John Calhoun Booe

Born in a tavern, orphaned at age 2, raised as a bond servant. While
living at Sheffield, North Carolina with the Chestire family John
Calhoun was asked by Mrs. Chestire to accompany her visitors, a young
widow and a young child to her home across a foot log over a swollen
stream. Her name was Louisa Little Beeman, she married John Calhoun
on August 15, 1844 and six children were born to this marriage. John
Calhoun was a farmer with large amounts of land. On December 5, 1858,
John Calhoun, a widower with six children married Rachel Baity and
four children were born to this marriage. In latter years, John
Calhoun grieved for his bother Isaac who was taken to Tennessee by the
Sain Family and never returned. When a child was born to Robert Lee
and Tabitha Booe they named him Isaac, John Calhoun rejoiced. He was
at peace becaused he believed that God sent this child to take the
place of the brother that was taken to Tennessee. This Isaac could
grow up in the Forks of the Yadkin.
It is stated that John Calhoun attended Bear Creek Church, John
Calhoun and one of the other members had a disagreement over a cow and
a turnip patch. It was taken before the church and the church sided
up the other individual that made John Calhoun upset so that he left
this church congregation. He and his second wife is buried in this
Church Cemetery.

John Charles Booe Taking over the business in 1964, John Booe is noted for bringing the business
into the modern age without sacrificing quality. John is further noted for
developing the wholesale business and expanding the mail-order business.
John also developed additional liquor-filled chocolates, including rum, scotch,
cognac, and the Kentucky Irish Coffee. He expanded the factory and increased
candy production. In 1997, John sold the business to his son Charles Booe. Charles and John run the business together today. Parents: Charles Douglas Booe and Ruth Hanly.

married. Mattie's mother was Elizabeth, a slave and her father was
Thomas, which was also John's father. This secret was never told
until John and Mattie fell in love. When his father told him, he lost
his temper and brutally beat his father nearly killing him. John
never spoke to his father again. About 1883 the family moved to
Nebraska.

Went to Holy Communion at The Dutch Meeting House in 1792. In 1786 he
bought 136 acres of land from his uncle, Jacob Booe, on Dutchman's
Creek and 137 acres from Jacob Hamilton on Dutchman's Creek. He lived
in Rowan County, North Carolina until about 1813 and then moved west,
eventually settling in Scotts Prairie, IN.

name from Joseph to Jacob and moved first to Illiniois then to Kansas.
Joseph became an elder in the Pentacostal Church in Galena, Kansas.
Because of the shame he had in his family, he and his descendants
became firmly intrenched in the church. Co-founded the Smelterhill
Gospel Workers Church which was a Pentacostal Church devoted to the
mine workers and the poor and elderly of the area.
