bullet John Webster As a resident of Amherst County. Virginia. John Webster enlisted at the age of 17 as a private in the 1st Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line at Fredericksburg, Virginia in Captain spotswood Candridge's Company of light Dragoons and in the regiment of Colonel Theodrick Bland. He fought in the battles or Brardywine, Monmouth Courthouse. and White Plains. He was also at Paole Tavern under General Wayne when his company was betrayed by one of their own men and the tavern keeper.

A detailed account of his service was recorded in his application for a pension, the File Number of which is R-ll2a3 at the National Archives. The ''R'' means that it was rejected. This is hard to understand since the pay vouchers for the various quarters that he was in service are now in his file. Not only was John's application rejected, but his widow's application for pension. After her death, his son Pleasant Webster applied for the pension they should have had to be added to his estate He was sending~ In affidavits as late as 1854 to prove his fathers Service but to no avail

There was one incident that John was probably too modest to mention In his application, that Pleasant mentioned as having, not only been told to him by his father, but by men who had served In the same baffle. He said that after one battle, (he thought it was Brandywine) and during the retreat of the Americans, a half spent cannonball struck down the commanding officer of his company within 80 yards of the British line. His father immediately dismounted. Raised the wounded officer to his horse. And escaped with him amid showers of bullets from the enemy and shouts of applause from his countrymen! It was first decided that he would be made an officer 'on the spot'' but his officers reconsidered because of John Webster's youth and lack of formal education.
