DISTRICT OF OUACHITA/STATE LAND OFFICE
The following is a list of landowners and the date of their land
transaction as it appears in the above titled ledger on file at
the Winn Parish Court House, Office of the Clerk of Court,
Winnfield, Louisiana.
This is indeed a very important source particularly for Winn and
Grant Parish researchers as Winn Court Houses burned three times
(c. 1868, 1885, 1917) with all records being destroyed in the
first two fires, both arson. Further, much of Grant Parish was
carved from a portion of Winn Parish in 1868.

Where as we are called upon to mourn the loss of a loved one. God in his
wisdom has seen fit to take from among us our sister and neighbor Mrs. Lucy
Shelton, wife of Jacob Shelton. She has been taken but only to be
transplanted in that celestial clime. She was among us from her birth Oct the
5, 1875 to her death Oct the 28, 1892, the short period of only 17 years, but
her life and character were so grand and noble we learned to love her. For
the last few years of her life she was a consistent Church member and also for
a number of years a member of our Sabbath School and her every word, act and
deed was that of a christian lady. We feel sad when we contemplate our loss
but rejoice that our loss is her eternal gain inasmuch as she is now freed
from ills incident to life and gone to where ills, trials and trouble have an
end.

There must be an error in this listing because the marriage license has Nolia and William J. Shelton wedding date as 15 November 1894.

Note from Tim Bonnette:
The evidence of connection to Nolia Mercer and William J. Shelton as parents of Jim Sampson Shelton comes from family records of Ruth Inez Mewborn Shelton the wife of Jim Sampson Shelton. She lists these two as parents of Jim Sampson and also that W.J. was known as Jake.

The evidence of connection of William Jacob Shelton to Jacob Shelton b. 1822 Alabama, d. 1873 Winn Par. Louisiana has not fully been substantiated by me. Records of Earle Copp list William Jacob Shelton b. abt 1856 in Marshall Co. MS as the son of Jacob Shelton b. 1822. I have not been able to complete research to substantiate. Research required will include: Death Certificate for W.J. if available, Marriage Certificate for W.J./Lucy/Nolia, Census records for 1860 MS, LA-Winn/Grant Parish, Census for 1880 same, 1890 same and 1900 same. Headline: Georgetown Youth Dies Monday in Blasting Accident
Leon Shelton, 26, of Georgetown, was killed in a dynamite blasting accident
just north of Little Creek at about 4 p.m., Monday, according to a verdict
rendered by Dr. F. A. Thomas, LaSalle Parish Coroner.
Shelton died of cerebral concussion and also incurred compound fractures of
the lower jaw, according to the coroner's report. A flying piece of blown
stump supposedly inflicted the death injuries.
John Elkins, individual contractor working on a contract basis with Hercules
Powder Company, said that he and his son found Shelton dead some time after
he had told the Georgetown youth to light three pops (dynamite charges placed
to break up stumps). Shelton was employed by Elkins. The fatal accident
occurred about one-third of a mile north of Little Creek.
Elkins reported that eh and Shelton were engaged in blasting pieces of stumps
and that his son was hauling them to the railroad in Searcy. "I sent Shelton
to light the last three pieces of stumps at about 3 p.m.," Elkins said.
Sometime later my son came back from Searcy and I remarked that Shelton
should have had the job done by that time, he stated. I asked my son if
Shelton was at the pickup, he added. (They used a pickup truck for
transportation to and from work.) When my son said that he wasn't, we
decided that we had better check and see if something went wrong, he stated.
Upon checking, Elkins and his son found Shelton dead about 25 feet from the
site of a blown stump.
Elkins reported that only two of the three pops he had assigned Shelton were
exploded.
Three-minute fuses were being utilized in the operation, Elkins reported.
Funeral services for Shelton were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, at the Georgetown
Baptist Church, where he was a member. Interment was in the Georgetown
Cemetery under the direction of Kinner & Stevens Home for Funerals, Jena.
The deceased is survived by his father, William H. Shelton; four brothers,
Henry Shelton of Pineville and Leo Shelton, Jake Shelton, William Shelton,
and R. Shelton of Hardwood; and one sister, Rubye Faye Shelton of Pineville.
