came about 1635 with his wife and son and her 2 brothers Walter and John
Deane. His first wife died on the passage, and her infant about two
months later.
John Strong was at Hingham 1635-38; Freeman 1636; proprietor at Taunton
1639-45; Deputy of the General Court in Plymouth in the years 1641, 43,
44; went about 1645 to Windsor, CT; to Northampton 1659; and lived there
40 years; one of its first and most active settlers; a leading man in
town and church. John Strong had come from a tanning family and when he
moved to Windsor, he bought the tannery from Thomas Thornton, which was
located inside the Palisido, a stockaded area protecting the center of
town. His son Return would inherit this tanyard. The Strongs and the
Fords had adjacent home lots on the lane to the ferry in the Palisado.
In 1660 John Strong, his father in law Thomas Ford, and brother in law
Aaron Cooke elected to move up the Connecticut Valley to become founding
families in Northampton. He established a Tannery there also, and became,
on JUne 13, 1663, a ruling elder of the church. He died at the age of 94
years, the father of 16 children.
He was a pioneer and an active and honored citizen in Hingham, Taunton,
Windsor and Northampton,; ancestor of nearly all Strongs in America.
Jarvis Strong, president of the Strong Family Ass. of America is putting
the final touches on the Dwight Strongs update for publication in
December. Seems the official position of the Strong Assn. "From new
evidence developed in the last two years our official position is that
Elder John did come over on the Mary and John in 1630 but he went back to
England and returned with his family
in 1635 on the "Hopewell". This information is not necessarily
inconsistent
with what is being said of WILLIAM CLARK. Parents: John Strong and Unknown.
