Janse Breestede(61) was born about
1630 in Breestede, Schleswig, Denmark. She died after 1684 in probably Ulster
County, New York. Parents: *Jan Janse Breestede
and *Engeltje Jans. She was married to
Adriaen Petersen Van Alcmaer on 17 May 1643 in New Netherlands. She was
married to *Hendrick Jochemse Schoonmaker in 1657
in Albany, New York.(3097) From "The
History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1881:
"Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker was a native of Hamburg, in Germany. The
precise time of his arrival in this country is not known, but he came in the
military service of the Dutch West India Company, and was lieutenant 'in the
company of his noble Honor the Director General.' It is certain that he was
there as early as the year 1654, for there is a record of his advance of money
in that year to Governor Stuyvesant 'in time of need'. He was an innholder at
Fort Orange, and acquired the title to considerable real estate. He owned, besides
other lots, a lot on the east corner of what is now Broadway and State Street.
In the fall of 1659 his company was ordered to Esopus for the defence of the
settlers in their troubles with the Indians. He was there in 1660, and at the
expiration of his enlistment he settled at Esopus. A short time afterward, in
1662, when the burghers organized a company of militia at Esopus, he was appointed
lieutenant under Thomas Chambers as captain.
Hendrick Jochemsen married Elsie Janse, daughter of Jan Janse Breestede and widow
of Adriaen Petersen Van Alcmaer. He died about 1681, and his widow, September
26th, 1684, married Cornelis Barentsen Slecht.
Hendrick left four children, Jochem Hendrick, Egbert, Engetje, and Hillitje."

From "Scandinavian Immigrants in New York", by John O. Evjen, 1972,
page 212 (from the chapter on Danish immigrants):
"Elsje Jans, from 'Breestede' (Bredstedt), a daughter of Jans Jansen and
Engeltje Jan van Breestede, came with her parents to New Netherland in 1636.
She was married, on May 17, 1643, to Adriaen Pietersen van Alcmar, widower of
Grietje Pietersen.
The Council minutes of that period tell us how Adriaen wooed and won her as his
wife. It appears that Elsje was in the service of Cornelis Melyn of Staten Island.
She left the service before her term had expired, in order to marry Adriaen.
Melyn was much displeased at this, and brought suit against Egbert Woutersen,
her stepfather, 'husband and guardian of Engel Jan, her mother', for damages
on account of Elsje's marriage engagement.
Elsje appeared in court on September 11, 1642, and testified that 'her mother
and another woman had brought a young man to Staten Island.' She claimed she
had never seen him before. They desired that she should marry him. She declined
at first, but finally consented. 'She concluded her testimony by returning in
court the pocket-handkerchief she had received as a marriage present.'
Five days later she made the declaration that she sent for Adriaen Pietersen,
and that on his coming to Staten Island she accompanied him on board his yawl.
A week later, Melyn and the Fiscal had Pietersen before the court, charged with
Elsje's abduction. Pieterson was ordered to bring her into court, deliver her
to Melyn, and receive her again from him 'on giving security for the payment
of the damage Melyn may have suffered.' [New York G&B Record, VII, p.117]
After the death of Adriaen Pietersen, Elsje married Hendricksen Jochemsen, of
Esopus. After his death she married Cornelis Barentsen Slecht (Sleght), who
was in New Amsterdam in 1662, and at Wiltwyck (Esopus) in 1664."

From "The Early History of Kingston & Ulster County", by Marc Fried:
"On Thursday, June 7, 1663, between eleven and twelve o'clock, when nearly
all the men were at work in the fields, a large number of Indians began entering
Wildwyck from different points, in bands, dispersing among the dwellings in a
seemingly friendly manner, under pretense of bartering a little maize and some
beans. The visitors had been in Wildwyck about a quarter of an hour when some
people on horseback rushed through the mill gate crying out 'The Indians have
destroyed the New Village!'. The Indians at Wildwyck then commenced a general
attack on the bewildered inhabitants, murdering them in their houses with axes
and tomahawks and firing on them with guns.... In the meantime, the New Village
had suffered a similar fate. The entire settlement was burned to the ground,
except for a new unroofed barn, a rick, and a small stack of reed. Here, according
to the official report, there were three men killed. There were no wounded,
but a man and thirty-four women and children were carried off by the Indians.
