bullet *Jaepie "Jacoba" Schepmoes(61) was born before 6 Jan 1646/47 in New Amersterdam (now New York City). (22424) She died on 29 Nov 1732 in New York, New York. (22425) Parents: *Jan Jansen Schepmoes and *Sara Pieterse Van Naerdan.

She was married to *Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh about 1666. From "The History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1888:

"One branch of the Hardenbergh family descended from Gerrit Hardenbergh, a resident of Albany, whose wife was Jaepje Schepmoes. Their son, Johannes Hardenbergh, moved to Kingston, where he married Catharine, daughter of Jacob Rutsen and Maria Hansen. He was one of the original patentees of the Great or Hardenbergh Patent. He left several children; one was Johannes and another Leonard. The descendants of this branch of the family are very numerous.

There was another Johannes Hardenbergh, who came from Holland about 1660 and settled in Ulster County. The writer cannot give any particulars in regard to his descendants."

From "Genealogical and Family History of Southern New York and the Hudson River Valley", Vol III, 1913, p1039:

"The name Hardenbergh in its Dutch form is Hardenberg, the terminative 'h' having been added to the word by the descendants of the pioneer settler in America of that name. The annals of the ancestry of the Hardenberg family reach back into the twelfth century, stretching in an unbroken line more than seven hundred years to 1174, when the old Castle Hardenberg in the Harz Mountains, Germany, was the abode of Dietrick von Hardenberg, the supposed founder of the family. In that year the castle was erected, and was owned by the consent of Mainz. It was guarded by men at arms, and dietrick von Hardenberg was a trusted warden. In the fourteenth century, on account of a heavy debt owed to them by the convent, the castle passed into the possession of the Hardenbergs, who since its erection had been wardens. This castle was the residence of Karl August, Prince of Hardenberg, who died at Genoa, November 26, 1822. He was one of the most illustrious statesmen of Prussia. He filled various positions of dignity and power. He was entrusted with the will of Frederick the Great, to be delivered to Frederick William II of Prussia.... Frederick von Hardenberg (1772-1801) was an eminent German poet and philosopher.

The Westphalian branch of the Hardenberg family at an early day became planted in Holland, leaving there many of their name, also the town of 'Hardenberg' on the river Vechte. In 1644 Arnoldus Van Hardenberg, a merchant from Amsterdam, Holland, came to America. He was born in Holland and in 1649 was one of the council of the director-general of the New Netherlands, but he returned to Holland ten years later.

(I) Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh first appears on record in 1667, at Albany, New York, when he was the purchaser of goods at an auction. He was the son of Jan Van Hardenberg, who arrived at New Amsterdam (now New York) before 1644, and who died in New Amsterdam about 1659, leaving issue still in their minority though unnamed. Ten of twelve years after his death a young man, Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh, married a young woman of New Amsterdam, born in 1647, daughter of Jan Jansen Schepmoes, a near neighbor. He purchased a lot on Chapel street and Maiden Lane in Albany, in 1669, and three years later another lot on Maiden Lane between North Pearl and Chapel streets. Four years later he purchased a third lot on State street between North Pearl and Chapel streets. He had children baptized in Albany in 1683, but three years later he pur and his wife appear as residents of New York City in a list of members of the Reformed Church of New York made by Rev. Henricus Selyns. They were then represented as dwelling in a house on Pearl street between State and Whitehall streets. He was the owner and commander of a sloop, known as the 'Royal Albany', which plied the Hudson river between New York and Albany. He was commissioned by Governor Jacob Leisler, May 19, 1690, to war against the French in Canada, with the title of captain. He was living in 1696 which is the last ddate found referring to him. He seems to have been a quiet, law-abiding, God-fearing citizen, taking little part in public affairs and having no business other than the care and management of his sloop. He married after coming to America, probably about 1666, Jaepie or Jobje Schepmoes, and in 1678 they made a joint will mentioning children but not by name. They had children: Elizabeth, Johannes, Sara, Mary, Neeltje, Rachel, Cornelius, Barendence. The mother was baptized at New Amsterdam, January 6, 1647. Her baptismal name written Jobjie on the church register , was perpetuated among her descendants in the form of Jacoba. She was the daughter of Jan Jansen Schepmoes and Sara Pietersen, who came from Holland to Beaverwyck (now Albany), as early as 1638."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller, 1958:

"Gerrit Jansz van Hardenbergh was a native of Maarsen in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. This follows from his will made in 1678 in which he makes this statement. (The will is found in Early Rec. Albany, 1918, Not. Papers, vol 3, 466). The statement that he came with his father from Maarden is not correct. Maarden suggests Naarden a town also in the vicinity, and there is no evidence that his father ever came to this country. Maarsen is a small town near the city of Utrecht. In 1632 it had 474 inhabitants and fortunately the church registers of the period have been preserved. The records of the Dutch Ref. Church of Maarsen disclosed the fact that on Feb. 17, 1639, Gerrit was baptised as son of Jan Jacobsz (van) Hardenberch, name of mother not given. Gerrit Jansz Hardenbergh appeared for the first time in the records of Albany in 1663 and signed his name Gerrit van Herttenberc. (Early Rec Alb. 3:238) In documents quoted in Early Rec of Albany 3:287,431 he signed Gerrit Jansz Herttenbergh....

In 1690 Gerrit was the owner and captain of the sloop 'The Royal Albany,' and received on July 3, 1690 a commission to act against the French. A few months later, on Sept. 22, 1690, he was appointed a member of a committee to take inventory and made appraisal of the cargoes of certain vessels at New York.

