28. Frederick Henry BRANDT Sr.⁽⁴⁰⁹⁾ was born on 12 Sep 1815 in Mecklenberg, Germany.⁽²¹³⁾⁽⁴¹⁰⁾⁽⁴¹¹⁾⁽⁴¹²⁾ On the 1920 census Fred's son Fred said that he was from Alsace-Lorraine and spoke French. He served in the military before 1847 in Prussian Army, Prussia.⁽⁴¹³⁾ He immigrated about 1850 to from Prussia to U.S..⁽⁴¹⁴⁾ He was living in 1853 in Lancaster, Erie Cnty, NY. He owned lot #928 purchased Pendleton on 23 Sep 1854 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴¹⁵⁾ He resided at R7, T15, Lot69, farmer 1 between 1855 and 1879 in Pendleton, Niagara Cnty, NY. They were listed as boarders in 1855, owned a home (lot 12, T13, R7, 1/2 A) in 1860, and are shown with a home in 1865 and 1869 (lot 69, T13, R7, 12 3/4 A). He was a farmer between 1855 and 1879 in Pendleton, Niagara Cnty, NY. He owned lot 69, township 13, 10 acres, Pendleton NY in 1865 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴¹⁶⁾ He was described as 5"6" tall, black eyes, black hair, dark complexion on 3 Mar 1865 in Geneseo, NY.⁽⁴¹⁷⁾ Fred's physical description on the muster roll. He was a laborer on 3 Mar 1865 in Geneseo, NY.⁽⁴¹⁷⁾ He served in the military from 3 Mar 1865 to 19 Jul 1865 in Company G 169th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, NY.⁽⁴¹⁷⁾⁽⁴¹⁸⁾⁽⁴¹⁹⁾ Enlisted Elmira, NY for 3 years as a private "substitute". Honorable discharge 19 July 1865 at the end of the war Charlotte NC as a private.

Fred's sons were canalers. Fred probably heard of the need for a "substitute" enlistee through travelers on the canal. The canal was a popular means of transportation between Troy NY and Buffalo NY during those times. Fred saw an opportunity to make a lot of money, and given his Prussian Army experience, figured it was the right thing to do. He was ill with malaria fever, dysentery, and jaundice resulting in asthma on 4 Jul 1865 in Raliegh, NC.⁽⁴¹⁹⁾ Attended at Magnolia, NC for malaria, dysentary, swollen spleen, jaundice, emaciation, and swollen legs by John Knowlsen MD. He retired on 4 Apr 1878 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴²⁰⁾ He was described as 5'5", 116 lbs., dark complexion, age 60 on 6 Nov 1878 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴¹⁹⁾ He died on 16 May 1879 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴⁰⁹⁾⁽⁴¹⁹⁾⁽⁴²¹⁾⁽⁴²²⁾ Fred died from consumption. Fred was attended to in his last days by Dr.'s VanBuren and Cherry.

His wife, Catharine, was shown as a widow in the 1880 census, and Frederick was listed in the 1878-79 City Directory. The national Archives lists his death as 16 May 1879, as does his headstone.

On May 31, 1888 his property in Pendleton was turned over to his widow with a quit claim deed, Catherine Arenz (remarried since his death to Henry Arenz). Catherine bought out her children's interest interest to the property for $250 each. The children were: Martin, Lena, Fred H., Joseph, Marion, and Solomon. He was buried on 18 May 1879 in Good Shepherd R.C. Church Cemetery, Pendleton, Niagara County, NY.⁽⁴²³⁾⁽⁴²⁴⁾ He was German; Prussian. He was also known as Friedrich Brand.⁽⁴²⁵⁾ He was married to Maria Katrina DRECKMANN in Aug 1853 in First German Methodist Episcopal Church, Buffalo, Erie County, NY.⁽⁴²⁶⁾ The German Methodist Church was on Mortimer Street. Service performed by Rev. Schwollen. This was Fred's first, and Mary Katherine's second marriage. Other records suggest that they were married in Lancaster NY.

The First German M.E. Church on Mortimer church first built at the corner of Sycamore and Ash street. The Mortimer Street building was constructed in 1871. Therefore, Maria remembers the marriage place wrong, but probably remembers the Rev. Schwollen correctly.

Rev. Schwollen was a parishoner at the Ash Street building, and helped found the Second German M.E. Church in Buffalo. Rev Schwollen gave services at Ash Street, and also in Black Rock (Maria may have met Rev. Schwollen when living in Black Rock). When building the Second congregation, Rev. Schwollen often used schools and houses. Eventually, the Second congregation built a church on East Street, and is still there in 1997.

29. Maria Katrina DRECKMANN⁽⁴²⁷⁾⁽²²⁵⁾ was born on 7 Oct 1825 in City of Cologne (Koln), Province of Prussia, Germany.⁽²¹³⁾⁽⁴²⁸⁾⁽⁴²⁹⁾⁽²²⁵⁾⁽⁴¹⁹⁾⁽⁴³⁰⁾⁽⁴³¹⁾ Mary stated her birth date in an interview late in life. According to the 1850 Black Rock census, Catherine is 22, not 25. Each source document shows her age differently. Some national Archives documents show her as 72 on 17 Feb 1899 (b.1827?), and 92 on 11 May 1917 (b.1825?). Her death certificate indicates 8 Dec 1823 (95y 11days).

