Academy in Tyringham and moved several times with her family, to Blanford
and
Becket.
She taught school for two years while still teen age. The school was a
one room
building heated by a big stove. The students were of all ages. Sometimes
in
winter after school she would go sliding on the hill with the children,
some of
whom were almost as old as she was.
Grandmother remembered living in those hill towns as a young girl, the
singing
school, square dances, Virginia reel. She remembered the work of candle
dipping, apple paring and cheese making. Neighbors often got together to
pare
bushels of apples for slicing and drying to be made into pies in the
winter. The
family made cheese to sell. Scores of round cheeses were set in the
pantry and
had to be turned every day.
From age 12 she could sew but when it was time for a wedding dress, that
was
made by a seamstress. In 1861, at age 20, she married Oliver Cushman of
Becket. Their daughter, Bertha, married Howard Johnson, son of Samuel
Johnson
of Feeding Hills. Both died of TB. Their three children lived with
Grandmother
on White St., Springfield. Helen Johnson never married but worked in
Mass.
Mutual Ins. Co and lived with Grandmother, whose care was her great
concern.
Daughter Grace married Charles Hull, Jr. of Agawam. Granmother was age 95
when she died in 1936. Parents: Calvin Morey and Harriet Tobey.

She was married to Oliver Cushman in 1861. Children were: Grace Cushman, Bertha Cushman.
