bullet *Hendrick Jochemse Schoonmaker(61) was born about 1630 in Hanse Town, near Hamburg, Germany. (22580) He died about 1681 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. (22581)

He was married to *Elsie Janse Breestede in 1657 in Albany, New York. (3097) From "The History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1881:

"Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker was a native of Hamburg, in Germany. The precise time of his arrival in this country is not known, but he came in the military service of the Dutch West India Company, and was lieutenant 'in the company of his noble Honor the Director General.' It is certain that he was there as early as the year 1654, for there is a record of his advance of money in that year to Governor Stuyvesant 'in time of need'. He was an innholder at Fort Orange, and acquired the title to considerable real estate. He owned, besides other lots, a lot on the east corner of what is now Broadway and State Street. In the fall of 1659 his company was ordered to Esopus for the defence of the settlers in their troubles with the Indians. He was there in 1660, and at the expiration of his enlistment he settled at Esopus. A short time afterward, in 1662, when the burghers organized a company of militia at Esopus, he was appointed lieutenant under Thomas Chambers as captain.

Hendrick Jochemsen married Elsie Janse, daughter of Jan Janse Breestede and widow of Adriaen Petersen Van Alcmaer. He died about 1681, and his widow, September 26th, 1684, married Cornelis Barentsen Slecht.
Hendrick left four children, Jochem Hendrick, Egbert, Engetje, and Hillitje."

From "Scandinavian Immigrants in New York", by John O. Evjen, 1972, page 212 (from the chapter on Danish immigrants):

"Elsje Jans, from 'Breestede' (Bredstedt), a daughter of Jans Jansen and Engeltje Jan van Breestede, came with her parents to New Netherland in 1636. She was married, on May 17, 1643, to Adriaen Pietersen van Alcmar, widower of Grietje Pietersen.

The Council minutes of that period tell us how Adriaen wooed and won her as his wife. It appears that Elsje was in the service of Cornelis Melyn of Staten Island. She left the service before her term had expired, in order to marry Adriaen. Melyn was much displeased at this, and brought suit against Egbert Woutersen, her stepfather, 'husband and guardian of Engel Jan, her mother', for damages on account of Elsje's marriage engagement.

Elsje appeared in court on September 11, 1642, and testified that 'her mother and another woman had brought a young man to Staten Island.' She claimed she had never seen him before. They desired that she should marry him. She declined at first, but finally consented. 'She concluded her testimony by returning in court the pocket-handkerchief she had received as a marriage present.'

Five days later she made the declaration that she sent for Adriaen Pietersen, and that on his coming to Staten Island she accompanied him on board his yawl.

A week later, Melyn and the Fiscal had Pietersen before the court, charged with Elsje's abduction. Pieterson was ordered to bring her into court, deliver her to Melyn, and receive her again from him 'on giving security for the payment of the damage Melyn may have suffered.' [New York G&B Record, VII, p.117]

After the death of Adriaen Pietersen, Elsje married Hendricksen Jochemsen, of Esopus. After his death she married Cornelis Barentsen Slecht (Sleght), who was in New Amsterdam in 1662, and at Wiltwyck (Esopus) in 1664."

From "The Early History of Kingston & Ulster County", by Marc Fried:

