bullet *Hans Hansen Bergen(61) died about 1654 in Brooklyn, New York.(1820) He was born WFT Est. 1594-1627 in Bergen, Norway.

He was married to *Sarah Rapaljie in 1639 in New Amsterdam (Manhattan, New York). (1821) Hans Hansen Bergen (or Van Bergen), the common ancestor of the Bergen family of Long Island and New Jersey, was a native of Bergen, in Norway, whence he emigrated to Holland. In 1633, he came to New Netherland, probably arriving in April on the ship 'Soutberg' with Governor Wouter Van Twiller. His wife was Sarah, daughter of Joris Janse de Rapalie, and was reputed to be the first white child born in the colony of New Netherland. Probably she was the first white female born in the colony.

Bergen managed a tobacco plantation in present-day Harlem. On July 9, 1638, he contracted with Andries Hudde as follows:

"First, the aforesaid Andries Hudde shall by the first opportunity of ships send hither from Holland to Hans Hansen aforesaid six or eight persons with the necessary implements for a tobacco plantation. Hans Hansen shall be bound to place the aforesaid persons on the flat land(3) situated on the island of Manhates behind Corlaer's land.

(3) A tract of 100 morgens (200 acres), extending from the present 109th street to about 124th street, New York City, for which Andries Hudde obtained a patent on July 20, 1638. The tract was originally known as 'Muscoota', and had been granted by the council of New Netherland in 1632, subject to the approval of the directors of the West India Company. De Forest applied on Sept. 11, 1636, to the Amsterdam chamber for a confirmation of the grant and the following month sailed for the second time to New Netherland as mate of the ship 'Rensselaerswyck', apparently without having received the confirmation. On his arrival at Manhattan, in March 1637, De Forest made arrangements to have the land cleared and a house built, but he died on July 26, 1637, leaving the plantation in charge of his brother-in-law, Johannes La Montagne. La Montagne remained in charge till June 22, 1638, and in September of that year brought suit against Domine Bogardus, who had a power of attorney from the widow of Hendrick de forest to look after the property, for the recovery of certain moneys expended at the plantation. In the course of the proceedings, the court ordered that the plantation should be sold at auction for the benefit of the widow and that auction was held on October 7th and La Montagne became the purchaser of the property for 1800 guilders. Meanwhile, Andries Hudde, probably with the consent of Domine Bogardus, had secured a patent for the plantation and gone to Holland, where early in 1639, at Amsterdam, he married Geertruyt Bornstra, the widow of Hendrick de Forest. He returned with her to New Amsterdam in July 1639, and gthe next year entered with La Montagne into an agreement regarding their respective claims, La Montagne being left in possession of the property, which he had named 'Vredendael'....

Hudde shall be bound to pay the expenses of their transportation and of engaging them and shall send the vouchers of expenses over with them.

Hans Hansen shall also be bound to provide dwellings and tobacco houses, as many as the time may permit; he shall also be bound to put the persons who shall come from 'Patria' to work for the profit of both of them. Furthermore, Hans Hansen shall have authority over them in Hudde's absence, without being commanded therein by others. He shall likewise be bound to repay half the expenses which the aforesaid Hudde shall incur and furthermore provide such supply of victuals as shall be necessary for so many persons, on condition that Andires Hudde shall in like manner repay one half of the expenses which Hans shall incur here.

Mr. Hudde shall also be bound to pay Hans Hansen for his industry whatever arbitrators shall judge right. Likewise, Hudde shall not be at liberty to demand from said Hans Hansen any rent for the land, but shall be bound to assist him in every way with effects which he has here, if he has no other use for them and is not prevented from doing so, and all this until Hudde shall have returned, when further arrangements will be made. For what is above written the parties bind their persons and properties, moveable and immovable, present and future, subject to the control of the Provincial Court of Holland and of all other courts, judges and justices, all in good faith, without guile or deceit. In testimony whereof these presents are confirmed with our usual signatures. Thus done in Fort Amsterdam in New Netherland, this 10th of July Ao. 1638.

A. Hudde
This is the X mark of Hans Hansen, aforesaid

Bergen later sold the tobacco plantation to Thomas Hal, tobacco planter, for 1000 Carolus guilders on January 23, 1643.

On March 30, 1647, Hans Hansen Bergen, or "Hans the Boore," as he was sometimes familiarly called, received a patent for 200 morgens (400 acres) of land on Long Island, being a portion of the extensive purchase made by Governor Kieft, in 1638, from the Indian proprietors. This tract of land extended from the Creek of Runnegaconck to the present Division avenue, which formerly marked the boundary between the cities of Williamsburgh and Brooklyn. Following the direction of this avenue to near its intersection with Tenth street, it there passed over it and stretched in a somewhat southeasterly direction, probably as far as the head of Newtown Creek, in the neighborhood of Vandervoort avenue and Montrose street. This patent, therefore, was situated partly in Brooklyn and partly in Bushwick.

