Once was a partner in the old Opera House in Keosauqua and in the early days spent 3 years with the circus as a bill poster, traveling over much of the Southwest. The 1900 US Census lists him as a common laborer. He also played football. He said that the Sommerville House used to be where the Old Ruth and Arnold Barker house at 308 Cass St now stands. When George died, Cleo and Seth of Atlanta GA, still survived. George was also a Vol. fireman in Keosauqua.

At this time Ann would have been the ripe old age of 14.
George was a Trunk and harness maker and also for a time, worked as a hotel keeper. They seem to have moved around quite a bit between the states of New York, West Virginia, and Maryland. George and Ann had four children the oldest of which was William born Jul 19, 1841. Two of the children died very young.
Margaret V and Ceyrus E both died as infants.
Sometime berfore the Civil War George and Ann moved to Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA. George ran a hotel called the Sommerville House. He also worked as a trunk maker and served as County Sheriff of Van Buren County for one term. During the Civil War, he attained the rank of captian and commanded the the Iowa 19th infantry volunteers. There is a book called "Immortal Blue" partially written by George in about 1890 in which he documents his units deeds during the Civil War. George and Ann Sommerville are both buried in Purdom Cemetery in Keosauqua.
He is found in the 1880 US Census (Roll 367 page 61). At this time George was listed as Deputy Sheriff and widowed. He is listed as being from Va and his parents are both from Va. He looks to be a boarder in a Hotel or rooming house run by Thomas W Williamson.
