Johanna lost her hearing in the second year of her live and she went on to live at the school for the deaf in Groningen.
She arrived there on September 3 1891 and left July 11 1900 after successfully completing her education and the trade of a seamstress

Jan and Johanna operated a successful tailoring business in Uithuizen.
Due to their physical challenge they could operate their business without any distractions and together were able to finish a costume in a single day.
A rather amazing feat considering the tools and implements available to them in those days.
In spite of their success, poverty was Johanna's lot after her husbands death in 1941.
She died in a "poor house" ( Armen huis ) in Uithuizen.
In a conversation between my cousin Wim in Aduard and his father Aalt Willem on april 3/ 2001,
my uncle Wim Aalt Willem told that Johanna was financially taken advantage of by her two sons Harm and Gerrit and it was they who placed her in the home for the destitute In Uithuizen.
