*Bessie
Bell Brundige(61) was born on 25 Jul
1887 in LaFox, Illinois. She died on 13 Jul 1962 in Elgin, Illinois. Parents:
*John Clayton Brundige and
*Christine Linington. She was married to *David
Clyde Divine on 14 Jul 1915 in Joliet, Illinois. Clyde was born on the
Sholes farm near Burlington, Illinois, and came to the LaFox area at the age
of 8 or 9. He was hard-of-hearing like many of the members of his mother's family.
He got his first hearing aid at the age of 17, and used a hearing aid for the
remainder of his life. When Clyde was 19, he had a cyst on his neck and had
the doctor operate on it. The doctor charged $7.00 for the operation and a couple
of calls. Clyde didn't tell his father because he didn't think it was too harmful.
Clyde rented the Brown farm (later owned by Donald Dillon) until 1914, when he
bought the adjoining farm to the east, for $22,000 with a mortgage from the bank
in Elburn.
Bessie was born on the family farm on Brundage Road, a mile east of LaFox. She
attended the LaFox School up through the middle of the 7th grade. Then she stayed
home a year, and then went to Jennings Seminary in Aurora for 3 years to finish
both grade school and high school. At her graduation, she recited the poem "Night
Hath Stars", just as her mother had done upon graduating from the same school.
When Bessie was 18 and starting to teach school, she bought herself a piano.
Her uncle George Linington of Aurora, signed a note for her. She paid $5.00
a month on it to the furniture store. She taught in rural schools near Batavia
and Newark, Illinois.
Clyde and Bessie went together for a long time, and eventually eloped to be married
in Joliet, because Bessie wanted to continue teaching, and it was not allowed
in those days for teachers to be married.
When Merilyn was 4, she fell down the basement stairs. She then had to learn
to walk all over again. When Merilyn fell, Mrs. Keslinger was called to tell
Clyde, for he was pulverizing at the South Farm (his father's farm). She offered
him a ride home in her car, but he took off by himself, and all the people in
LaFox were surprised to see him in such a hurry. He beat a train that Mrs. Keslinger
would've had to wait for. Bessie got quite excited about Merilyn's accident,
and it is believed that this is the reason she gave birth to Bill earlier than
expected.
In 1926, Bessie served dinner to her relatives. The event was called the "take-in"
dinner, because all of the Brundige family was there along with their take-ins
(in-laws), Clyde, Alta, and Judith. It was the only time ever when all of Bessie's
siblings were together at once, even though they all lived until 1935.
In the fall of 1937, Bessie served the "tail-end" dinner. Present
were Ralph Gregory (who soon later was burnt up in his house in a fire that was
supposedly set by his wife), Frank Root, Ed Cole, Carl Smith of Dundee, Paul
and Mary Brundige, John Brundige, Christine Linington Brundige, and Scotty Brundige.
Each of these people was at the tail-end of his family.
Ramon was killed in 1939 in a tragic accident on the farm, when a team of horses
pulling a load of hay was spooked.
In the 1950's, Clyde retired and rented the farm to the Foremans and Coxes who
owned the Farm Service & Supply Company in LaFox. He later decided to begin
farming again, and ran the farm until Bessie died.
After Bessie died, Merilyn and Lois had a new home built at 1501 Evergreen St.,
St. Charles, Illinois, and Clyde went to live with them there.
Newspaper clippings:
"Raymond Devine, 11, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. clyde Devine, of LaFox,
was killed today when a team of horses he was driving became frightened and lurched,
pulling him forward off his seat onto the ground and dragging a hay mower over
his chest and stomach.
The youth, who was helping his father harvest, died before Dr. R.G. Scott of
Geneva arrived at the scene of the accident. His body was taken to the Skoglund
undertaking parlors at Geneva and the inquest will be held tomorrow at 10 o'clock.
Deputies Walter Honert and Charles Anderson investigated the accident for the
sheriff's office.
The accident, which occurred at 10:30 o'clock this morning, was occasioned by
a faulty connection between the mower and the horses, according to Sheriff Marcus
Damisch, versed in such matters by virtue of his life as a farmer until he took
over the duties as sheriff.
The connection to the mower broke, frightening the horses, according to the sheriff.
The team lunged forward pulling the 11 year old lad off the driver's seat in
front of the mower which passed over his body as the horses charged forward.
He died of internal injuries within a few minutes."

*Daniel
Brundige(61) died on 9 Nov 1783 in
Saint John, New Brunswick. He was born WFT Est. 1724-1752. Parents:
Benjamin Brundage and Elizabeth Brush.He
was married WFT Est. 1746-1779. Daniel Brundige was a Loyalist who served with
the Queens Rangers in the American Revolution. He was probably from New York.