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"A tradition in the family is that while Bergen was engaged in the cultivation of his plantation a party of Indians caused him to climb a tree for safety but he was soon discovered. Supposing the end to be near he began singing in the melodious voice with which he was blessed the hymn which begins with 'In mijn grootste nood o'Heere' (In my greatest need, O Lord!). After listening for some time with much delight, the Indians left him unharmed, proving the truth of the words 'Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast.'

Hans lived on the Wallabout, now known as Williamsburgh, or the 4th District of Brooklyn, New York, as early as 1648 where he had 400 acres of land. He owned land northwest of Kings Street and Little Queen Street, near the ferry, on Nassau Island, Town of Breucklin, where the French Church was built later, 1763. He was skipper of the 'Bontecoe', or 'Spotted Cow', in 1663. The 'Bontecoe' was owned by Cornelis de Potter and Guleaim Wys....

Under date of July 18, 1638 Hans Hansen gave power of attorney to Wouter van Twiller, Director of New Netherland. On March 13, 1647, he acquired a lot south of Fort Amsterdam, 'between Jan Snedeker and Joris Rappalje.' Rapalje was his father-in-law. On March 30, 1647 he acquired land on Long Island 'on Jan the Swede's plantation and by Mespath Kill as far as Dirck Volkertsen.' This was at the head of the kill of Mespath, Indian name for Newton, or Newton Creek, in a section called by the Dutch 't Kreuppelbosch' now corrupted to Cripple Bush. The grant was for 400 acres. (J. Riker Annals of Newton 52)

Hans Hansen as well as his wife and her parents, signed their names by marks as the great majority of the inhabitants of New Amsterdam did. It is not certain they could write although some people that could, preferred to sign with a mark or seal. Sometimes his 'H' is made vertically and sometimes horizontally. Hans Hansen is one of the exceptions among the Norwegian settlers in that he is mentioned frequently in books and papers and in a genealogy. Bergen in New Jersey was not named after him but after Bergen op Zoom. There is a Bergen in Holland and in Germany as well as in Norway. Hans was a reputable citizen, and this was stated as a reason for his being acquitted when found guilty of smuggling in 1648. The records say: 'Pardon of Hans Hansen, for fourteen years a respectable resident in New Amsterdam, on a charge of having aided in smuggling, on condition he beg pardon of God and the Court.' (Col. His. Mss I,17)....

Sarah Rapelle, daughter of Joris Jansen Rapelle and Catalyntie Trico ... is said to have been the first white child, female, born in the New Netherlands which covered the present states of New York, New Jersey and part of Connecticut. She made a declaration to this effect 4 April 1656. Another tradition in the family is that the Indians, induced by the circumstances of her being the first white girl born there, gave to Sarah's father and brethren and the French that followed them, the lands adjacent to the bay, hence called Het-Walle-Boght, bay of foreigners, since corrupted to Wallabout Bay. This tradition seems to be corroborated by the earliest deed for land on Long Island given in 1638, making it evident that Joris Rapelle had obtained the title previously from the Canarsie Indians. In the Journal of Dutch Council for the year 1656 it is related that 'The widow of Han Hansen, the first born Christian daughter in the New Netherland, burdened with seven children, petitions for a grant of a piece of meadow in addition to the 20 morgen granted to her at Walleboght.' This is an official document, and should silence those who, after more then two centures, question her right to the honor.

Sarah united with the Protestant Dutch church at Brooklyn, 10 April 1661, by certificate. Her mark 'S'. She married her second husband Teunis Gisbertsen Bogaert who came from Holland in 1652. He married again in 1687 Geertje Jans, widow of Derrick Dey. Bogart in 1667 took out the new patent for Hans Hansen's 200 morgen in his own name instead of in the name of Hans' children, and there is no record that the land was ever turned over to them later...."

bullet *Marytie Hansen Bergen(61) was born before 8 Oct 1651 in New Netherlands (now New York state). She died WFT Est. 1695-1746. Parents: *Hans Hansen Bergen and *Sarah Rapaljie.