"On Thursday, June 7, 1663, between eleven and twelve o'clock, when nearly all the men were at work in the fields, a large number of Indians began entering Wildwyck from different points, in bands, dispersing among the dwellings in a seemingly friendly manner, under pretense of bartering a little maize and some beans. The visitors had been in Wildwyck about a quarter of an hour when some people on horseback rushed through the mill gate crying out 'The Indians have destroyed the New Village!'. The Indians at Wildwyck then commenced a general attack on the bewildered inhabitants, murdering them in their houses with axes and tomahawks and firing on them with guns.... In the meantime, the New Village had suffered a similar fate. The entire settlement was burned to the ground, except for a new unroofed barn, a rick, and a small stack of reed. Here, according to the official report, there were three men killed. There were no wounded, but a man and thirty-four women and children were carried off by the Indians. In Wildwyck twelve men (including three soldiers), four women, and two children were reported dead, with ten women and children taken prisoner. Eight men were injured, one of whom died nine days later of his wounds. Twelve houses were burned. Hendrick Jochemsen (Schoonmaker) was 'very severely wounded in his house [in Wildwyck] by two shots at an early hour.' A child of Schoonmaker was among those taken prisoner from the New Village. Also taken captive from the New Village were the wife and three children of Lambert Huybertsen (Brink), two children of Albert Heymans Roosa, the wife and child of Antoine Crispell, and the wife and three children of Louis DuBois...." From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker was born at Hanse Town, near Hamburg, Germany. He died about 1681 at Kingston, married at Albany ca 1657/8 Elsie Janse Van Breestede of New Amsterdam, daughter of Jan Janse Breestede and Engeltje Jans, and widow of Adriaen Pieterszen Van Alcmaer by whom she had three children ( 5/17/1643) She married (3) Cornelis Barentsen Slecht.

Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker came to New York in 1654 in the military service of the Dutch West India Company. He settled at Albany prior to 1655 and kept an inn there. Schoonmaker purchased considerable property and loaned money to Governor Stuyvesant 'in time of need.' He had lot No. 1 at Wiltwyck, and was a member of the Citizens Council of War in that village, and a signer of the ordinance drawn up on the first day of January Anno 1663, with Thomas Chambers, Cornelis Barentsen Slecht, and Pieter Jacobsen. He was Lieutenant of Militia stationed at Esopus 1660 with his company and settled there at the expiration of his term of enlistment. At the time of the burning of Wiltwyck by the Indians June 7, 1663, he was severly wounded and one of his children was captured. At that time he lived near the Mill Gate. His commission was renewed April 18, 1670.

Hendrick was called 'Hendrick the smith.' On official papers he signed his name Hendrick Jochemsen. Court records of Kingston say 'he was recently deceased Nov. 7, 1682.' The descendants of Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker are quite numerous in Ulster County, New York, and are widely scattered. Their children seem to have settled in Rochester, Ulster County; all had large families. They had sixteen children.

Their first child Jochem Hendrickse married 1679 Petronella Slecht."

bullet *Jochem Hendrick Schoonmaker(61) was born about 1660 in Albany, New York. He died after 9 Dec 1729 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York.(22582) Parents: *Hendrick Jochemse Schoonmaker and *Elsie Janse Breestede.

He was married to *Petronella Slecht on 16 Aug 1679.(22583) From "The History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1881:

"The oldest son, Jochem Hendrick, who was born at Albany, married, August 1st, 1679, Petronella, daughter of Cornelis Barentsen Slecht and Tryntje Tysse Boz. After her death on the 28th of April, 1689, he married Anna, daughter of Frederick and Margaret Hussey. He was one of the pioneer settlers at Mumbaccus and one of three original trustees named in the Rochester Patent granted by Queen Anne in 1703. He continued as trustee by annual election until 1713. He was supervisor of the town from 1709 to 1712, and was captain of a company raised for defence against the Indians. He died in 1713 and left fourteen children."

From "Pioneer Families of Orange County, New York" by Martha & Bill Reamy:

"Jochem's residence is given as Kingston in his will dated 9 Dec. 1729." (This disagrees with Marius Schoonmaker's information, but appears to be more factual.)

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"Jochem Hendrickse Schoonmaker, born circa 1659 at Albany, son of Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker and Elsie Janse Van Breestede, died 1730 or 1743, married (1) 8/1/1679 Petronella Slecht who died 1687, daughter Cornelis Slecht and Tryntje Tysse Boz.

Jochem Schoonmaker was a pioneer settler at Mombaccus, Town of Rochester, Ulster County, New York, coming there in 1683 with two brothers. He operated a saw mill. His will written in Dutch, Dec. 9, 1729 was proved 11/7/1730.