The 1920 census said that she was born Alsace-Lorraine and spoke French. She immigrated in 1850 to from Prussia to U.S..⁽⁴³²⁾ Apparently immigrated with Anthony Hartman, and son Peter, maybe pregnant with Lena. She was living in 1850 in Black Rock, Erie County, NY. She was husband Anthony Hartman died on 10 Apr 1850 in Buffalo, Erie Cnty, NY.⁽⁴¹⁹⁾ She resided at Goodell St., Buffalo NY in 1851 in Buffalo, Erie Cnty, NY.⁽⁴¹⁹⁾ She was living in 1853 in Lancaster, Erie Cnty, NY. She owned lot #928 purchased in Pendleton on 23 Sep 1854 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY. She was husband in the war between 3 Mar 1865 and 19 Jul 1865 in Raliegh, NC. She was husband Fred Brant died on 16 May 1879 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY. She resided at 12 3/4 acres, Pendleton from 1880 to 1891 in Pendleton, Niagara Cnty, NY. She was applied for widow's pension on 30 Jun 1882 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴³³⁾ She owned lot 69, town 13, 17 acres, Pendleton NY in 1888 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴³⁴⁾ She resided at Pendleton, NY; Mrs. Henry Arenz in 1901 in Town of Pendleton, NY.⁽⁴³⁵⁾ She was applied for remarried widow's pension on 19 Dec 1916 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴³⁶⁾ She died on 19 Dec 1918 in Clarkson, Monroe Cnty, NY.⁽⁴³⁷⁾⁽⁴³⁸⁾⁽⁴³⁹⁾ Mary died in the home of her daughter, Marion Burch, Clarkson NY, of cerebral apoplexy. She was buried on 21 Dec 1918 in Ridgeville (Bear Ridge) Cemetery, Pendleton, NY.⁽⁴⁴⁰⁾ She was Germany, Prussia. She was also known as Mary Catherine Hartman.⁽⁴²⁷⁾ Mother is lsited as Mary Hartman on marriage license of Martin Brant. She was also known as Mary Katherine Dreckman.⁽⁴⁴¹⁾ Mother is listed as Catherine Dreckman on Fred Brant's death certificate. She was also known as Mary Katherine Arenz, Mary K. Arens. Catherine's maiden name is listed as a Dreckman on her son Fred's death certificate, and as a Hartman on her other son Martin's marriage license. She is listed as Hartman on her son's marriage license in 1888. In 1900 Catherine is listed indicating that 8 of her 9 children are still living. She was, in fact, born Dreckman, and was once married to Anthony Hartman. Children were:

ii. Catherine BRANT was born on 3 Feb 1855 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽²¹³⁾⁽⁴⁴⁴⁾ She was baptized on 18 Feb 1855 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴⁴⁵⁾ She was named after Catherine Bodensen of Pendleton.
iii. Joseph S BRANT was born on 26 Jul 1857 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽²¹³⁾⁽⁴⁴⁶⁾⁽⁴⁴⁷⁾ He was baptized on 26 Jul 1857 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴⁴⁸⁾ He resided at 39 Park Ave, Tonawanda NY on 1 Jun 1915 in City (Village) of Tonawanda, Erie Cnty, NY.⁽⁸⁸⁾ He died in 1937 in Buffalo, Erie Cnty, NY.⁽²³²⁾ He was named after S. Joseph Lehman of Pendleton. He is listed as a "canaler" in 1875, apparently working on the Erie Canal.

Joseph was a wealthy man at his death, owning several properties, mortgages, and a considerable amount of cash and bank deposits. According to his niece Minnie E. Olver, however, "he lived as a pauper".

Martin BRANT was born on 24 Dec 1859 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽²¹³⁾⁽⁴⁴⁹⁾ He was baptized on 24 Dec 1859 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴⁵⁰⁾ He was a canaler, boatman between 1875 and 1882 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY. He is listed as a "canaler" in 1875, apparently working on the Erie Canal. Martin is listed as a boatman on his marriage license in 1882. He was named after Martin Mayer. Martin is shown as a farm laborer in the 1900 census.

Mary Ann BRANT⁽⁴⁵¹⁾ was born on 3 Jun 1862 in Pendleton Centre, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽²¹³⁾⁽⁴⁵²⁾ She was baptized on 5 Jul 1862 in Town of Lockport, Niagara Cnty, NY.⁽⁴⁵³⁾ She was living in 1882 in Brockport, Monroe Cnty, NY.⁽⁴¹⁹⁾ She was living in 1918 in Clarkson, Monroe Cnty, NY. She was also known as Marion. She was named after Mary Ann Butler. She is shown as Mariam in 1865, as Maryann in 1875, and as Marian in 1880.

Not present at 1915 census. He resided at 68 King St, Tonawanda NY on 1 Jun 1915 in City (Village) of Tonawanda, Erie Cnty, NY.⁽⁸⁸⁾ The 1910 census showed Solomon working as a farmer.
