He came west when he was a young man stopping in Tennessee where he married and lived a few years. Afterward he moved to and settled in Desota County, Miss., living there until 1860 or 1861. He came to Arkansas and settled near Walter's Chapel, where he spent the remainder of his life. His parents died when he was a young boy and having no protector he was apprenticed by the court to a tanner to learn the trade. He served his apprenticeship faithfully. When his time was up at the age of 17 or 18 he knew how to curry leather and serve a regular task master, but did not know a letter in the alphabet, having never attended school a day or heard a sermon preached, yet at this age he was determined to learn how to read and be a farmer. He secured a home in a religious enviroment and was given permission to go to school three months after the crop was made, and to sunday school every Sunday. He was a true Confederate solider and was six months in a Federal Prison. He held office of Sgt, in Fagans Corp., and was a Colonel in the State Militia, while in Tennessee, and a major of a Militia. Served in a organization formed before the war. He represented Prairie County two terms in the lower house of our State legislature with honor to himself and his people.
