Vital Records
History of Genealogy of the Pomeroy Family: Daniel, a lieutenant in the colonial wars, was one of three Northampton men killed in the Battle of Lake George, 1755. His will is on file in Probate Court, Hampshire County. Notes: From the Hampshire Gazette: "Homesteads of Early Northampton", 1880: (Continued from Ebenezer and Medad Pomeroy Notes). "Come next to the successors of the third generation of this (Mansion House) homestead: Three are named by Mr. Trumbull; Daniel, Seth and John, all three military characters. Lt. Daniel, who had the Mansion and five acres (in the center of Northampton) survived his father Ebenezer on the place only a year, being one of the three Northampton men killed at Lake George in August, 1755." In early 1755, Lt. Daniel Pomeroy, in preparation for battle against the French at Lake George, and feeling in grave danger of not returning, wrote his will. To Rachel, his wife he left the "Mansion House" and all it contained, with the exception of two of the youngest horses, his clothes, guns and accrutements. His sons were to share equally in the rest and should his wife re-marry, the "Mansion House" would revert to them also. The furniture and sundry other items would go equally to his daughters. He left William a portion of his lands in Combs Mill, (Hadley) Pynchon Meadows and New Boston, as well as a share of his Town Lot and lots in the "Meadows." His son William was to share in the equal division of his personal collection of guns, armorment and clothing, and he must give his two youngest sisters a cash payment from his inheritance when they reached 18 years of age. Lieut. Daniel Pomeroy was in Colonel William's (Hatfield) Regiment, with his brother Lieutenant-Colonel, Seth Pomeroy, on an expedition against Crown Point under Sir William Johnson, and included Lt. Col Pomeroy, Major Ashley, Captain Burt, and others from Northampton area. The group stayed for two weeks at Fort Massachusetts-400 men, 30 officers and 10 companies, waiting, for they had asked for 10,000-12,000 men to be sent to them. In early September, hearing that that 8000 French & Indians were marching south, Williams and his small troop marched toward Lake George to head them off. They were ambushed. Seth Pomeroy writes: "Lake George, Sept 9 1755: Col. Williams was shot dead in a moment, and before he had time to fire his gun, Capt. Hawley was also shot mortally. My brother, Lieutenant Daniel Pomeroy, I have an account of as being well till the army retreated. He asked, "What! are we going to run?" "Yes," it was said. "Well," he replied, "I will give them one more shot before I run!" Further of him I do not hear. Our people are burying their dead now; when they return I can give a more particular account. We design to make a stand here until we have a sufficient reinforcement - " The following is a letter written by Seth Pomeroy to Rachel Pomeroy, wife of Daniel: "September 11, 1755; Dear Sister: This brings heavy tidings. But let not your heart sinque at the enws tho it be your loss of a Dear Husband. Monday the 8th instant was a memorable day, and truly you may say had not the Lord been on our side we must all been swalled up. My Brother being one that went out in the first engagement (and) after fighting a considerable time, received a fatal shot through the middle of the head. Yesterday I went out with three or four men to bury the dead and gather up what was left. We buried a hundred and thirty of our men; there is now about twenty more. Some we have buried here in the camp; one we brought in alive with the back part of his head off, and his brains naked, and set there until that time and is alive yet, but I suppose its not possible he can live. Sister, pray this awful Providence may carry to you and your children's everlasting good, and I pray God to have mercy on your poor Fatherless children, and may you have wisdom and providence to train them up in the way of Virtue and Religion, so they may be blessings in the world and may it please God to continue their lives and that we may all be put in mind of our own fraility and mortality so that we may be ready in our turn. We must in ones time be numbered with the dead. I shall take care of Brother's things if God gives opportunity. Your loving Brother, Seth Pomeroy." Parents: Ebenezer Pomeroy and Sarah King. He was married to Rachel Moseley on 4 Nov 1736 in Northampton, Ma. Long before this, that portion inherited by Captian John and his son, Captain Elisha Pomeroy, being the original homestead of Deacon Medad, passed into the possession of others. Pomeroy(110) was born on 30 May 1669
in Northampton, Ma. He died on 27 Jan 1754 in Northampton, Ma. Sheriff of
Hampshire County; Member of Royal Council. Original Letter:
