Opening of 1984 baseball season recalls an experience Everett Booe, a
star baseball and football player for Davison College, had with the
Pittsburgh Pirates when playing for them in 1912.
In mid-season game Manager Fred Clark of the Pirates sent Booe in as a
pinch hitter. In those days when there were no public address
systems, the umpire made all the announcements: so as Everett strode
to the batter's box he asked "What's your name?"
"Booe," Everett replied.
The umpire blinked. "I don't want any foolishness. What's your name?"
"Booe" shouted Everett.
The umpire got mad and waved his finger in Everett's face. Manager
Clark shouted from the dugout, "What's going on up there?"
"This bush leaguer thinks he's a wise guy," said the umpire. "What's
his name?" "Booe" said the manager. The umpire became so infuriated
that it took the efforts of both the manager and Booe to convince him
they were not spoofing. Then the umpire faced and hollered to the
fans "Booe now batting for Hennessey." And the fans responded,
