My paternal lines lived in Northeastern Ohio around Stark and Summit Counties; Lancaster Co., Fayette, and Westmoreland Counties, Pennsylvania for GOCKLEY/GOGLEY, MYERS, RICE, UPLINGER, WEBER/WEAVER, WITWER, most with origins in Germany and Switzerland. These ancestors came to America to escape religions persecution and sought freedom to worship God in the manner they chose. Most were Brethren, and were considered Pennsylvania Dutch. The ones I knew growing up had a very distinct Pennsylvania Dutch accent. In the 1800s, some spoke German and English, and others, only German. Most were farmers, though several of them were shoemakers and laborers. My maternal lines lived in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia for CROSS, EASTERLING, FORNEY, FUGATE/FUGITT, JENKINS, JOHNSON, STAMPER, WILSON, WISE, with origins in Wales and England. Most were coal miners and many were dirt poor. They were backwoodsy, hardy types. Some of these ancestors were in the Confederate army.
I have connections to EBIE/EBY, MOHLER, RININGER
My stumbling blocks:
WITWER: Catharine was married to John UPLINGER/OBLINGER. She was born 3 Mar 1830 in PA, and died in Summit Co. OH 18 Jan 1904. She is buried in Green (Greensburg). I believe her parents were from Germany. She may have had a brother, Jacob. Would like her parents' names and siblings.
GOCKLEY/GOGLEY: Joshua is the parental grandfather of my gr grandma, Flora Alice GOCKLEY. He was b. around 1800 in Lancaster PA, and was married to Mary/Maria HOOVER. I would like to know how he connects to the vast GOCKLEY tree from Pennsylvania, and also how Mary/Maria HOOVER connects with any HOOVER line.
WEAVER: Henry is the father of my gr grandma. He was b. 9 Jun 1833 in Stark Co., Ohio where he d. 23 Mar 1907. He m. Mary Elisabeth STINER and their kids were Allen, David, John, Henry, Nancy, Susan, Maria(h). I was always told his ancestors' surname was WEBER before coming from Germany, but census, death and marriage records differ saying either Pennsylvania, or Ohio.
TRUXEL: Daniel married my Nancy RICE b. 1841 and they had Cora, Nellie, Lizzie, John B.
My husband's lines are:
BAUER, BLITCH, BRANNON, GODBOLD, GOOLSBY/GOLDSBY/GOULDSBY, HOWELL, KILPATRICK, NOEGEL, in Florida, Georgia, Alabama.
Glad to share any information I have. Please send anything no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, as I have branched outward to siblings, in-laws (and outlaws).
