Fort Niagara:

When the American Revolution broke out in 1776, Fort Niagara on the east side of the Niagara River was a fully developed outpost. Beginning as an Indian stockade, the French developed it into a fort which the British subsequently captured and held during the 1770's. Butler's Rangers used it as a staging ground, and as the revolution ground on, Loyalists moved toward it in greater numbers.

Before the revolution ended officially in 1783, Loyalists from the east were moving across the Niagara to the 'western land', now Niagara Township [Ontario]. The earliest settlers were Butler's Rangers released from active duty. Lieut. Adam Crysler was one of the earliest settlers. Crossing in 1781, he settled without clear title to his land.

Then, in 1784, the Mississauga Indian tribe sold a strip of land from Four Mile Creek to Burlington. Parcels of this land, acquired for one-tenth of a penny per acre, were granted by the Crown to many of Butler's Rangers....

Before the official end of hostilities, as early as 1782, Butler asked King George III for permission to release officers and soldiers with families at Fort Niagara, so that they could settle in present-day Niagara Township. 'These people were bred farmers, and I am of the opinion will soon be useful to this post, as well as to enable them to support their families comfortably, which at present is very difficult,' Butler told King George in one communique.

Some soldiers with families at the fort were released from active duty. Recruits from the Niagara frontier kept the ranks up to full complement. By 1782, there were 16 families living in what is now Niagara Township. They were Niagara's first-known European (American) settlers, and for the record, the breadwinners are listed below:

Isaac Dolson Samuel Lutz
Peter Secord Michael Showers
John Secord Hermanus House
George Fields Thomas McMicking
John Depue Adam Young
Daniel Rowe McGregor Van Every
Elijah Phelps George Stuart
Philip Bender James Secord

These families struggles along, ripping roots from the ground and trying to cultivate the virgin land. In 1782 there were 68 persons living in the township, and these hardy souls had already cleared 236 acres of land. Their lands that year produced 206 bushels of wheat, 46 bushels of oats, 926 bushels of Indian corn, and 630 bushels of potatoes. The land also supported 49 horses, 30 sheep, 42 cows and 103 hogs.

Their remarkably productive record was achieved despite miserable housing, with few agricultural implements, and without the know-how accumulated only by trial-and-error over the years...."

From "The Records of the Van Every Family":

David Van Every, oldest son of McGregory van Every,... in 1777 was called as witness as to details of the Wyoming massacre; in the same year he left the New York Militia to join the British army. In 1784 he was settled in Niagara with wife and two children, listed as 'a young settler receiving rations'. He and his brother are among the subscribers to St. Andrew's Church Building Fund. For his services as sergeant in the Butler Rangers in the Revolutionary War he was granted Lot 5 Concession 1, Flamboro West and Lot 8 Concession 8, Ancaster. The year following he was granted an additional 300 acres for his wife and children. David lived in Flamborn until 1817, when with some of his sons he moved to South Dumfries.
