child vi. John MCKENZIE Photo was born on 24 Nov 1828 in Kinghorn.(200) He was baptized on 28 Dec 1828 in Kinghorn. He emigrated in 1853 from Melbourne, Australia. John McKenzie left Scotland to escape the economic depression following the potatoe famines in the late 1840's. They came to Australia under contract as shepherds to replace those men who had left the squatters sheep runs to go to the gold diggings. John Mck was the son of Hugh also a flax dresser and heckle maker (a flaxdresser uses a comb frame called a heckle to dress or comb the flax). He was a Shepherd in Jun 1853 in Mt William Station, Australia. On 21st May 1853 they and a number of fellow passengers departed to work for Chirnsides. Mck were employed as shepherds. 12 months was the original term of work. By the late 1850's they were living and working at Carranballac. In 1872 James was sent to scout out the Heytesbury area between Camperdown and Port Campbell. He was a Farmer between 1878 and 1897 in Inglewood, Victoria, Australia. In 1878 took up 100 acres (part of James 1875 selection) in the Parish of Paarette. This was purchased in 1896. He died on 31 May 1897 in Newfield, Victoria, Australia. He was buried on 2 Jun 1897 in Port Campbell, Victoria, Australia.
