He was Master of a vessel in the West Indies while in his 20's. He was admitted by Selectmen to Boston 6 May 1714. Two years later in Marlborough, he purchased 2 shares out of 23 in 3200 acres of "Haynes Farm". They formed a new township and named it Shrewsbury with 44 original proprietors (Nahum was one). Ten years later, the town was incorporated and he was named Moderator or Mayor, chairman of the first board of Selectmen and assessor. He was Mayor for 22 years and selectman for 23 years. He served 8 years in the Legislature. In 1731, he was admitted to the bar and was a lawyer and justice of the peace. In 1745, he was appointed Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. In 1722 he was Ensign in the town's Foot Company and moved up to command a Regiment around 1736. He also had interests in land and business in Sturbridge, Tirringham. About 1725, he built a house opposite the Arteman Ward House and lived there until his death. Later, it became known as Baldwin Tavern, now a part of Dean Park.