She was married to *Jacob Rutsen in 1675. From "The Early History of Kingston & Ulster County", by Marc Fried:

"The identity of the original Kerhonkson Kill, however, is established conclusively by a map drawn in 1713, showing the land of Jacob Rutsen lying along the Rondout Creek, west of the mouth of the Kerhonkson. This parcel on the north side of the Rondout, was named 'Blumardale' or 'Bloomendale' (Flower Valley), and was patented by Rutsen in 1686. [Ulster County Abstracts, A3172, p. 47]" (p. 76)

"It may be that the name Kerhonkson, as used in the Andros Treaty, designated a stream entering the Esopus Creek somewhere north of Kingston. Subsequent to this treaty, however, the name appears primarily in connection with the Jacob Rutsen tract in the vicinity of the present village of Kerhonkson. On April 18, 1683, Rutsen bought from Kentkamin and Harmon Hekan, Esopus Indians, a parcel of thirty morgen (sixty acres) of land, 'situated at Kahakasins, being the first land at said Kahankisins [sic].' Rutsen was granted, in addition, 'the woodland to match (naar advenant) the third acres [sic for 'morgen'] of arable land,' elsewhere described as 'ye wood land in proportion of ye thirty morgan.' Later, Rutsen requested a patent for this land. His land was surveyed in 1685 and patented the following year. The survey description and the map mentioned earlier confirm the location of the Kerhonkson Kill in this vicinity.

Only in the survey description, patent, and map may Rutsen's land be clearly located on the north side of the Rondout Creek, west from the mouth of the Kerhonkson Kill. This is the tract bearing the Dutch name Bloomendale (doubtless given by Rutsen), and was 300 acres in extent. About one-third to one-half of this parcel consists of river lowlands; the remainder is hilly. The Indian deed of 1683 and the request for a patent refer only to 30 morgens (60 acres) of arable land, with an unspecified acreage of woodland, 'situated at Kahakasins.' Although it cannot actually be proved that the patent for Bloomendale covered the same plot of land mentioned in the earlier Indian deed, it is very probably that such was the case. Presumably, only about 60 acres of the river lowlands was already cleared, arable land, and the remaining 240 acres constituted the woodland that was granted to Rutsen in the Indian deed. There is no record of a separate survey or patent for the 60-acre tract, nor is there any record of the 300 acres called Bloomendale antedating the survey description and patent previously cited. It must be concluded that the 300 acres on the north side of the Rondout, lying west and southwest of the Kerhonkson Kill, was the same land purchased from the Esopus Indians in 1683. If this Kerhonkson Kill is the one chosen as the northeast bounds of the lands covered by the Nicolls Treaty, then there is an obvious problem: Rutsen's land clearly would be a part of the tract sold by the Esopus Indians to Governor Nicolls, and it should not have been necessary to pay the Indians once more for the land...." From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"Jacob Rutsen, son of Rutger Jacobse and Tryntje Jans Breestede was born about 1650 in Albany, died 1730 at Rosendale, New York, married 1675 Maria Hansen Bergen who was baptized 10/8/1651 in New Amsterdam, daughter of Hans Hansen Bergen and Sarah Rapelle.

Jacob Rutsen first appears on record at the baptism of a child at New Amsterdam, Oct. 14, 1676, and at Kingston, Nov. 17, 1678 for baptism of Sara. He obtained a patent of land near Kingston, August 26, 1677, for an annual quit rent of five bushels of wheat; another grant Oct. 8, 1677, for one bushel of wheat quit rent annually. About 1670 he moved to Kingston. In 1680 he purchased from the Indians a tract of land in the Town of Rosendale which he leased to Dirck Keyser on condition Keyser erect a stone house thereon. On May 28, 1685, a tract of 983 acres lying on the south side of the Rondout Kill and known by the name of Roasindale, was laid out for Jacob Rutsen. On Oct. 21, 1683, he received from the Town of Hurley a deed for 600 acres located apparently to the south and east of his other tract. In 1695 he bought of Peter Schuyler for seventy pounds 'one third of a tract of land called Wawarsing,' the remaining two thirds being owned by Jan Bleecker, his uncle, and Jochem Statts. On June 25, 1712, there is on record a petition of Jacob Rutsen of Ulster County for 2000 acres 'near the land of which he is already possessed,' that is, near Guilford. This tract was called by the Indians 'Nescatock,' later known as Guilford, and later came into the Possession of Abraham Hardenbergh. On June 5, 1712, a petition was filed by John Rutsen, J. Bruin of Ulster County on behald of themselves and Company, for 3000 acres of the Evans tract 'contiguous to their lands in Shawangunk.' Eldredge-Dutcher says that Jacob Rutsen and his son-in-law, Johannes Hardenbergh, possessed a domain greater than many a Grand Duchy in Germany. Mrs. Ross Osterhoudt, Stone Ridge, New York, has the original inventory of Jacob Rutsen. The document is dated April 22, 1729 has eight pages folded in booklet form crosswise. He is listed as having fourteen slaves.

In 1692, 1693, 1699, 1700 Jacob Rutsen represented Ulster and Dutchess counties in the Colonial Assembly of New York, and Ulster County 1714-1715. In 1700 he was field officer of the Ulster County Militia with a regiment of 325 men, with rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel 1710-1728. On August 30, 1685 he was ensign in a Ffoote Company for New Paltz.
