ancient English family which as been traced several generations.
The following is an article which appeared in the Hampshire Gazette &
Courier, dated March 20, 1866. "Deacon Samuel Wright, one of the first
settlers of Springfield, was a resident of that town as early as 1641.
After Rev. Mr. Moxon, first minister of Springfield, returned to England,
Deacon Wright "was employed to despense the word of God in this place,"
and was allowed 50 shillings a month for his services. Other laymen were
also employed in the same way. Deacon Wright was also one of
the first settlers of Northampton, wither he removed in 1656 or 7, and
where he died in 1665. HIs brother, Nathaniel, was a merchant in London,
and
was interested in the Winthrop Colony in 1630. Their father, it is said,
was John Wright, of Kevedon, and the grandfather, John Wright, of
Wright's
bridge, in Essex, about 40 miles east of London. Samuel Wright, oldest
son of Deacon Samuel, lived in NOrthampton. One of his sons, Capt.
Benjamin, was slain by the Indians at Northfield. Another son, Samuel,
had 8 children, one of whom, Stephen, was chosen deacon of the church in
Northampton, but in 1744 he removed to Easthampton."
Of Samuel's settlement in Northampton the following is written in a
family genealogy: "That beautiful valley of rich land was acquired from
its savage occupants by the English settlers, through severe hardships,
and many sanguinary conflicts; and men less daring in adventure would
scarcely have undertaken its settlement; and men whose characteristics
were of a less positive quality could not have succeeded. It is,
therefore, but an act of duty, and a just tribute of affection to their
memories, to rescue, if possible, their names from the perishing records
of their time, and not only incorporate them with the annuals of the
present, but, as objects affectionate rememberance, inscribe them in our
family memorials."
Samuel and his wife Margaret had ten children, and Thomas W. Pomeroy of
Westfield was descended from two of them, Samuel Wright, Jr., who was
killed by Indians at Northfield during King Philip's War, and Joseph
Wright.
