John Allen Gentry, was the natural son of Margaret Nancy Gentry and John Gabriel Hartin. He was raised by his grandmother Elizebeth Anderson Gentry Mathis and her #2 husband James Mathis. He called his 1/2 uncle William A.B. Mathis, "Uncle Billy".

Family history relates John ran away from home at age 16 to the Indian Nation (OK) and returned to marry his neighbor Sarah Adams. He was underage and James Mathis signed for him. John and Sarah Gentry lived on 5 acres of the Wm. Adams farm near Roy, Douglas Co., MO. Wm. Adams died in 1898 and within the next few years the combined families of Adams, Stacy and John and Sarah Gentry began the migration west.

John and Sarah Gentry left Douglas Co., MO and moved first to Waggoner Co., Oklahoma, then to Darby, Ravalli Co., Montana. By 1910 they were back in Coweta, Waggoner Co., Oklahoma, 1912 back to Montana, in 1917 to Phoenix, Arizona and finally to San Fernando, California by 1923. They farmed mostly and in Arizona, John ran a store. When they moved, he would sell everything and they would take the train to the next destination. When they left Phoenix, they traveled in a family group in two touring cars and it took 4 days. They had several flat tires along the way and it was very hot. A small house was purchased in San Fernando, CA on 1 1/2 acres on the corner of Telfair & LaRue Streets. John then worked for a landscape company and Sarah and her daughters worked in the local "Packing House" canning fruit and vegetables. They raised their own vegetables and Sarah kept a large pen full of chickens which provided food and also she sold the eggs.

There is no specific signed document to prove John Gentry's parentage, but it was a known fact among all the related Gentry/Stacey/Adams families. Sarah Adams Gentry told her Granddaughter Pamela Geisler Smith this information for a school genealogy project in 1950 and Gladys Gentry Geisler related other information at a later date. Also the children of John Hartin and Nancy Hale knew John. Ollie Hartin visited the Gentry family in San Fernando. Correspondence with John's 1/2 sister Susan Sanders and her daughter Fay Guthery - mention John's parentage and also Martha Stacey Jenkins Spaulding desc. who lives in Phoenix, AZ has a handwritten note stating the circumstances of John's birth.

bulletThomas Elmer Gentry was born in Jun 1893 in Douglas Co, Missouri. He died in 1959 in Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co, California. Was a WWI vet. Served in 5 major battles in Europe.

At a very young age while the family was in OK he became involved with an Indian girl. The girl's family made threats and when the girl became pregnant the Gentry family left Oklahoma and moved to Montana. They later moved back to Oklahoma and lived only a few miles from where they had lived before and Thomas again began seeing the same Indian girl. This time her family forced Tom to marry her and she became pregnant again.
He entered the military service and never returned to her. After the war he lived with his parents in Arizona and later moved with them to California. His mental and physical health was ruined from the gas and shell shock endured in the trenches during the war and he ended his days in the hospital at Sawtelle in Santa Monica CA. He is buried in the National cemetary there. Many of the soldiers returned from that war with their lives ruined by what they witnessed and lived through.