After the war, in 1783, he settled in Saint John, New Brunswick with his son
Nathaniel and Nathaniel's family, where he died within the year.
____________________________________________________
Problem determining parentage of Daniel Brundige:
There were at least 2, and possibly 3, Daniel Brundiges living in Fredericksburgh
Precinct about the time of the Revolution. There was the Tory Daniel who died
in New Brunswick in 1783, leaving son Nathaniel in New Brunswick and an older
son left in New York. Then, there was the Whig Daniel who died in Fredericksburgh
in 1789 whose executor was his son Nathaniel. This son Nathaniel continued to
live in the area until his death on Nov. 3, 1817. The tax list of 1777 shows
a Daniel Brundige and a Daniel Brundige, Jr. in Fredericksburgh, yet it seems
that neither the Tory nor the Whig could have been Daniel Jr., so it is likely
that the 2 Daniels were cousins, both grandsons of Daniel Brundige (ca1675-ca1730).
One of these was undoubtedly the son of Benjamin Brundige who died in 1761 and
who mentions son Daniel in his will. Since Benjamin was married in December
1728, his son Daniel was born at the earliest in 1729. This would make him the
correct approximate age to have gone to New Brunswick with son and grandchildren
in 1783 or to have named his son Nathaniel executor in Fredericksburgh in 1789.
We will list our Tory Daniel Brundige as the son of Benjamin, though this is
only a 50/50 proposition.
_______________________________________________
From "Settlers of the Beekman Patent", by Frank J. Doherty, 1990:
"Fredericksburgh was the name given to the Gore area of Pawling after the
division of the Philips Patent on 24 March 1772, and some parts of present-day
Putnam County. The two eastern long lots and the three short lots of the Philips
Patent were renamed Fredericksburgh and parts of Pawling became known as Fredericksburgh.
After the revolution the land confiscated from the heirs of Philips and several
Tory purchasers was sold off and the approximate original southern line of the
Beekman Patent was reinstated when Putnam County became independent in 1812."
p. 29
Fredericksburgh Precinct had a list of assessments on Loyalists: "A tax
on those inhabitants of Fredericksburgh Precinct who have sons gone off to and
joined the Enemy..." This list, dated October 9, 1780, shows for each family
the poundage [assessed valuation?] and the amount of tax. For Daniel Brundage,
the poundage was 334, and the tax was 12 pounds, 10 shillings, 6 pence. Children
were: *Nathaniel Brundige,
James Brundige.
*Daniel
Brundige(61) was born about 1675 in
Rye, New York. He died after 1730 in White Plains, New York. Parents:
*John Brondish and *Hannah Hunt.He was married
to *Mary Galpin WFT Est. 1689-1718. Daniel Brundige
was an inhabitant of Rye, New York in 1683. He is mentioned in his father's
estate, October 2, 1697. On March 13, 1721, he received a patent letter for
195 acres in White Plains. In 1736 he is mentioned as the father of Benjamin
in the sale of the mill in White Plains. Children were:
Daughter Brundage, David Brundage,
Mary Brundage, Moses Brundage,
Samuel Brundage, Tamer Brundage,
Daniel Brundige, John Brundage,

*John
Clayton Brundige(61) was born on 1
Sep 1856 in LaFox, Illinois. He died on 8 Feb 1945 in Fullerton, California.
Parents: *Levi Brundige and
*Charlotte Smith. He was married to *Christine
Linington on 20 Nov 1883 in Sugar Grove, Illinois. John C. Brundige was
born on the family farm at LaFox, Illinois. Being the youngest of 11 children,
he remained on the farm and took over the operation of it after his older brothers
had married and bought their own farms. After his marriage, the home was divided
into two parts, so that his elderly parents were in one part, and John and his
family were in the other.
Christine Linington was born in Canada and came to Aurora, Illinois with her
parents at the age of 5. After graduating from the Aurora High School, she taught
in a country school near Bliss Road (Sugar Grove, Illinois), while boarding at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Cole. It was there that she met Mrs. Cole's brother
John Brundige.
In March 1907, after Levi and Charlotte Brundige had died, John and Christine
sold the family farm at LaFox and bought a home at #18 Richards Street in Geneva.
They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there. He took a job repairing
and installing signals for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Christine's
died of a stroke in 1938, after which John sold the house in Geneva, in 1941.
