"During the late 1860's Itawamba county saw it's largest influx of
settlers since the founding of the country. During the post Civil War years,
times were hard in the south and many people were on the move to seek out a better
life.........."
"Simpson Comer was born on 17 March 1838 in Union County, South Carolina.
He was the son of Jason Comer and ____?____.......... Simpson, fourth child
of Jason Comer was reared in the Goshen Hill area of southern Union County. The
family home was a large two story frame dwelling that was built in 1836 by a
Mr. George Tucker. The two story home featured a wide plaza flanking three sides
of the home. The home is still standing today near present-day Carlisle, South
Carolina, and is the home of Sarah Stokes, whose late husband was a direct descendant
of Jason Comer."
"He first married Nancy Baldwyn and second Susanna Gregory. While in
South Carolina, Simpson was a plantation overseer. During the Civil War, he
served in Company C of the 18th South Carolina Regiment. He served as a private
under Capt. Haynes and enrolled on Dec 17, 1861. While in service he had a finger
shot off at the battle of Manassas during August of 1862 and was sent to the
hospital at Lynchburg on September 5th."
"During 1867, Simpson Comer of Union County, South Carolina became
part of the post war migration when he, along with his wife, Nancy Baldwyn and
four children left the Goshen Hill area of Union County and settled in the newly
formed Lee County in the hills of northern Mississippi, north of the present-day
Mooreville."

with his first wife Nancy and son James (Franklin) in the 1860 US Census for
Union Co. South Carolina. Simpson gives his age as 22, Nancy is 16 and James
is listed as 5 months old.
We haven't found an 1870 US census record for him in Itawamba county, after
their move, but they were accounted for in the 1880 census. By the 1880 census
Simpson's first wife had passed away and he had married Susannah Gregory. Simpson
gives his age as 40, Susannah as 22. The following children, from his first
marriage, living with him and Susannah are: Frank (James Frank), Eliza, Starks,
Willie, Fannie, Lettie and Lucy. Susannah has already given birth to two children
and they are listed as Emma, age1 and Florance, age 6/12.
