He was married to Eliza GROSE on 25 Dec 1846 in St.Mary's Chapelry Church, Parish of Lambeth, County of Surrey, England.⁽³⁴⁴⁾ The St Marys Church where Eliza and John OLVER were married is right next door to Lambeth Palace (Home of the Archbishop of Canterbury). It is now (1999) a Museum of Garden History. All seven children of John T. were by his first wife Eliza, as per a newspapaer article in 1886.

According to a family story, Eliza Olver died after falling down the stairs, apparently after seeing the ghost of her dead brother. Her death date is based upon census information, and birth information of her children. Niece claims that her maiden name was Grosse. The 1860 census shows that Eliza had six children. Son Thomas' marriage license shows her GROSE maiden surname. Children were:
