*Catherine
Rutsen(61) was born before 14 Oct
1676 in New York, New York.(22145)
She died WFT Est. 1719-1771. Parents: *Jacob Rutsen
and *Marytie Hansen Bergen. She was married
to *Major Johannes Hardenbergh on 5 Dec 1699 in
Kingston, New York.(10749) From "Genealogical
and Family History of Southern New York and the Hudson River Valley", 1913,
Vol III, page 1040:
"Johannes, eldest son of Gerrit Janse and Jaepie (Schepmoes) Hardenbergh,
was born about 1670, at Albany, and appears on record, January 2, 1689, as the
purchaser of a lot from the trustees of the town 'on the corner of the street
opposite the house and barn of Corneis Masten' in the village of Kingston, Ulster
county, New York. He was commissioned July 30, 1690, as high sheriff of that
county by Governor Leisler, and in the political controversies during the administration
of that governor he was staunchly loyal to him. In 1709 he was again appointed
high sheriff of Ulster county by Governor Lovelace, and was a trustee of the
town of Kingston in 1707-09-12. In 1728 he was major of the Ulster county militia
under Colonel Jacob Rutsen, and was later colonel of the same regiment, but was
almost universally designated Major Johannes Hardenbergh. In the general assembly
of the state, July 15, 1737, he was a delegate from Ulster county and seems to
have held the respect and confidence of his contemporaries for more than half
a century. He was intimately associated with public affairs and his renown as
a public official is eclipsed by his fame as the principal proprietor of the
Great or Hardenbergh Patent. This is said to have covered about two million
acres of land in the counties of Greene, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan and Delaware,
and was purchased from the Indians in 1706, being confirmed by royal grant from
Queen Anne, April 23, 1708, to Johannes Hardenbergh and several associates.
A general survey of the tract was begun in 1749 and created such dissatisfaction
among the Indians that Hardenbergh entered into negotiations with them by which
they conveyed to him by written deed the portion of land in dispute for the sum
of one hundred and forty-nine pounds and nineteen shillings, the equivalence
of seven hundred and fifty-three dollars. This grant continued, however, to
create controversy and bitterness. One of the townships in Ulster county commemorates
the Hardenbergh proprietorship by bearing his name.
He married (first) July 10, 1696, Hillegonde Myers, a young woman from New York,
probably the daughter of Andries and Vrountje (Van Vorst) Myers, as they are
on records as sponsors at the baptism of the only child of this marriage, a daughter
Katherine, baptized October 4, 1697, and died previous to October, 1708. The
mother died previous to September 1698, and he married (second) December 5, 1699,
by license granted September 12, 1698, Catherine Rutsen. Children: Gerardus
and Jacobus, twins, the second died young; Marrytie, Jacoba, Johannes, Catherine,
Rutse, Abraham."

From "History of New Paltz", by Ralph LeFevre:
"The Hardenbergh family has been one of the most respected and influential
in Ulster County, its members occupying positions of trust and responsibility
in church and state, in peace and war. Of late years there have been comparatively
few of the name in Ulster County.
Dr. Corwin in his last edition of 'The Manuel of the Reformed Church' says:
Sir Johannes (Hardenberg) was knighted by Queen Anne at the recommendation of
the Duke of Marlborough for gallantry at the decisive battle of Blenheim. With
the order of Knighthood he also received the patent which bears his name and
which comprised a considerable portion of what now constitutes the counties of
Ulster, Delaware and Sullivan in the state of New York.
In signing his name, Johannes Hardenbergh sometimes simply signed 'Hardenberg'
as was the custom with those in England who held titles.
The Hardenbergh family is of German origin and the ruins of the Hardenbergh castle
are still pointed out near Nordheim, in Germany. Gerrit Jans Hardenbergh, the
progenitor of the family in Ulster county, came to America with his father from
Maarden, near Utrecht, in the Netherlands.... Their son Johannes became an owner
of real estate in the village of Kingston in 1689, was commissioned high sheriff
of Ulster county by Gov. Leisler in 1690, and again by Gov. Lovelace in 1709.