He and his wife are mentioned in Kingston in 1700 as sponsors at the baptism of a child of their son Johannes, and Jaepie Hardenbergh is in 1714 a sponsor at the baptism of a grandchild. On December 24, 1678 Gerrit Hardenbergh of Albany and wife Jaepie Schepmoes made a joint will, written in Dutch, at 4 P.M., in which their children are mentioned, but not by name.

At a public auction of the estate of the late Rutger Jansen van Schoenderwoert he bought on Apr. 8, 1667 'three old shirts and a valance'. He had many real estate transactions.... Most of his children at their marriage were said to be living in New York." Children were: Elizabeth Hardenbergh, *Major Johannes Hardenbergh, Sara Hardenbergh, Mary Hardenbergh, Neeltje Hardenbergh, Rachel Hardenbergh, Cornelia Hardenbergh, Barendina Hardenbergh .

bullet *Jan Huygensz Schepmoes(61) died on 25 Sep 1576 in Delft, Holland. He was born WFT Est. 1477-1530.

He was married WFT Est. 1501-1562. From "The Hardenbergh Family", Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"The family of Schepmoes lived originally in Delft, Netherlands. The origin of the name is uncertain but as is the case with many Dutch surnames it may be traced to the name of the house in which the family lived at one time. The house in (in the sign of) 't Schepmoes, (also written Schepmes) was situated next to the New Church at Delft (bezijden de nieuwe Kerck). The name is made up of two words, 'schep' from scheppen, which may be translated to mean to ladle, and 'moes' which means either a sauce or stew (the Dutch for applesauce is appelmoes). Schepmoes may have been an old-time name for a dish of sauce or stew to which one could help himself by means of a ladle.

The oldest ancestor known at present is Jan Huygensz (Schepmoes) who died 9/25/1576. Member of church at Delft 2/25/1574 listed as Jan Juygensz, schoenmaecker (shoe-maker) in 't Schepmoes. (Nederl. Leeuw, 1917:81) Children were: *Pieter Jansz Schepmoes, Huyck Jansz Schepmoes .

bullet *Jan Jansen Schepmoes(61) was born in 1605 in Delft, Holland. He died in 1655 in New Amersterdam (now New York City). Parents: *Jan Pietersz Schepmoes.

He was married to *Sara Pieterse Van Naerdan on 16 Feb 1641/42 in New Amersterdam (now New York City). From "The History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1888:

"Jan Jansen Schepmoes was in New Amsterdam as early as 1638. He died in 1655. By his wife, Sarah Pietersen, he had eight children. His son, Dirck Janse Schepmoes, moved to Esopus. He married Maria Willems. After her death, on the 28th of September, 1703, he married Margrietje, daughter of Jurian Teunisse Tappen. He left several daughters, but only one son, Johannes, who was the issue of the first marriage, and is the progenitor of the Schepmoes family of Kingston."

From "The Early History of Kingston & Ulster County", by Marc Fried:

"[Thomas] Chambers first appears on record in New Netherland on May 6, 1642, on which day, at Fort Amsterdam, he contracted to build a house for Jan Jansen Schepmoes and cover it with 500 clapboards."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"Jan Jansz Schepmoes married 12/27/1631 at Amsterdam (Holland). Mariner.

Jan came to Beaverwyck from Delft, Holland, in 1638. Some records say he came with his wife, another record is that she was married in New York. From Beaverwyck he went to New Amsterdam, probably due to the fact that Peter Minuit wanted to clear the uplands for agriculture. Her he purchased lots on May 18, 1643, July 6, 1643, Sept. 8, 1644, and resided on Pearl Street. He seems to have been a carpenter or builder as their is a record of his contracting with Thomas Chambers, a prominent man of Kingston, to build a house from materials furnished by Chambers for 116 guilders.

From Court Minutes of New Amsterdam is found these records: 10/20/1653 Jan Schepmoes v/s Dirck van Nes. Defendant in default. Jan Schepmoes, Jan Jansen, cooper, Coenradt Ten Eyck, prominent burghers. Willem Petersen v/s Jan Jansen Schepmoes, question of security for f1.45. (Fernow VI, 123, 126, 268).

Sarah Pietersen, widow of Schepmoes, deceased, v/s Dirck de Noormal Will: Koeck, husband appears in court, plaintiff being sick, exhibiting account book whereby f1.22.16 are owing to plaintiff, 1/8/1657. Sara Pietersen v/s Abram Roeloffsen, defendant in default. Sara Pietersen v/s Adrian Keyser, demands f1.60, 3/6/1656. 3/26/1656 Whereas Sara Schepmoes widow of Jan Schepmoes, deceased, claims the ownership of the Bell on the City Hall, which is used by the Court, and has exhibited proof to that effect, Secy Kip was directed to pay petitioner f1.10 for the bell out of the burgher excise. Sara Pieters requests restitution of obligations in Willem Pietersen's signed by her deceased husband, as same is paid 11/25/1659. (Fernow V2, 257, 58, 78, 82)

Sara Pietersen may have been a sister of Giles and Cornelis Pietersen, both of whom lived near Schepmoes. Anjou V1:42 records 'Letters of Administration granted to the children of Jan Jansen Schepmoes who married in New York, Sara Pieters, who after his death married 10/7/1656 Willem Tomasse Couch, or Cock (Koech) of England.' Also names Joeptie as their fourth child."
