A educator, he became Kenan Professor of History and Government at the
University of North Carolina. Authored many books, was president of
the North Carolina Literary and Historical Society and a member of the
National Board of Historical Service and a trustee of the University
of North Carolina. He was managing editor of the James Sprunt
Historical Studies and a member of the Board of editors of the North
Carolina Histiorical review. He was the first Archivist in North
Carolina appointed by President Roosevelt. He planned and oversaw the
construction of the present Archives Building and collected data that
