This son appears on the 1850 census in Tennessee. He is not living

It is believed she was a daughter of James by a #1 wife, name unknown who died between 1866-1868 when James re-married to Jane Hammonds.

She was married in her grandmother's home and there is no mention that Malinda had to sign for her, so she must have been 18 by that time.

Thomas H. Gaither
Martha Elizabeth, wife of Alvin Dyson
Zachariah Taylor Gaither
Francis Marion Gaither
Mary, wife of Wesley Richardson
Sarah Lydia, wife of Milton Ellis.

Emily Gaither is head of household in 1860 and 1870, listed in 1860 as a
"farmerist" and in 1870 as "farmer/housekeeper". But Sarah Lydia wasn't
born until after the 1860 census was taken, maybe not until as late as 1863
since she is listed as age 7 in 1870. She is listed as age 27 at her
marriage to Milton Ellis on January 3, 1888. There is an even younger
child in Emily's 1870 household, Susey C. Gaither, age 3. Noah does not

no reference to James, only his sons Asbury and Benjamin, so either he

Ref: Ken Ratledge Letter to Doris Spaulding of Susanville, CA in which
he states that he has a copy of a letter (no date given) from James
Ratledge writing from Clark Co., Indiana home to his father and mother
Elizabeth in Davie Co., NC.
James Ratledge traveled to Clark Co., IN to learn the tanning business
sometime around 1833 and remained several years. He attended school
there also. In the letter he refers to his mother as "Elizabeth" and
writes that ". . .he had heard from his brother John and family (now)
in Tenn." (Gibson Co.) He said he . . . "worked at a Tannery, but
couldn't make much" and that he "would return to NC the next spring,
but that winter would stay there and attend school." James was not
married at the time and his age is estimated at between 18-20.
His brother John had gone with him to Indiana originally as one of
John's children was born there about 1835.
James returned to North Carolina and started a tanning business on his
father's farm. Believe he and John may have gone to Indiana because
of the connection to the Jeremiah Jacobs family who lived there and
who had gone there from Rowan Co., NC about 1801. He also mentioned a
T. Ratledge, who lived in Indiana and was possibly a brother - the
male son shown on the 1790 census in Rowan Co,NC who may have also
gone to Indiana with the Jacobs and Gaither clan.

bullet James Sr. Ratledge was born about 1733 in Murderlill Hundred, Kent County, Deleware. He died after 1810 in Rowan County, North Carolina. BIOGRAPHY
James Ratledge (Sr) appears on Delaware Tax Lists for Kent Co. in
Murderkill Hundred in 1751 thru 1760 with an (S) after his name,
charged L12. He appears beginning on 1761 through 1776 tax lists
without the (S). From this information we can determine he was at
least 21 years old in 1751 and unmarried and so born about 1730 and
that he married at age 31 or 32. His brother appeared on the 1751 tax
list also for the first time, but there was no tax list for the
previous 3 years and since the father referred to Thomas as the elder
son we know he was older than James.
James Ratledge is listed on French & Indian War rolls dated 1757 with
his brothers Thomas and Moses which may account for the fact that he
was over 30 when he married.
Kent Co., Delaware Deed Records show James (Sr.) and his brother
Thomas were deeded 250 acres of land from his father, John Ratledge,
in 1768. Property which John Ratledge purchased in 1741 from Andrew
CaIdwell known as "Longacre". His father died in 1773 naming his son
James on his will.
Kent Co. Court Records show James Ratledge (Sr) was his brother
Thomas' heir in 1776. He could not write but signed with a very
distinctive "X" mark. The brother Moses Ratledge was a witness on the
document and signed his own name. In the following NC records James
Ratledge Sr. always signed his documents with his X and his son, James
Ratledge jr. signed his name.

The above 3 males under 21 or over 60- one being James Sr who is over
60 and 1 male under 21 is James jr. so the other male under 21~. after
1766) is probably Daniel b. 1767. Of the two daughters that we already
know who were married previous to this tax list - there would be a
total of 6 children for James and Ruth. Daniel is on the 1790 census
with 2 children and so nrarried soon after this tax list. The 3
females would be Ruth and daughters Matilda and Ruth who married after
1790. Whether or not there were older children who already left is not
known. They were not mentioned in his will.

James Jr. to have this property. James Ratledgejr. appears on the 1820