Northampton, June 11 1745: from Ebenezer to Captain Seth Pomeroy: "Sir: I, your mother, relations and friends are generally well, blessed be God. We want to hear from you and the fleet and army, and a particular account of the bigness and strength of the City Louisburg, the height of the walls etc; your power and interest against scaling the walls to take the city, for I suppose that if you get inside of the city the place is not taken, for I conclude that every house is so strong that they are each, after a sort, a castle. But those things I must leave to those who are on the spot, who are the best judges, but still we want to hear of all the men of war that came from France being taken, store, ships and all; we want to hear of the City Louisburg being taken, but we desire patiently to wait God's time; but in the meantime, for your encouragment, I would inform you and your soldiers that God, in his providence, hath remarkably stirred up a spirit of prayer in this town for victory in this grand expedition, and I hear also throughout the land; for in this town the parents and some other relatives of those gone in the expedition have constantly set apart some time every week to pray to God for success in this grand affair, and we have good reason to conclude that it hath not been in vain, for God hath in a very remarkable manner smiled upon the fleet and army upon many accounts, and we really hope, and earnestly pray, that the Lord of Hosts, and God of Armies would still be on our side, and then there is no danger but your enterprise will be crowned with glory and triumph. Be much in prayer - abstain from all appearances of evil - watch particularly against those sins a soldier's life expose men unto, and above all keep always the fear of God before your eyes, and that will be a security to your living and dying. With respect to your business at home, all goes on well; your wife manages affairs with conduct and courage, and indeed your business that she was unacquainted with before you went away. The boys are industrious - the new pasture is fenced - the hay all got in well - finished yesterday. My service to the General, and to all the offices of my acquaintance, and my due regards to Commodore Warren, and my love to your soldiers, and in particular to those that went from this place. The Lord prepare and prosper you, and all with you, and return you again to your respective homes, which is the desire and prayer of Your loving father." Ebenezer Pomeroy was known by his military and civil titles: Major and Honorable. From the Gazette, Nov. 30, 1880: "Among the Ebenezers of that period, natives of the town, several of them men of note, Ebenezer Pomeroy probably for ability and capacity ranked as high as any. Born May 30 1669, he deceased 1754 in his 85th year. Contemporary with him were two other noted men, Col. John Stoddard and Col. Timothy Dwight. Major Ebenezer married his cousin Hannah Strong March 1691. She died in November of that same year. He married 2nd Sarah King, the daughter of Captain John and Sarah King, gunsmith and army commander. His daughter Sarah married Noah Wright; Thankful married Gad Lyman in 1739; late in life moved to Goshen, became the ncestors of the Lymans of that town. Major Ebenezer's sons were Daniel, Seth and John. The homestead, twice as large as Deacon Medad's, comprised twelve acres in the heart of the settlement. Ebenezer built his celebrated dwelling, remembered by not a few now, at the westerly end, a sightly spot and structure, near where the Mansion House stood. The precise date of its erection is not known. In later years, when occupied by his grandson, it went by the name Red Tavern. Major Ebenezer's public career, entered upon in early life, embraced a period of some forty years. One circumstance may be given indicating his acquaintance and connection with the legal profession. In a celebrated trial of two or more Indians for murder committed in Hadley about the year 1696, which caused much excitement in the country, Major Ebenezer Pomeroy, not then thirty years of age, acted as King's attorney; one of the jury was his father, Deacon Medad. "Ebenezer was prominent in civil and military affairs, as Captina, Major,Commissioner to meet with the Indians at Albany in 1724, member of Her Majesty's Council of the Providence, (Ann, daughter of James II) and his duties as High Sheriff were manifold. He was an active and steadfast Christian and a Deacon of the church." (Pomeroy Genealogy). In 1715 Ebenezer Pomeroy purchased of John Rust three and a half acres of landadjoining his lot on the north. This was a portion of the home lot originally purchased by Isreal Rust of John Ingersoll in 1667, and Ebenezer paid 110 pounds for it. Sometime between 1709 and 1734 Ebenezer undoubtedly build his mansion, which was afterwards known as the "Red Tavern" on the westerly portion of the old homestead. In 1634 Ebenezer, following the practice in those days, divided his real estate between his three sons, Daniel, Seth and John. To Daniel he gave five acres, together with the "Mansion" in which he(Ebenezer) now lives." To Seth he gave the house that Seth lived in, with the smith's shop, tools, barn and three acres of land. To John a house, shop and four acres of the home lot. It would seem that John had the original house and shop of his grandfather - Deacon Medad - while Seth had that formerly occupied by his father, and Daniel the house his father lived in at the time of his death. Daniel received not only his Ebenezer's own house, but the little house in which Daniel then lived. This little house was removed in later years and became part of one of the tenements between State and Masonic Streets. Lt. Daniel Pomeroy, to whom this part of the property descended, was killed at Lake George in 1755. By will Daniel divided the homestead between his two older sons, Daniel and Pliny. Pliny had the little house above mentioned and Daniel, who was well known as Major Daniel Pomeroy, had the large mansion. There was a third brother, William, who was otherwise proveded for. The portion bequeathed to Pliny, however, afterwards came into the possession of William who was a clothier and had a shop near the present site of the Edwards Church. Eltweed Pomeroy(110) was born on
