Captain John Browning(b.abt 1588), came to America in the ship"Abigail" in 1622. He sailed from Gravesend, England and landed on College Lands and then settled in Elizabeth City, Virginia. He was married in England about 1614 and had a number of children.
John Browning was generally known as Capt. John. He served as a B Burgess in Elizabeth City in 16129 and in that same year he purchased 250 acres of land. He is mentioned as a Burgess of Morris Bay in 1632 and a Burgess of Elizbeth City in 1635. In 1638 he purchased for 3,000 pds of tobacco all the lands lying in Mounds Bay and belonging to Thomas Grindon. This Capt. John Browning was the founder of one of the oldest and first families of Virginia. The plantation on which he lived is from three to four miles from Williamburg which was latter placed about five miles from Jamesburg.
