bullet *Annetje Cornelis VanDeCuyl(61) was born about 1640 in probably Holland. She died WFT Est. 1689-1735 in New York. Parents: *Cornelis Barenteen VanDeCuyl and *Elizabeth Arents.

She was married to *Cornelis Cornelissen Vernooy WFT Est. 1656-1688. New England Historical and Genealogical Register, v. 106, pp4-14, January 1952:

"Cornelis Cornelissen Vernoy (his patronymic is evident from the baptismal entries of his children) arrived here with his wife (Annatje Cornelis) and a [sucking] child (Lysbeth) on 'de Trouw'* which had sailed from the Netherlands 20 Jan. 1664. In The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, 1929, p. 102, are given what are supposed to be the names of the father and grandfather of the settler without, however, the benefit of any proof whatever. In any case the name Vernooy (Vernoey - verdriet, meaning sorrow) is unusual enough so that we may safely assume that the settler belonged to a family of that name which resided at Wyk-by-Duurstede in the Province of Gelderland from an early date. The earliest mention of the name which I have noted was of Willem Vernoy who rented the manor of Natewisch, Utrecht, in 1547 (Navorscher, 1903:383). Cornelis Jacobsz Vernoy born in Sticht (the Bishopric) of Utrecht and twenty-one years old married in 1602 at Wyk-by-Duurstede Anna, the dau. of Capt. Marishall (Algemeen Geertruida van Kriekenbeek a name also found in New Netherland). She married as his widow in 1662 at Cothen near Wyk-by-Duurstede (the ancestral home of the van Cortlandt family), for on 8 March 1707, Johannes, a native of that town, married Catharina van Gramsbergen at Amersfoort where both of them were living at that time. While on 18 March 1739, there was baptised at Wyk-by-Duurstede Maria Vernoy, a daughter of Jan Vernoy and Emerentia Van Eyndhoven, these persons incidentally being ancestors of the writer. And finally Adriaen Vernoy of Wyk-by-Duurstede is mentioned on 18 Oct. 1715 as a tenant of a fief situated in Gelderland (Powers of Attorney (Volmachten) of the Court of Landtenure of Gelderland).

"During the seventeenth century there were several members of this family to be found in the Province of Gelderland in and around the town of Brakel (the place of origin of the van Brakelen family). In the third quarter of the seventeenth century Cornelis Vernoy was the Scholtus, a sheriff, of the manor of Brakel, and the Dike Reeve of the district and one of the tenants of land belonging to the manor. His wife was Elisabeth van den Burchgraeff mentioned as his widow in 1674 (Navorscher, 1915). Cornelis died 11 Jan. 1673 (Ned Leeuw, 1947:406). His will, dated 30 Sept. 1670, is in the Archives of the Court of Land Tenure of Gelre. At the time of making his will he was a schepen of Zuylichem, a town near Brakel.

"There is also mention of Dirck Vernoy, Gherard Vernoy, and Anthony Vernoy in these same archives during the second half of the seventeenth century (respectively 3 May 1648, 12 Nov. 1665, and 4 Aug 1698) and what is of importance their seals attached to these papers have been preserved. These all show: Or three chevrons Gules. As a crest we find a pair of wings and also a pair of wings charged as the arms. The colors have been taken from the Roll-of-arms of the Aalmoesenierskamer, Chamber of Alms, support of the Poor of Utrecht, of which Anthony Vernoy was a regent in 1699.

"A thorough search in the archives of Utrecht and Gelderland would undoubtedly disclose the family of the settler and establish his right to these arms."

[*Note: The ship "de Trouw" was called, in English, "Faith", and is the same ship on which the Low family arrived in 1659.]

From Wawarsing, Where The Streams Wind by Katharine T. Terwilliger:

"The first man to live on land he owned appears to be Cornelis Vernooy. In 1702 Anna Beek Phenix, her second husband, and two children by her first marriage, sold some 400 acres to Cornelis Vernooy. The deed gives his address as Wawarasink, so apparently he had been living there before his purchase. He bought not only the 400 acres of land but all the houses, barns, stables and fences on it. For this he paid 'a competent summe of money' and, for an unspecified time, was to pay 'four bushels of good winter Marchantable wheat yearely on ye five and twentieth day of March in ye City of new Yorke...'.
Mr. Vernooy could not have been a young man when he bought the land. According to a shipping list Corneliss Cornelisse Vernoey, his wife and sucking child left Holland in 1664 on the Geloove (meaning Faith). They lived in Kingston for a time. If we imagine him as 20 when he left Holland, he would have been 58 in 1702." page 4.

