bullet Cornet Joseph Parsons(110) was born in 1618 in Beaminster, Dorset, England. He died on 24 Mar 1683/84 in Springfield, MA. Joseph Parsons, son of Sir Thomas Parsons, was born about 1617 in
England. His father, knighted by Charles I in 1634, lived in Great
Torrington, Devonshire, England. Joseph Parsons sailed to Boston from
Gravesend, England July 4, 1635, in the bark "Transport of London." He
was then about 18 years old, and accompanied by his brother Benjamin.
They were members of William Phychons colony of planters that settled at
Agawam, now Springfield, MA. In January, 1646 he and Thomas Merrick were
chosen surveyors in Springfield to lay out and make a certain road from
Mill River to Long Meadow. He was an assessor and selectman of
Springfield in 1652 and one of the original proprietors of Northampton,
1655. Joseph Parsons was a fur trader and bought the sole right to barter
and traffic in furs in the Connecticut Valley for an annual fee of 12
English Pounds annually. He was licensed in 1661 to keep an ordinary in
Northampton. He bought and sold land in the area and became the owner of
more land that any other person in the area. In 1663 Northampton formed a
company of cavalry which was called the Hampshire Troop.
Virkus says Joseph Parsons (1618-1683), from Eng. to Springfield MA 1634;
mem. A Co-grantee in Indian deed to Springfield, 1636, a founder of
Northampton; freeman, 1669; cornet of the horse; again settled at
Springfield, 1679 and was one of the richest men there; m Mary
(1620-1711), dau. Thomas Bliss; she was charged with witchcraft, sent to
