Tthe 363-mile Erie Canal, begun July 4th, 1817 and completed in 1825, also accounted for the earlier development of central and western New York, and was a very popular mode of travel between Troy, NY on the Hudson River and Buffalo on Lake Erie. The first boat to make the entire canal trip was the Seneca Chief, which left Buffalo on October 26th, 1825 and arrived in New York City on November 4th. Travel at the time was at the break-neck speed of about one and one-half miles per hour and cost about one and one-half cents per mile! That's a bit under $50 to cross New York. (The Thruway is cheap in comparison!) The Erie Canal was upgraded a number of times after it's initial completion up through 1862. The development of the railroads all but shut down the canal by the 1890s, being much faster and more comfortable. But still construction continued between 1903 and 1918 when
the combined New York State Barge Canal system, 524 miles in total length, and which included the old Erie Canal and others, was opened.