"The first grist mill in the present Town of Wawarsing was erected by Cornelis Vernooy, presumably soon after he purchased land in Wawarsing. It was along the stream later named in his honor. The fact that in the early 1700s there was need for a grist mill here indicates that farms were growing in number. One cannot overestimate the boon the Vernooy mill would have been. Until then farmers could make only a coarse meal and that in such small quantities as could be ground out by hand with a pestle. They came from as far away as today's Grahamsville to have their grain ground at Wawarsing. Tradition (or folklore) says Mr. Vernooy brought the running gear for his mill from Holland." ...page 7.

From the Ellenville Journal, Nov. 13, 1969, by Katharine T. Terwilliger:

"Succeeding generations of Vernooys ran the mill in Wawarsing and lived in the stone house near it which their ancestor had built.... By the mid-1850's, perhaps sooner, the grist mill passed from the Vernooy family. There were many owners until it burned in 1897."

bullet *Cornelis Jansen Dominicus Vanderveer(61) was born before 3 Mar 1622/23 in Wemeldinge, Zeeland, Holland. He died before 22 Feb 1702/3 in New York. Parents: *Jan Cornelisse Dominicus and *Neeltje Kempe.

He was married to *Tryntie Jillis Mandeville WFT Est. 1669-1692. From "New York Genealogical & Biographical Record", Vol. 79 (year 1948), pp. 76-81:

"On the 20th of June 1706, there appeared in the office of Notary Public Cornelis van Aansburg at Dordrecht, Netherlands, 'the Honorable Dominicus Dominicussen van der Veer, living at Midwout in the Province of New York,' who submitted two powers of attorney. Of these the first one is of pertinent interest to the Van der Veer family and was executed at New York on Nov. 20, 1705. (O.S.) In it Tryntje Jillis, widow and heir of the late Cornelis Dominicus, (more commonly known as Cornelis de Seeuw), and her children appointed their beloved and trusted son and brother, Dominicus Dominicussen van der Veer, to collect in their name all sums of money due the estate of the late Cornelis Dominicus, as joint heirs of the same. The power of attorney was to apply to all outstanding debts in any part of Europe with special reference to any part of the seven provinces of the United Netherlands and especially to collect a debt from Jacob Dominicus, his heirs or assignees; the said Jacob Dominicus was then living or had lived in or near the city of Ter Goes on the island of South Beveland in the province of Zeeland. The debt was for 3230 gulden as was evident from a note executed by Jacob Dominicus on March 24, 1671; in it he declared that he owed his brother, Cornelis Jansz Dominicus, that amount, in payment for land 'situated in Zeeland,' and he promised to pay him 1200 gulden in May 1672, and similar sums in each following May until the total had been paid in full. The power of attorney listed those who executed it as follows: Tryntje Jillis, widow of Cornelis Jansz Dominicus, and her children Jan Dominicus, Daniel Polhemus husband of Neeltje Dominicus, Jan Dorland husband of Maris Dominicus, Isaac Remsen husband of Hendrickje Dominicus, and Jan Couwenhoven husband of Jacoba Dominicus, all of whom signed the document....

In the old world, where custom and tradition have always governed the every-day life of its inhabitants, it is a common occurrence to find a family engaged in the same occupation for several generations, and in the same town or community. This was particularly true with regard to the Dominicus family who, from the time of their first appearance in the records during the latter half of the sixteenth century until the present day, have been tillers of the soil in the immediate neighborhood of Goes. They were well-to-do farmers, apparently, not peasants but 'lantmannen', as is evident from the records. At first they operated a 'hoeve', or farm, belonging to one of the several manors in the neighborhood but they later became freeholders by buying their own land; in time, they filled positions of trust, such as village sheriff and secretary, and intermarried with families of like standing.

In the Netherlands a large part of the land was divided into manors. The lord of the manor, which might be an individual, a family group, or even a religious or lay institution, leased the farm to individuals, mostly in perpetual rent. The tenants paid their rents in money or in kind and, when ownership changed, 'verheergewaden', or special fees, were paid to the lord. It was on such a farm located amid countless cherry orchards, in the village of Kloetinge near the Munnikendyk in the Monsterhoek, that we find the first known ancestor of the family.

1. Dominicus Jansz, who was born about 1525, was a schepen of Kloetinge, that is a member of the Court which heard not only both civil and criminal cases, there, but which registered deeds and other legal papers. The records of such courts are one of the most fruitful sources of information in tracing a family pedigree. He married Mayken Jansz van Schule of Goes who died before 1585, and whose family had originally come from Flanders. Their seven sons are mentioned in two marriage contracts dated in 1585 and 1587, respectively. One of the sons, Marinus Dominicus, moved to the adjacent village of Hoedekenskerke where he had a farm in the Slabbekoornhoek. These names ending in 'hoek' indicate an administrative part of a manor.

2. Cornelis Dominicus, probably the second of the seven sons referred to above, died before 1629. He was a 'lantman' at Tervaten and is mentioned as a schepen between 1586 and 1621, and as a sheriff in 1622. The name of his wife has not been found but his four daughters are enumerated in the will of his brother-in-law Geert Jans a baker at Goes, while his son Jan is mentioned in two schepen records.

