MD (b. 1770) listed as a pauper * On the 1860 McMinn census Thomas spells his name with an 'a' and Sarah with a 'u', so it is possible they are not related. I have found other instances in McMinn Co. where poor people were taken in by other families and it confuses the family researcher who thinks they are in-laws. There may be mention in the court records for Thomas being allowed an allotment to care for a poor woman. However, other Ratledge researchers believe she is Sarah "Sally" Gatton b. MD dau of Azariah Gatton and sister to Benjamin Gatton who m. Matilda Ratledge sister of James Ratledge jr. This Sally Gatton listed in the Gatton family history as having married James Rutledge. This line of research needs further work. 1870 Census - McMinn Co.,TN - the 1870 census index shows no Ratledge or Rutledge in McMinn Co. Tn and this Thomas has not been found. Some of his sons were in the Civil War and it's possible Thomas and Marilla died during this time. Parents: James Jr. Ratledge and Edy Johnston. He was married to Marilla Griffith on Jun 19 1835 in Carter County, Tennessee. Pinkney Ratledge was born in 1850 in Monroe County, Tennessee. He died on
Sep 16 1920 in Monroe County, Tennessee. BIOGRAPHY
Per Lena Lehnert information 6 Sept 1978 relayed to her by Charlie Ratledge, grandson of Cathryn and Pinkney "Cathryn Akin Thomas married Pinkney Ratledge, March 31st 1870 at Madisonville, TN (has copy of record) Mammy Thomas was very much against this marriage as she thought that Cathryn could have done better. Cathryn and her mother were both real small people, about five foot two and not over 110 lbs. He said that even when she died, a man could have spanned her waist with his hands. The other two girls were larger and got plump before they died. Cathryn and Pinkney had four children and lived near Madisonville (Tellico Plains). About this time everyone was getting the bug to go to Texas. Possibly because so many people had lost so much throught looting and burning during the Civil War and wanted to get a new start. Anyway a bunch of people, including some of the Thomas' and Cathryn and Pinkney, started outbound for Texas. They had a covered wagon pulled by oxen. They were somewhere in the Cumberland Mountains when the children on the train started coming down with some sort of fever. It was where the town of Crossville now stands that they stopped. A lot of people died, mostly children. Cathryn lost her four young children. They buried them on a little knoll above Crossville and when the train pulled out, Cathryn and Pinkney turned back. Parents: Benjamin Ratledge and Mary Polly Massey. He was married to Catherine Aiken on Mar 31 1870 in Madisonville, Tennessee. Willian