4 Jul 1585 in Beaminster, Dorset, England. He died in Mar 1672/73 in Northampton,
Ma. From March 20, 1866 Hampshire Gazatte:
" Eltweed Pomeroy, who came from Devonshire, England to this country in 1630, lived at Dorchester and Windor, and died in Northampton in 1673, was the progentior of all who bear that name in the US. He is represented to have been a man of good family, tracing his pedigree back to Sir Ralph de Pomeroy, a favorite knight of William the Conquerer, whom he accompanied into England, acting a conspicuous part in the battle of Hastings, fought Oct 14, 1066 and afterwards building a castle, called Berry Pomeroy, still in preservation on the grant which he received from the crown." Eltweed Pomeroy, the third son of Richard Pomeroy and Eleanor Coker was born on July 4, 1585, in Beaminster, Dorset, England, a land of rolling hills, small villages and rich farm land in the West Country just a few years before the English defeat of the Spanish Armada. One can imagine a three-year old Eltweed sitting on his father's shoulders, cheering the British fleet as it chased the Spanish ships up the Channel. Eltweed's first wife, Joanna Keech and their two children, Dinah and Elizabeth, died prior to 1621 of the plague. He married, second, Mary Rockett at Crewkerne, County Somerset, England. Many of Mary's cousins and family came to New England during the Great Migration of the 1630's. Two of her brothers, Ships Masters out of Bridport, Dorset settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts. In February of 1630, Eltweed and his wife Mary Rockett were at the meeting of the Reverand White's group of Puritans in the "New Hospital,", Plymouth, England. It had been his intent to move to the new world, and he was a proprietor, or investor, in the venture, and for many years tradition claimed that he brought his family over at that time. However, some doubt exists; English court records show that in early 1632 an Eltweed Pomeroy, "fuller," had been called as a witness in a suit brought by tenants of Langdon Manor in Beaminster. Early Dorchester, MA records show Eltweed Pomeroy, "yeoman," in New England on March 4, 1632, when he took the oath of Freeman. It has been suggested that he came on an un-named supply ship into Boston with an inter-related group of people including Mary's brothers, Humphrey Pinny, Henry and Adams and other, all thought to be cousins and extended family of his wife. More research needs to be done in this area. This Dorchester group, gathered together by the Rev. White, was comprised of a congregation that came largely from a few clusters of towns and villages all within a days walk of Dorchester, England. From Simonsbury, an area of good dairy and cider country, came the Fords; from Marshwood Vale with its dairy pastures and old forest came Thomas Newberry. Upstream from Netherbury is Beaminster, a pretty market town known for its cloth trade, weaver's houses and fine dorset sheep. It was from Beaminster that Eltweed Pomeroy came. Roger Clapp came from nearby Crewkerne, and the Denslows from Bridport. From Dorchester came two merchants; William Hannum and Bernard Capen. Some of these men were husbandmen, some artisans. None were higher than the minor gentry. The largest group, twelve families in all, belonged to the broad class called yeomen, who lived in small, enclosed farmsteads and grew corn, reared cattle and sheep and kept dairy cows. The merchant class was also well represented by twelve families and there were an equal number of professional people; ministers, a surveyor, two schoolmasters. There were people with special skills - fullers, blacksmiths, coopers, tanners and masons; and, not surprisingly, six master mariners, including Richard and John Rocket, brothers of Eltweed's wife, Mary. In short, a complete, self-sufficient community. Eltweed moved his family from Dorchester, MA to more furtile lands in Windsor, CT. in 1635 with the Dorchester Community, led by Reverand Huit, "carrying his daughter Mary in his arms." In Stiles's "Ancient Windsor" are references to Eltweed Pomeroy. "His place in the meeting house was on the "long seats"; land was granted him in 1638; he had a house and lot in the Palisado." In 1639 his mare was taken away by the Pequot Indians and killed, and he petitioned many years for restitution. Finally, in 1661, he received Ten Pounds in Wompom from the Govenor as recompense for his loss of his mare." His wife died in 1655 and he married third Lydia Brown, widow of Thomas Parsons, who also came from Beaminster, Dorset. On March 25, 1670, Eltweed sold to Walter Fyler certain acreage at the "bottom of my meadow next to his." Aged and blind, Eltweed's son Medad brought him to Northampton in 1671, where he died March 1673. His trade was armiger and blacksmith, but he was termed "fuller" in Dorset, England, and was on a committee of two to oversee of the production of cloth in Windsor. Virkus says Eltweed Pomeroy (Pomroy, Pummery, Pumry), (1585-1673) from Eng. in the "Mary and John," to Nantasket, MA 1630; settled at Dorchester; Freeman 1632; selectman, 1633; removed to Windsor, where he received a grant of 1,000 acres, 1636; to Northampton, 1672; m 1617 Johannah Keech (d 1620) m 2d, 1629 Margery (christened Mary, but called Margery) Rockett. Parents: Richard Pomeroy and Eleanor. He was married to Johanna Keech on 4 May 1617 in Beaminster, Dorset, England. Children were: Dinah Pomeroy , Elizabeth Pomeroy.
