Earlier ancestry is obscure, but the Bate name is found in the Lydd
records as
earlyh as 1429. When and where Clement was married is not known, but five
children were baptized at Biddenen, a villatge a few miles northwest of
Lydd.
Clement with his wife Ann, five childrren and two servants, embaarked for
America on the Elizabeth Ap[ril 17 1635. He resided at Hingham on what is
now
South St. where for many years the Ancho Tavern was located.
For many years Cohasset was a part of Hingham, usually referred to as the
Second Precinct. It was incorporated in 1770. Clement Bates lived at the
villaage of Hingham, as did most of his children, but many of his
grandchildren
removed to Cohasset, where his descendants still reside.