3. Jan Cornelisse Dominicus, son of the preceding, and the first to adopt the name Dominicus, died before 1649. He lived in the village of Wemedinge, near Kloetinge, and is mentioned as a 'lantman' and schepen there. His wife's name was Neeltje Kempe and the baptisms of the following children are recorded in Wemedinge:

+4. ? Dominicus bap. Mar. 3, 1623, the American settler.
+5. Jacob Dominicus bap. Dec. 26, 1626
+6. Maeyken Dominicus bap. Apr. 2, 1631

We know both from other records at Wemeldinge and from the notarial paper quoted above that Jan Cornelisse had two sons, Cornelis and Jacob; also, that Cornelis, in 1649, had reached his majority which at that time, in the Netherlands, indicated that he was at least twenty-five years of age. While the given name of the eldest child of Jan Cornelisse and Neeltje is too illegible in the records to decipher, with the facts just quoted from other original sources, we can assume that this entry undoubtedly refers to Cornelis, the American settler. It is likewise interesting to note that Cornelis named his oldest daughter Neeltje after his own mother.

4. Cornelis Jansz Dominicus, also known as Cornelis Jansz de Seeuw (the man from Zeeland), and as Cornelis Jansz van der Veer, is, in all probability as I have shown, the child that was baptized at Wemeldinge Mar. 3, 1623. while still a young man his father died and it appears that he contracted debts through unsuccessful business ventures. In 1649, he sold one hald of a 'hoeve' to his brother Jacob and we know from the notarial record that he disposed of considerable property in 1671. Finally he decided to emigrate to New Netherland and in February of 1659 he boarded the good ship, 'Otter'. His name and occupation on the West India Company's Passenger List appeared as Cornelis Jansz Van der Veer, Farmer, (HSYB, 1902, p.10), and apparently he settled on Long Island which must have reminded him of his native land. Why he dropped the fine old name of Dominicus, being the only one of his family to do so, and adopted that of Van der Veer is not known; it may be that he intended to break forever with the past and to start a new life beyond the seas. Van der Veer is translated 'from the ferry' of which means of transportation there were quite a few in his native archipelago; only a quarter of a mile from his birthplace was the ferry to Bergen op Zoom on the main land.

When leaving for New Netherland Cornelis, apparently, had not disposed of all of his holdings. That he appointed his brother Jacob Jansz Dominicus, to look after his interests is evident from the following schepen record in the archives of Wemeldinge, dated Dec. 24, 1661 (Inv. Lasonder 3605), which reads in part: 'Appeared before schepens, as indicated below, Jacob Cornelis Rombouts declaring that he lawfully owes Jacob Dominicus, as representing his brother Cornelis Dominicus who is absent from this country, the sum of XXX L, VI sch(ellingen), and XXV D(uyten) 'landpagt' (rent of land) due since 1659,' the Cornelis left for New Netherland. He presently agreed to borrow this amount at 5% interest and to date the debt back to 1659. The first installment was to be paid on Christmas Day 1662, and yearly payments of both interest and principal were to be made thereafter until the entire debt was liquidated; this was expected to be done in three years. As security he gave a mortgage on his house (described), all his personal belongings and his own person! The document was signed and sealed Dec. 24, 1661, in the presence of Christian Foortsen and Adr. de Wagemaker (the cartwright), schepens.

It is not until two years after Cornelis had sailed for the New World that his name as Cornelis Jansen Vanderveer first appears in records, together with six others, when they petition Gov. Peter Stuyvesant, on Jan. 13, 1661, for a patent of land on the Canarisse (CDNY 14:501). It is possible that the grant of sixty morgens of land in Midwout, Mar. 12, 1661, to Cornelis Jansen refers to him and also the mention of a Cornelis Jansen having land next to a parcel which Gerrit Snedicker had purchased there in 1684; however, we are not certain as there were others here at that time who had the same Christian name and patronymic....

In 1683, Cornelis Van der Veer is listed on the Assessment roll of Midwout as the owner of one hundred acres of land and in the Flatbush Census of 1698 his household consisted of one man, one woman, and four children; two other children had already married and started households of their own. Cornelis died before Feb. 22, 1703, when his widow paid for a grave in the church at Flatbush for her husband. She Tryntje Mandeville, daughter of Gillis Jansz Mandeville, who mentions her in his will dated Sept. 15, 1696, and his wife Elizabeth Hendricks....

In addition [to the six known children], there may have been three other children who died as infants; it is possible that a child was lost as early as 1667-68, and that two others died in 1682 when payments were made to the church for two graves." Children were: *Jan Cornelise Dominicus Vanderveer, Neeltje Cornelise Vanderveer, Dominicus Dominicussen Vanderveer, Maria Dominicus Vanderveer, Hendrikje Vanderveer , Jacoba "Coba" Vanderveer.