He was commissioned as major in the Ulster county regiment in 1728, and was
afterwards a colonel in the same regiment. He was one of the patentees in the
great or Hardenbergh Patent, by which an immense tract, estimated at 2,000,000
acres in the present counties of Ulster, Orange, Greene, Delaware and Sullivan
was granted by Queen Ann in 1708. There was considerable dissatisfaction among
the Indians for a long term of years at the granting of so large a tract, but
they became satisfied on the payment of an additional sum.
By his wife, Catharine Rutzen, he had a large family of sons and daughters.
Two of the sons married New Paltz women and settled within the bounds of the
New Paltz congregation, although but one of them, Abraham, lived in the New Paltz
precinct, his home being at Guilford. The brother Johannes lived at what is now
Rosendale village. Other members of the family located elsewhere...."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller, 1958:
"Will of Johannes Hardenbergh of Kingston, Ulster County, Gent., being sick.
Dated 17 April 1745. On file at office of the Surrogate, New York. (Liber 16,339
Ulster Probate Records, in part): 'My executors are to sell all real estate,
the proceeds to be put out at interest for the use of my wife Catharina; after
her decease ... all my estate to my children, Gerardus, Johanes, Abraham, Leonard,
Jacob, Maritje (wife of Charles Brodhead), Jacobs (widow of Edward Whitaker,
Jr., Esq. deceased) ... I make my wife and sons Johanes and Abraham, and son-in-law
Charles Brodhead, executors. Witnesses, Anthony Sleeght, Adam Person, Jan Eltinge.
Proved before John Crooks, Esq., Oct. 15, 1748." (p 27)
"The Great or Hardenbergh Patent consisted of approximately two million
acres of land situated in Ulster, Greene, Orange, Sullivan and Delaware Counties,
New York. On the 22d of March 1707, Johannes Hardenbergh, then a merchant in
the Esopus (Kingston), purchased from the Nanisinos an immense tract of land,
paying for it the sum of sixty pounds current money of New York, the deed being
signed by the above named Indian and witnessed. In April 1708 this transaction
was confirmed by royal grant under Queen Anne. Leonard Lewis, Philip Rokeby,
William Nottingham, Benjamin Fanieul, Peter Falconier, and Robert Lurting were
joint owners with Johannes Hardenbergh. Later an eight interest was released
to Augustine Graham. This tract was bounded 'on the East by the watershed between
the Hudson and the Delaware rivers; on the Northeast by a line drawn from the
lakes in Pine Orchard to the head of the Delaware River; on the Northwest by
Lake Utsayantha; on the West by the Delaware river; on the South by a line leaving
the Delaware river about twelve miles from north of Port Jervis and reaching
the watershed by courses 45 degrees East and North 53 degrees E." (p. 29)

*Jacob
Rutsen(61) was born about 1650 in
Albany, New York.(22146) He died before
22 Apr 1729 in Rosendale, Ulster County, New York.
(22147) Parents: *Rutger Jacobse VanSchoonderwoert
and *Tryntie Janse Breestede. He was married
to *Marytie Hansen Bergen in 1675. From "The
Early History of Kingston & Ulster County", by Marc Fried:
"The identity of the original Kerhonkson Kill, however, is established conclusively
by a map drawn in 1713, showing the land of Jacob Rutsen lying along the Rondout
Creek, west of the mouth of the Kerhonkson. This parcel on the north side of
the Rondout, was named 'Blumardale' or 'Bloomendale' (Flower Valley), and was
patented by Rutsen in 1686. [Ulster County Abstracts, A3172, p. 47]" (p.
76)
"It may be that the name Kerhonkson, as used in the Andros Treaty, designated
a stream entering the Esopus Creek somewhere north of Kingston. Subsequent to
this treaty, however, the name appears primarily in connection with the Jacob
Rutsen tract in the vicinity of the present village of Kerhonkson. On April
18, 1683, Rutsen bought from Kentkamin and Harmon Hekan, Esopus Indians, a parcel
of thirty morgen (sixty acres) of land, 'situated at Kahakasins, being the first
land at said Kahankisins [sic].' Rutsen was granted, in addition, 'the woodland
to match (naar advenant) the third acres [sic for 'morgen'] of arable land,'
elsewhere described as 'ye wood land in proportion of ye thirty morgan.' Later,
Rutsen requested a patent for this land. His land was surveyed in 1685 and patented
the following year. The survey description and the map mentioned earlier confirm
the location of the Kerhonkson Kill in this vicinity.