In Wildwyck twelve men (including three soldiers), four women, and two children
were reported dead, with ten women and children taken prisoner. Eight men were
injured, one of whom died nine days later of his wounds. Twelve houses were
burned. Hendrick Jochemsen (Schoonmaker) was 'very severely wounded in his house
[in Wildwyck] by two shots at an early hour.' A child of Schoonmaker was among
those taken prisoner from the New Village. Also taken captive from the New Village
were the wife and three children of Lambert Huybertsen (Brink), two children
of Albert Heymans Roosa, the wife and child of Antoine Crispell, and the wife
and three children of Louis DuBois...." (pp. 61-62)

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:
"Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker was born at Hanse Town, near Hamburg, Germany.
He died about 1681 at Kingston, married at Albany ca 1657/8 Elsie Janse Van
Breestede of New Amsterdam, daughter of Jan Janse Breestede and Engeltje Jans,
and widow of Adriaen Pieterszen Van Alcmaer by whom she had three children (
5/17/1643) She married (3) Cornelis Barentsen Slecht.
Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker came to New York in 1654 in the military service
of the Dutch West India Company. He settled at Albany prior to 1655 and kept
an inn there. Schoonmaker purchased considerable property and loaned money to
Governor Stuyvesant 'in time of need.' He had lot No. 1 at Wiltwyck, and was
a member of the Citizens Council of War in that village, and a signer of the
ordinance drawn up on the first day of January Anno 1663, with Thomas Chambers,
Cornelis Barentsen Slecht, and Pieter Jacobsen. He was Lieutenant of Militia
stationed at Esopus 1660 with his company and settled there at the expiration
of his term of enlistment. At the time of the burning of Wiltwyck by the Indians
June 7, 1663, he was severly wounded and one of his children was captured. At
that time he lived near the Mill Gate. His commission was renewed April 18,
1670.
Hendrick was called 'Hendrick the smith.' On official papers he signed his name
Hendrick Jochemsen. Court records of Kingston say 'he was recently deceased
Nov. 7, 1682.' The descendants of Hendrick Jochemsen Schoonmaker are quite numerous
in Ulster County, New York, and are widely scattered. Their children seem to
have settled in Rochester, Ulster County; all had large families. They had sixteen
children.
Their first child Jochem Hendrickse married 1679 Petronella Slecht."

Janse Breestede(61) was born about
1596 in Breestede, Schleswig, Denmark. He died before 1 Sep 1641 in New Amersterdam
(now New York City). He was married to *Engeltje
Jans WFT Est. 1613-1639. From "Scandinavian Immigrants to New York",
by John O. Evjen, 1972:
"Engeltje Jans, from 'Breestede' (Bredstedt, in Schleswig), came with her
husband, Jan Jansen, to New Amsterdam about 1636. By him she had the following
children: 1) Tryntie, who was married to Rutger Jacobsen Schoonderworth or Van
Woert, and whose descendants assumed the name of Rutgers; 2) Jan Jansen van Breestede,
who in 1647 married Marritje Lucas (Andries); 3) Dorothea Jans van Breestede,
who in 1650 was married to Volckert Janszen from Frederickstadt, and whose descendants
comprise the Dow family of New York; 4) Elsie Jans van Brestede, who was married
three times....
After the death of Jan Jansen, Engeltje Jans was married on September 1, 1641,
to Egbert Woutersen, of Isselsteyn. He is often mentioned in the Court Record
of New Amsterdam 1653-1674 as arbitrating in disputes. He and his wife were
frequently invited to stand sponsors at baptisms.
They made their will on June 20, 1652.
Woutersen took the lease of a bowery on December 1, 1646, on Manhattan; and on
May 10, 1647, he obtained a patent for a tract of land, called in Indian Apocalyck,
lying across the North River, west of the Manhattan.
Woutersen died 1680, without issue."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:
"Jan Jansen Van Breestede resided on High Street, New York. He was a cooper.
In 1658 he was appointed marker, or gauger, of beer barrels. In 1668 he was
inspector of pipe staves and meat packing. In 1674 he was fire warden. From
Court Minutes, New Amsterdam appear: March 19, 1658, Jan Jansen Van Breestede,
cooper, being sent for to Court, appearing, is asked, as he is petitioned to
be marker of beer barrels, how much he will charge a piece? He places the charge
at one stiver per half barrel with approval of the magistrates. The magistrates
allowed him the time of one year, and shall enjoy him two stivers for each, but
the increasing or diminishing lies at the pleasure of the Burgomaster.
Oct. 4, 1661, City Hall. Paulus Schrick v/s Jan Jansen van Breste, demands 5
1/2 beavers for a barrel of pork. Defendant says there is coming yet to him
54 guilders and 7 stivers, wages from Johannes van Beeck, deceased, whose widow
plaintiff has married. Plaintiff says that does not concern him. Burgomasters
and Schepens, having heard parties, decree, whereas sewant, in the time that
Van Beeck, deceased, was indebted, was as good as beavers, that the debts shall
be set off against each other; therefore order Paulus Schrick to pay the defendant
10 guilders and 7 stivers.
