 1850 Mississippi census entries lists Mary's and Alfred's birth as being
NC, Hugh and daughter Mary Ann as SC, placing Mary in SC after 1813. I have
not been able to obtain any reliable information as to Mary's whereabouts or
her relationship with Union County, South Carolina prior to the 1840 census.
Mary {GREGORY} had the following children:
+2 i.
Alfred E. GREGORY.
+3 ii.
Hugh GREGORY.
4 iii.
Mary Ann GREGORY was born about 1822 in , Union, South Carolina, USA. She
appeared on the U.S. Census in 1840 in , Union, South Carolina, USA.
(7) She is enumerated with her mother, Mrs. Mary Gregory, in the age
group of 15-19. She appeared on the U.S. Census on 27 Oct 1850 in , Itawamba,
Mississippi, USA.(8) Living with her brother
Hugh Gregory after their move to Itawamba county, Mississippi. The 1850 census
lists her name as Mary Ann and gives an age of 28. She appeared on the State
Census in 1853 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.(9)
As one of the 4 females in the household of Hugh Gregory. She appeared
on the State Census in 1860 in , Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.
(10) She is probably one of the 6 females enumerated in the household
of Hugh Gregory (brother).
The 1853 and 1860 census for Mississippi give us numbers that indicate
she is still living with her brother as late as 1860, unfortunately the US census
of 1860 doesn't list Hugh and his family, so we are lacking the details of the
family for 20 years. By the 1870 census she is no longer with her brother and
his family, we haven't found any grave marker or marriage entry to explain her
whereabouts. |
