bullet *Austin Augustine Bearse(61) was born about 1618. He died after 1686.

He was married WFT Est. 1637-1667. From "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families", by C.F. Swift, Volume 1, 1888:

"Austin or Augustine Bearse, the ancestor of this family, came over in the ship Confidence of London, from Southampton, 24th April, 1638, and was then twenty years of age. He came to Barnstable with the first company in 1639. His house lot, containing twelve acres of very rocky land, was in the westerly part of the East Parish, and was bounded westerly by John Crocker's land, now owned by his heirs, northerly by the meadow, easterly by goodman Isaac Robinson's land, and 'southerly into ye woods.' He owned six acres of meadow adjoining his upland on the north, and two thatch islands, still known as Bearse's islands. He had also six acres of land in the Calves Pasture, esteemed to be the best soil in the town, eight acres of planting land on the north side of Shoal pond, and bounded by Goodman Cooper's, now called Huckins' Neck, and thirty acres at the Indian pond lot, bounded easterly by the Herring River, he sold to Thomas Allyn, who sold the same in 1665 to Roger Goodspeed.

He was proposed to be admitted a freeman June 3, 1652, and admitted May 3, following. His name rarely occurs in the records. He was a grand juror in 1653 and 1662, and a surveyor of highways in 1674.

He became a member of Mr. Lothrop's church, April 29, 1643. His name stands at the head of the list, he being the first named who joined after its removal to Barnstable. He appears to have been very exact in the performance of his religious duties, causing his children to be baptized on the Sabbath next following the day of their birth. His son Joseph was born on Sunday, Jan'y 25, 1651, O.S., and was carried two miles to the church and baptized the same day. Many believed in those times that children dying unbaptized were lost, and it was consequently the duty of the parent to present his child early for baptism. Goodman Bearse was influenced by this feeling; he did not wish, by a week's delay, to peril the eternal salvation of his child. Now such an act would be pronounced unnecessary and cruel....

He was one of the very few against whom no complaint was ever made; a fact which speaks well for his character as a man and a citizen. He was a farmer, lived on the produce of his land, and brought up his large family to be like himself, useful members of society. His house stood on the north side of the road, and his cellar and some remains of his orchard, existed at the commencement of the present century. I find no record of his death, or settlement of his estate on the Probate records. He was living in 1686; but died before the year 1697. A road from his house to Hyannis is still known as Bearse's Way. His grandsons settled early at Hyannis. John Jenkins and John Dexter afterwards owned the ancient homestead. The planting lands at Shoal Pond were occupied by his descendants till recently.

The marriage of Goodman Austin Bearse is not on record [see following article].

'Austin Bearse and his Alleged Indian Connections'

Austin Bearse was married by Indian rites at the Mattachee Indian Village to Mary, daughter of John Hyanno, a Mattachee Sagamore, and son of Sachem [Chief] Ihyannough, who befriended the Pilgrims upon their arrival. Austin Bearse was said to be of Romany or Gypsy race and the name was originally Be Arce. He belonged to a family of Continental gypsies who emigrated from England. There was great persecution; for some infraction of English law, Austin was deported to the English Colonies. On arriving at Plymouth, Austin was the only prisoner allotted to Barnstable. No Puritan girl at that time would marry a gypsy, as there were eligible Puritans to select from. It was therefore natural that he should marry an Indian Princess. Facts supposedly taken from the original diary of Zervia Newcomb, who married Josiah Bearse, a grandson of Austin and who wrote from personal knowledge of the facts appear in her artical, 'A True Chronical of the Bearse Family.' (From this artical it appears that Austin Bearse married Mary Hyanno (b. 1625) in 1639.

Continuing in the same article, Donald Lines Jacobus, M.A., of New Haven, Conn., refutes the claims concerning Austin's ancestry and Indian Marriage:

What we know of him:

Augustine Bearse, age 20, sailed on the "Confidence" in April, 1638. There is no evidence that he was a deported criminal as most of the passengers came as family groups. Augustine is a Christian name in good usage in England. ... The wife of 'Brother Berce' joined the church 7 Aug. 1650" Children were: Mary Bearse, Martha Bearse, Priscilla Bearse, *Sarah Bearse, Abigail Bearse, Hannah Bearse, Joseph Bearse, Hester Bearse, Lydia Bearse, Rebecca Bearse, James Bearse.

bullet *Sarah Bearse(61) was born on 28 Mar 1646 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. She died before 1718. Parents: *Austin Augustine Bearse.

She was married to *John Hamblen in Aug 1667. From "The Doane, Emmons, Lindner, Roney, and Stout Families", by Robert Harold Lindner, 1986, page 80:

"John Hamblen and his family resided at Hamblen's Plain, West Barnstable, Mass. He was a farmer. His wife, Sara Bearse, was an early member of the church, but John did not join until late in life.

The following information concerning John Hamblen came from "Barnstable Families", Vol. I:

"John Hamblen, Sr., died in 1718, aged 73 years. In his will dated Jan. 3, 1714, proved March 8, 1717-18, he gives to his son, John, one-half of his tenement at Indian Pond, one-half of his dwelling house and barn and one-half of his lands, and to son Benjamin, the other half, and to his son, Ebenezer, his tenement at Cooper's Pond, and the lands adjacent. It appears that he had a large landed estate and that he owned three houses and tenements. That at the Indian Pond he did not occupy himself. The dwelling house which he occupied was farther north on the 'Plain'. His personal estate was appraised at L168,0,8. He names his nine daughters and three sons. Since his daughter Thankful had died in 1683, it seems that he had another younger than Benjamin not named in the record."
