Original Hartford proprietor 1639. One of a commission that sat with Court of Magistrates in 1642. In 1638 allowed to trade with Indians. Appointed in 1642 on committee to create fortification & to collect tribute from Indians on LI and the Mainland.
A wealthy merchant, he had dealings with Virginia & a trading house on the Delaware. Also had dealings in Pisquataqua.
Under his will, dated 24 July 1647, he left estate of 2,854 lbs.

*John Whitley⁽⁶¹⁾ was born before 19 Jun 1540 in Northowram, Halifax parish, Yorkshire, England. He died before 3 Aug 1614 in Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, England. Parents: *John Whytlay and *Agnes (Whytlay).

He was married to *Agnes Mawde WFT Est. 1558-1588. From "Colonial Families of Long Island, NY, and Connecticut" by Herbert Furman Seversmith, 1939:

"Susan Whitley, wife of Abraham Halstead of Northowram in the parish of Halifax, Yorkshire, was baptised in the parish church at that place 1 February, 1572/3. She was the daughter of John Whitley or Whytlay, a clothier of the township of Warley in Halifax Parish, by his wife Agnes Mawde. This John Whitley was baptised in the parish church at Halifax 19 June, 1540/1, and was resident of Ovenden and then Warley. His will, dated 16 January, 1612/3 was proved 3 August, 1614, and is incorrectly quoted in "Transactions of the Halifax Antiquarian Society, 1934, pp. 155+. Their children were Susann, baptised 16 June, 1566, died 1 February 1571/2; Johannes (John), baptised 24 June, 1568, married in October or November of 1597 to Sybil Lister, daughter of thomas of Ovenden; Grace, baptised 8 October, 1570, married about 1591 to Oliver Whitton; Susan (as above); Matthew, baptised 2 October, 1571, died 1 April, 1587; Joseph, baptised 12 October 1578; Mychaell, baptised 23 April, 1581, died after 1613, married and had issue; and Marie, who married about 1605, Edward Farnhill.

John Whitley who married Agnes Mawde was the son of John Whitley, Whytlay, or Qwytlay of Wheatley near Ovenden, Halifax Parish, Yorkshire; he was born about 1510 and was buried from the parish church at Halifax 3 December, 1561. His will was dated 29 November, 1561. He married Agnes, married name unknown, who was buried 15 March, 1554/5. Their children were Gener; John, married Agnes Mawde; and Elizabeth.

John Whitley of Wheatley (about 1510-1561), the foregoing, was son in turn of Johannes Qwytlay of Whytlay, ov Ovenden, Halifax. The latter was born about 1475 and was buried 1 February, 1539/40. His widow Johanna was buried 9 January, 1540/1. The will of John Whytlay was dated 28 February, 1538/9 and was proved 1 March, 1539/40. His ancestry is unknown.

Agnes Mawde, wife of John Whitley, was baptised in the parish church at Halifax, 13 March, 1542, as daughter of James Mawde of Earoyd (?Eastroyd, a locality in the town of Warley). She was the daughter of James Mawde of that place, born about 1510, by a wife whose name is not found. The children of James Mawde were Johannes, buried 8 April, 1541; Agnes (as given), Gilbert, baptised 3 January, 1544; Johanna, baptised 27 January, 1547/8; Elizabeth, baptised 21 February, 1553/4; Richard, buried 6 April, 1562, and James, baptised 13 October, 1558.

James Mawde was the son of Richard Mawde of Warley, born about 1485, will dated 22 December, 1540, proved 15 March, 1540/1; by his wife Margaret. He was a clothmaker. The children mentioned in the will were John, Agnes, Elizabeth, Margaret, Jennet and James. The wife Margaret and the son James were to be executors." Children were: Susanna Whitley, Johannes Whitley, Grace Whitley, *Susan Whitley, Matthew Whitley, Joseph Whitley, Mychaell Whitley, Marie Whitley.

*Susan Whitley⁽⁶¹⁾ was born on 1 Feb 1572/73 in Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, England. She died WFT Est. 1613-1668. Parents: *John Whitley and *Agnes Mawde.

She was married to *Abraham Halstead on 5 Sep 1596 in Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, England. From "Colonial Families of Long Island, NY, and Connecticut", by Herbert Furman Seversmith, 1939:

Abraham Halstead "was born about 1570, perhaps in Lancashire. The baptismal record has not been found. He was a resident of Northowram in Halifax parish, Yorkshire, where he was a clother. His life was destined to be short, as he had died before 10 June, 1613. His will, dated 5 September, 1612, was proved 10 June, 1613, and is filed in the York "Registry", vol. 32, f. 402; in it he calls himself of Northowram.

Abraham Halstead married in the parish church at Halifax, 5 September 1596 to Susan Whitley, who survived him....

The foregoing is taken from the original parish register entries of Halifax, as searched for on behalf of Mr. Wardwell and the writer. Reference is already made to the wil of Abraham Halstead. An abstract follows:

Abraham Halsteade of Northowram in the county of York, (will of) dated 5 September, 1612, proved 10 June, 1613, by the executors. Clothier. To be buried in the church or churchyard at Halifax. To Susan Halsteade my wife my best bed with all the furniture and her chist (sic) with things therein and all such pewther and other lynninges as I now have that weare her own goods before she and I married and the sume of three score pounds. The rest of all my goods chattels credits and debts I give to my children Abraham, Joseph, Jerimie and Jonas my sonnes and Grace and Susan my daughters equally.

I commit the education and tuition and government of Abraham Halsteade my son and his porcin to John Whitely of Burnfield in Bollinge of Joseph Halsteade my second sonne to John Boyes of Halifax of Jeremie Halsteade my third sonne to Joseph Wood of Northowram of Jonas my fourth and youngest sonne to Susan my wife of Grace Halsteade my elder daughter to Michael Whitley of Ovenden and of Susan my youngest daughter to Joseph Whitley of Ovenden. executors John Whiteley of Bowling and Joseph Wood of Northowram.

The foregoing will is also indexed in the Yorkshire Archaeological Society Record Series, vol. XXVIII, p. 56.

At this writing an examination is being made of the burial registers of Halifax parish to determine the death dates (approximately) of members of this family. An absence of any burial entry for a Jonas Halstead would appear to confirm the connection that is proposed here, and which we believe to be correct [that this is the same Jonas who came to America]." Children were: Grace Halstead, Abraham , Jr. Halstead, Susan Halstead, Joseph Halstead, Jeremy Halstead, *Jonas Halstead.