Oct. 10, 1661. Same case. Paulus Schrick v/s Jan Jansen van Breste. Requests
reconsideration of debt, as according to the marriage contract he has nothing
to do with his wife's debts ... Defendant says that the plaintiff applied to
him twice for the account, he offered him payment, producing in effect two witnesses.
Plaintiff denies not that he offered payment but says it was in sewant... Burgomasters
and Schepens persist in their rendered judgment of Oct. 4th past. ...
Jan was an early settler of New Amsterdam coming there with his wife about 1636.
Engeltje married 2d 9/1/1641 Egbert Woutersen of Isselsteyn who died 1680."
Children were: *Elsie Janse Breestede,
*Tryntie Janse Breestede, Jan Jansen Van Breestede
, Dorothea Jans Van Breestede.
*Tryntie
Janse Breestede(61) died in 1711 in
Rosendale, Ulster County, New York.(3098)
She was born WFT Est. 1613-1635 in Breestede, Schleswig, Denmark. Parents:
*Jan Janse Breestede and
*Engeltje Jans. She was married to *Rutger Jacobse
VanSchoonderwoert on 3 Jun 1646.(3099)
From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:
"Rutsen is not, technically, a family name but was assumed later. The supposed
progenitor Jacob Van Schoenderwoert, or Jacob from the shining fields, a place
two miles north of Leerdam, Holland, and four miles from Vianen. His sons Rutger
Jacobse came in 1636 and Tunis Jacobse in 1640. Tunis resided at Beaverwyck and
was a man of some prominence. His descendants have as their patronymic, Van
Woert.
Rutger Jacobse embarked October 1, 1636 from Texel on the yacht Rensselaerswyck
bound for Fort Orange. He served as a farm hand on the farm of Teunisz from
Breuckelen for a term of six years beginning April 1637, at Fl. 100 a year.
In 1643 he was engaged as foreman on the Great Flats in Resselaerswyck at Fl.
200 a year and some clothes. From 1648 to 1654 he is charged with an annual
rent of Fl. 125 for a saw mill on the Fifth creek, he also had a saw mill and
a grist mill with Barent Pietersz as partner for which he paid rent of Fl. 500
a year, also on Fifth creek. About 1648 he owned a sloop plying on the Hudson
River between Rensselaerswyck and New Amsterdam. On April 4, 1649 he agreed
to pay Fl. 32 a year for three years, for rent of his house and the right to
fur trade. In October 1680 he and Goosen Gerritsz were authorized to brew beer
and of brewing free of charge, the beer needed for the households of Van Slichtenhorst
and de Hooges. Everyone drank beer, wine and whisky, at that period, water was
the only alternative. Tea, coffee, and chocolate were all unknown until the
close of the 17th century. Beer was served at every meal.
Jacobsen seems to have lived most of the time in Rensselaerswyck. In 1649 he
bought a lot on High Street, New Amsterdam, and built a house on it. In 1656
at Fort Orange, he mortgaged this house and lot for 1528 guilders. His wife
gave another mortgage on it in 1658 and one on her house at Fort Orange. This
was done to meet what officer Cornelis Steenwyck was trying to collect from them,
a sum of 5482 guilders. In the fall of 1660 he sold the house and lot in New
Amsterdam at public auction to Johannes Withart, his own attorney. Jacobsen
contested the sale in court, claiming the house and lot were not 'held up' before
they were sold. After several hearings the Court decided that Jacobsen had no
reason to start suit. As the suit was renewed, arbitrators were appointed to
decide the matter.
Rutger Jacobse was a prominent man in Beverwyck. On April 23, 1652 he secured
a lot in the town. He was Counciler 1649-1651 in Rensselaerswyck for which he
received Fl. 50 a year. In 1656 he was magistrate of Rensselaerswyck and laid
the cornerstone of the New Dutch Church situated at the present intersection
of State Street and Broadway in Albany. In 1661 he owned a share in Mohickander
Island. On Nov. 7, 1656 Thomas Chambers was haled before the court on which
was seated Jacob Rutsen. Rutger died before December 9, 1665. His inventory
showed silver and jewelry amounting to 512 guilders and 14 stivers.
Rutger Jacobse married (2) 3/6/1646 Tryntje Jans from Breestede who died 1711
at Rosendale at the home of her son Jacob Rutsen. Tryntje came to New Netherland
with her parents Jan Jansen and Engeltje Jans in 1636. She married (2) in her
old age 12/5/1695 Hendrick Janse Rosebloom." Children were:
