Tom Stafford served in the Army during World War II. Assigned
to the 6th Combat Engineer Special Assault Brigade, he participated in
the early assault on OMAHA Beach (D-Day June 6, 1944) A member of the
6th Combat Engineer Special Assault Brigade assigned the mission of
helping the 29th Infantry Div. across the beach and on into Normandy.
After Normandy, he transferred to the 87th Inf. Div and served in a
Rifle Platoon through the Battle of The Bulge, the assault on the
Siegfried Line, the assault crossing of the Mosel and Rhine Rivers and
the chase trough Germany into Czechoslovakia where he was when the war
finally ended on May 8, 1945. The division was immediately shipped
back to the States since they had been selected to participate in the
assault on the Japanese mainland.
They didn't get there until the war was over. Having received five
battlefield promotions including a battlefield commission (Corporal to
2nd Lt.), he decided to remain in the Army, serving in the
Philippines with a Philippine Scout Division; then back to Germany to
participate in the Berlin Airlift and, later, with the 1st Infantry
Div. during the Cold War. He then served two tours in Korea, first
with the 7th Infantry Division and, then with the 25th Infantry
Division.
Returning to the States, he retired from active duty with a medical
disability in 1963 but continued to serve as a Dept. of Defense
civilian employee (Comptroller) until he retired again in 1987 ,
