bullet Thadeus B. Bartlett(110) was born WFT Est. 1803-1832. He died WFT Est. 1857-1917. Homestead No. 28, in Southampton, (S. Wright) Thadeus B. Bartlett built a
house and barn at this site about 1866. The property was sold to Thadeus
about 1865 by Stephen Searle and he owned it until about 1883, when it
was sold to Peck and Parsons. The house and barn were one and is a
sidehill building, fronting on the Westfield road, which is on the
westerly side of them. The lower story, or basement, opens to the east,
or back side of the structure. East of the house is a driveway. Just east
of this driveway flows the stream known as the Manhan, or East Branch of
the Manhan. Up this stream from the house, just across the Southampton
road, stands a large sawmill. And across the road stands the Fomer
Schoolhouse. On the evening of Aug. 21, 1876, this sawmill was burned to
the ground. The neighbors gathered, attracted by the blaze and by great
exertions, succeeded in saving Mr. Bartlett's barn and house, and in
extinguishing the bridge in the highway just below the mill. The bridge
was blackened, somewhat, but not seriously injured. The sawmill was not
insured, but the neighboring farmers assisted Mr. Bartlett in re-building
it and it was ready for use the following year. William Graves and
perhpas others, went around the neighborhood to stir up the neighbors to
help Mr. Barltett to rebuild his sawmill, as it was almost a necessity
that they should have a sawmill in the nieghborhood, and Mr. Bartlett
would not rebuild unless the neighbors would assist him. Most of the
neighbors responsed liberally, it being understood that they were to
assist in work, not money, in most cases. Mr. S. Wright, the writer of
this article, rovided a barrel of cider to the cause, and it did much to
cheer the thirsty philanthropists in their labor of love. About 1878 a
room was partitioned off in this mill and was used as a whipshop for a
few years. Just east of this driveway flows the stream known as the
Manhan, or east branch of the Manhan river. Up this stream from the
house, just across the Southampton road, stands a large sawmill. Across
the Westfield road from this house and barn, which I shall call No. 28,
stands the Famer schoolhouse. Just below the school house on the right
side of the Westfield stands an old horse shed, on the same side of the
Road. About 1872 Allan Bartlett took possession of No. 25. Allan Bartlett
was a carpenter by trade and an unusually good sawyer. There is no farm
connected with No. 28, the sawmill and house have always gone together.
Allan C. Bartlett married Nellie C. Osborne of Westfield, Jan 8 1874.
Their children were Sadie, b 1874, and twins Grace Ellen and Gertrude
Allan, b 1876. Mrs. Nellie Bartlett died of consuption in 1878. Allan C.
Bartlett m. Victoria C. Wilby of Deerfield in 1879. Early in 1881 Mr.
Bartlett rented his sawmill to Josiah Finney of S. Deerfield and went
"back" to Brunswick, GA with his family.(Note: "back" is word used by the
author of this article, Mr. S. Wright. Southampton Vital Records show
that Allan Bartlett was born in Otis, MA.) In 1883 he sold the place to
Peck and Parsons, two enterprising lumbermen from Southampton. Allan
Bartlett died at Skylands NC in 1903.
Note: Southampton Vital Records, book from Forbes Library states that
William was born in Springfield, and was age 38 at his marriage to Hannah
Giddings, who was age 20 years. The other children of Thaddeus & Cenie
were born: Allen in Otis, Mary in Otis, and Julia in Southampton. The
Southampton death record of daughter Mary gives Thaddeus and Cenie's
birthplaces as "Both of Lonetown." (I cannot find a "Lonetown" ...must be
a small section of a larger town.)

He was married to Cenie (Sena) Clark WFT Est. 1829-1872. Children were: Allan C. Bartlett, Mary Bartlett, Celia Bartlett, Julia A. Bartlett, William Bartlett.

bullet William Bartlett(110) was born in 1854 in Springfield, MA. He died in Jul 1926 in Huntington, MA. "Homestead No 27, Southampton Homes, by S. Wright". "Going toward
Westfield from No 26, we descend a steep hill. Just at the foot of this
hill, on the right, on the westerly side of the road, stands a building
which combines under one roof a house, barn, store and blacksmith shop.
It is about 70 rods from No. 26, and was built by William Bartlett (see
page 89), son of Thadeus B. Bartlett. William Bartlett commenced this
building soon after his father left No. 25, and it was in the process of
construction and enlargment for years afterwards. The part used as a
house was constructed about 1886 and was occupied by William Torrey and
family and others, also by Mr. Bartlett, himself. Mr. Barlett was a wagon
maker, merchant and carpenter, by turns, besides doing other job work.
Alan Bartlett, brother of William helped put up the buildings in about
1879. (see page 79) William Bartlett removed to Norwich Hill from
Southampton in 1894, and married Anna Giddings in 1905. They resided on
the Giddings Place. This is a very rocky farm and the rocks that Mr.
Bartlett had blasted and laid in immense stone walls, one of them 30 feet
thick, will quite likely remain as his monuments for centuries to come.
(From Histories of Houses in Southampton," by Mr. Wright. Note: William's
birth date and place of birth given in his marriage record,Southampton
Vital records: m. 1892; age 38, born in Springfield. Parents: Thadeus B. Bartlett and Cenie (Sena) Clark .
