Family tradition states William originally joined the Confederate Army and then was captured and taken prisoner. William drew a pension up to June 1896 when he was dropped from the rolls for disloyalty. Then in July 1896, he asked to have the pension restored. He died in 1898 and letters in the pension file show Sarah then got a lawyer who petitioned twice to restore her pension - once in 1899 and again in 1902. She did finally get it and received $30.00 a month for the rest of her life.
