bullet Marten Cornelise* Van Ysselstyn(109) was born about 1635 in Ysselstyn, Utrecht, Netherlands. He died after 1677 in prob. Claverack, New Netherland. It is not known when he came to America, but he was located at Rensselaerwyck, New Netherlands. On June 18, 1661 one Arent Van Curler wrote from that place to Gov. Peter Stuyvesant a statement about a dispute over Fort Orange [Albany], saying that he had previously spoken with the governor at Manhatans about this property. They had laid out a new settlement called Schanechstede [Schenectady]; which was being done under protest of Gov. Stuyvesant. They would agree however, to uphold the laws of the "Noble West India Company". Marten was one of 14 persons signing this document. He became one of the original proprietors and founders of Schenectady. After living there six years he sold his farms and moved to Claverack, N.Y. in 1677 with his family of more than eight children. Claverack is located along the Erie Canal near Princeton, N.Y. in what is today Columbia County. In 1908 this homestead was owned by an Everett J. Esselstyne, a N.Y. attorney. Marten made his will on Jan. 12, 1677.