At the age of four Jochem was visiting an uncle at Hurley when he was captured by the Indians on occasion of their attack on Kingston, June 1663. He was kept until autumn, and it is said he bore scars from burns caused by coals being thrown on his head by the Indians.

Jochem was a member of the first board of trustees in the Town of Rochester 1703-1715, and supervisor 1709-1712. He was Captain of a company raised for defense against the Indian attacks.

The Schoonmaker family of Rochester has been one of influence in civil affairs and in military affairs of the county. The family as a whole is well-to-do. So numerous have been the inter-marriages during the generations that a large proportion of the population of Ulster County possess Schoonmaker blood. He married (2) 4/28/1689 Anne Horsi or Hussey, who was baptised at Kingston 6/27/1670, daughter of Frederick and Margaret.

Jochem Schoonmaker had seventeen children." Children were: Hendrick Schoonmaker, Cornelius Schoonmaker , *Tryntje Schoonmaker, Elsie Schoonmaker, Jacomyntje Schoonmaker .

He was married to Anna Hussey on 28 Apr 1689 in New York. She was married to *Jacobus Bruyn on 18 Nov 1704 in Kingston, New York.(3472) From "The History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1888:

"The Bruyn family is descended from Jacobus Bruyn, who emigrated to this country from Norway about the year 1660. He married Gertruyde Ysselstein, of Columbia County, a lady of German origin, and afterward removed to Shawangunk, Ulster County.

Their youngest son, Jacobus, on the 18th of November 1704, married Tryntje, daughter of Jochem Hendrick Schoonmaker and Petronella Slecht.

Their son, Sovereign Bruyn, born May 25th, 1726, married Catharine, daughter of Johannes Ten Broeck and Rachel Roosa.

Their son, Jacobus S., born in 1751, was lieutenant-colonel in the Continental line, and resided in North Front Street, Kingston."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenberg Miller:

"Jacobus Bruyn and Tryntje Schoonmaker ... lived on the Lloyd Patent at Bruynswick, Town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York. This patent was inherited from Severyn Ten Hout, his step-father. The large two-story house of stone which he built on the west side of the Shawangunk kill in 1724, and long a landmark, burned in 1875. Jacobus Bruyn was a large land owner and a man of wealth.... Tryntje was a motherly woman; of middle stature, well proportioned, in her youth a beautiful woman. In latter days she was weak and feeble. She is buried beside two of her grandchildren. This description of Tryntje was taken from Abraham Hasbrouck's diary.

On November 14, 1709, Jacob Bruyn and Benjamin Smedes petitioned for and presented a survey for a track of 400 acres in Shawangunk 'near a small hill, in ye Indian tongue 'Wecbque-atenn-enck.''. This was a part of the Evans patent. On June 5, 1712, John Rutsen and Jacob Bruin of Ulster County, petitioned on behalf of themselves and Company for 3000 acres of the Evans patent, 'contiguous to their improved lands.' This was in Shawangunk, and was surveyed June 13, 1712. On November 26, 1719 Jacobus Bruyn petitioned for a patent for two parcels of land near the Shawangunk creek, being a part of the Evans patent, 500 acres. More of his holdings are listed in his will.

Jacobus Bruyn was listed under Freeholders, Town of Shawangunk, 1714/5, assessment 120 pounds. Tax 0-158-0.

Most of the Bruyns were heavy men....

The following is the will of Jacobus Bruyn of Bruynswick, being weak and sick, to eldest son Jacobus, the farm whereon I now live, at Shawangunk, 410 acres from the Lloyd Patent; some from the Gertruyd Bruyn Patent; 300 acres of woodland from the patent of John Rutsen and myself, on the north side of Shawangunk kill; my part of tract on southeast side of Shawangunk mountains by me purchased from the trustees of Rochester; together with houses, buildings and orchards.