Only in the survey description, patent, and map may Rutsen's land be clearly
located on the north side of the Rondout Creek, west from the mouth of the Kerhonkson
Kill. This is the tract bearing the Dutch name Bloomendale (doubtless given
by Rutsen), and was 300 acres in extent. About one-third to one-half of this
parcel consists of river lowlands; the remainder is hilly. The Indian deed of
1683 and the request for a patent refer only to 30 morgens (60 acres) of arable
land, with an unspecified acreage of woodland, 'situated at Kahakasins.' Although
it cannot actually be proved that the patent for Bloomendale covered the same
plot of land mentioned in the earlier Indian deed, it is very probably that such
was the case. Presumably, only about 60 acres of the river lowlands was already
cleared, arable land, and the remaining 240 acres constituted the woodland that
was granted to Rutsen in the Indian deed. There is no record of a separate survey
or patent for the 60-acre tract, nor is there any record of the 300 acres called
Bloomendale antedating the survey description and patent previously cited. It
must be concluded that the 300 acres on the north side of the Rondout, lying
west and southwest of the Kerhonkson Kill, was the same land purchased from the
Esopus Indians in 1683. If this Kerhonkson Kill is the one chosen as the northeast
bounds of the lands covered by the Nicolls Treaty, then there is an obvious problem:
Rutsen's land clearly would be a part of the tract sold by the Esopus Indians
to Governor Nicolls, and it should not have been necessary to pay the Indians
once more for the land...." (pp. 81-82)

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:
"Jacob Rutsen, son of Rutger Jacobse and Tryntje Jans Breestede was born
about 1650 in Albany, died 1730 at Rosendale, New York, married 1675 Maria Hansen
Bergen who was baptized 10/8/1651 in New Amsterdam, daughter of Hans Hansen Bergen
and Sarah Rapelle.
Jacob Rutsen first appears on record at the baptism of a child at New Amsterdam,
Oct. 14, 1676, and at Kingston, Nov. 17, 1678 for baptism of Sara. He obtained
a patent of land near Kingston, August 26, 1677, for an annual quit rent of five
bushels of wheat; another grant Oct. 8, 1677, for one bushel of wheat quit rent
annually. About 1670 he moved to Kingston. In 1680 he purchased from the Indians
a tract of land in the Town of Rosendale which he leased to Dirck Keyser on condition
Keyser erect a stone house thereon. On May 28, 1685, a tract of 983 acres lying
on the south side of the Rondout Kill and known by the name of Roasindale, was
laid out for Jacob Rutsen. On Oct. 21, 1683, he received from the Town of Hurley
a deed for 600 acres located apparently to the south and east of his other tract.
In 1695 he bought of Peter Schuyler for seventy pounds 'one third of a tract
of land called Wawarsing,' the remaining two thirds being owned by Jan Bleecker,
his uncle, and Jochem Statts. On June 25, 1712, there is on record a petition
of Jacob Rutsen of Ulster County for 2000 acres 'near the land of which he is
already possessed,' that is, near Guilford. This tract was called by the Indians
'Nescatock,' later known as Guilford, and later came into the Possession of Abraham
Hardenbergh. On June 5, 1712, a petition was filed by John Rutsen, J. Bruin
of Ulster County on behald of themselves and Company, for 3000 acres of the Evans
tract 'contiguous to their lands in Shawangunk.' Eldredge-Dutcher says that
Jacob Rutsen and his son-in-law, Johannes Hardenbergh, possessed a domain greater
than many a Grand Duchy in Germany. Mrs. Ross Osterhoudt, Stone Ridge, New York,
has the original inventory of Jacob Rutsen. The document is dated April 22,
1729 has eight pages folded in booklet form crosswise. He is listed as having
fourteen slaves.
In 1692, 1693, 1699, 1700 Jacob Rutsen represented Ulster and Dutchess counties
in the Colonial Assembly of New York, and Ulster County 1714-1715. In 1700
he was field officer of the Ulster County Militia with a regiment of 325 men,
with rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel 1710-1728. On August 30, 1685 he was
ensign in a Ffoote Company for New Paltz.
