"O'Neill

This is among the twelve most numerous Irish surnames and is one of the very few which is spelled the same in English and in Irish. Although there are several septs by this name in Ireland, it was the O'Neill's of Ulster who played the greatest role in Irish history. The first man of this sept to bear the surname was Domhnall O'Neill, whose grandfather Niall, King of Ireland, was killed in a battle with the Danes in 919 A.D.

The O'Neill's were the chief family of the Cinel-Eoghain ('Descendants of Eoghan') whose territory was called Tir-Eoghain (Eoghain's country), now known by its anglicized name, Tyrone. In ancient times this territory included not only the present-day county of Tyrone, but also most of Co. Derry and part of Co. Donegal. The name Eoghain derives from Eoghan, or Owen, the fifth son of Niall of the Nine Hostages (another Niall from the one mentioned above), an ancient King of Ireland and a remote ancestor of the O'Neills. This Niall is famous as the kidnapper of St. Patrick, whom he took to Ireland as a slave about the year 405 A.D. It was he who gave the name of 'Scotia Minor' to Scotland when Ireland was still known as Scotia Major. From this early time until the end of the 17th century when Ulster ceased to be the leading Gaelic province of Ireland, the O'Neills figure prominently among the great men of Irish history.

The 16th and 17th centuries produced the most famous O'Neills in Irish history, men who stood out in Ireland's continuous struggle to cast off British rule. They include Con Bacach O'Neill (1484-1559), the first Earl of Tyrone; Shane O'Neill (1520-1567); Hugh O'Neill (1540-1616), second Earl of Tyrone; Owen Roe O'Neill (1590-1649); Sir Phelim O'Neill (1604-1653); and Hugh O'Neill (d. 1660). After the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 many O'Neills fled to the Continent and were to be found among the outstanding officers of the Irish Brigades in the French Army.

There is an interesting legent surrounding the famous Red Hand symbol of the O'Neill Coat of Arms. As the story goes, two chieftains were racing their boats in a bid to claim the fertile land of Ulster, for they had agreed that whomever touched shore first would claim ownership. One of them, seeing that he was about to be beaten, cut off his right hand and flung it ashore ahead of his rival. His claim to be the first to touch the shore was upheld and he was proclaimed Prince of Ulster. The Red Hand is now the symbol for the Province of Ulster and its nine counties and it is also incorporated into the coats of arms of several other septs who pledged their allegiance to the O'Neills."
