Catherine Montgomery :
Occupation : Train driver (drove fish train from Aberdeen to Newcastle). Met
his wife in Aberdeen. Head of power station, Wellesley Colliery, Buckhaven,
Fife. Finally retired from there at 75 years of age.
Very creative, excellent model maker, especially ships, could make ship fully
rigged in glass bottle. Made me a dolls house with furniture. For someone so
cantankerous (to hide shyness) he had a great love of animals. When he had a
dog walked miles, and took it for a pint with him. Fed the "back door sparrows"
and the "front door sparrows" every day. The hedge in front of the
house was designed and trimmed by him (topiary). Obviously a highly intelligent
man who had not had the chance of an education. Sent to work at age 12 - first
job as cabin boy on Burntisland to Granton Ferry (the Willie Muir). One of nine
children, mother a widow. Survived an attack of smallpox when he was a boy.
Not a reader - more of a doer. Very good around the house - treated grandma like
a duchess in that he got up every morning, lit the fire, brought in the coal,
made the breakfast, peeled veg etc (i.e. when he was retired). However he did
not speak much and could be quite an old grump. Was a very strict parent and
did not tolerate bad behaviour. He had nicknames for everybody in the street
- some were very funny, e.g. "Tiptoe Lil". Very shy and self-contained,
and rarely let his hair down. Not religious. Height around 5'3" - 5'4".
Very fair when young, skin very fresh even when old. Eyes bright.