From then on, he lived with his daughter Bessie Divine and her family in the
summers, and with his children in California, Charles, Lottie, and Clyde, in
the winters.
Mr. and Mrs. Brundige were first buried in a mausoleum at Riverside Cemetery
in Montgomery, Illinois, but were later re-interred at the same cemetery when
the mausoleum was to be demolished. Children were:
Charles Vivian Brundige, *Bessie Bell Brundige
, George Lyle Brundige,
John "Clyde" Brundige, Charlotte Gladys
"Lottie" Brundige, Lyla Ruth Brundige
, Vera Alice Brundige.
*Levi
Brundige(61) was born on 31 Aug 1811
in St. John's Island, New Brunswick. He died on 9 Feb 1898 in LaFox, Illinois.
Parents: *Nathaniel Brundige and
*Eleanor Clark. He was married to *Charlotte
Smith on 12 Jan 1837 in Chatham, Quebec. Levi and his brother came from
Canada together as far as Geneva. Levi stopped at Geneva and his brother kept
going, and they never saw each other again.
John Brundige attended a school on the north side of what is now Keslinger Road,
about 1/2 mile west of LaFox, according to Clyde Divine.
Charlotte Smith Brundige wrote a letter from Blackberry (LaFox), Illinois to
her uncle Ivory Fuller in Chatham, Quebec on August 30, probably 1863. This
letter is now in possession of Donald and Elaine Fuller, and has been transcribed
by Elaine:
"Dear Unkle,
I thought as you didn't never write to me I would take the liberty to write to
you. We are all in good health. There was a bad frost last night. The times
is hard. Crops is not very good this season we haven't thash our grain yet we
sowed 100 akers of land and sowed _____ grain, 40 of corn. We have 5 horses,
6 cows, 80 sheep, and have enuff to eat and to ware. Mrs. Arnel come from Declab
[DeKalb, Illinois] Friday. I nevery saw any person feels as she did. She had
reseved a letter from Mindle. It was uncommon. It was full of cusing and daming
us at the West for emposing on Louisa. Dear Unkle, please tell our folks Louisa
is treated as well as we can treat her. Tell Mother that letter was fawls, for
Louisa has not worked for her board since she came to the West. She last spring
went out sewing, got two shillings a day, and her health was not so good. At
sewing word (?) She came to our house and stayed till May, and a old lady came
and wanted her to do housework and sew. She would give her two shillings a week.
I thought it was for the best, for she hadn't anything to do only to set around
in the way, and she is there yet. I saw her a week ago. Her health was good
then, and I have not heard of her being sick very much. It is not only two miles
where she is. Our girls goes often to see her. I do not know why she wrote
for money. Arthusa gave her ten dollars. Eley gave her ten more. Arnel gave
ten also. She was taking sick soon after she got here. I think Eunice done
all she was able to do. They had two doctors to attend her. Eley and Arthusa
attend too. There was no one to blame for her sickness but herself. When she
got so she could ride on the cars, she came to our house, where she was sick
yet awile. We had doctors sat up night after night with her and done all we
could. Eunice has trouble anuf without Louisa making her any. Her children
are all babyes. Arnel is a good provider. They have anything that is wishfored
to be sure. The children is worshiped by him. Eunce is quick-tempered and frets
a great deal if he drinks as Louisa say he does they will have some trouble.
All the letters that come West he sees, and it don't set very well. Give my
love to Miss Mindle. Tell her we do not thank her for her letters nor will one
[own?] her for a sister. It was bad anuf for a drinking man to write. I expect
Mother has trouble anuf to home without any to the West. If you can read this,
please read it to Mother, Unkle Ivery. Unkle, now I wish you would write all
to me about Father and Mother and your children. Give my best love to Aunt Maritta
and her mother, for I did love her deare. Tell Unkle Ryneldo that I often think
of him away in the West. Tell them all that I have not regretted coming West,
that we enjoy ourselves well. Brundage says whorow [Hoorah?] for Linkon. We
all give three cheers for the Union. Brundage and Levi belongs to the lege.
The draft is not began in this state yet [some unreadable] Mabe you would like
to know about our children. Stelar is marred to widdower he is a very good man.
He is a farmer and very well to do. Levi a large heavy man. Amanda is keeping
school this summer. The rest is all to home. Tell John Cass Brundage sends
his love to him and to you all. I should like to go and visit you all. I wish
you to come west and see how we look now. Unkle, you must excuse bad writing
for I have not wrote a letter this ten years. My pen is like a rule sharping.
Unkle you will write as soon as you can will you give my love to all.
Charlotte Brundige"
From "Record of Kane County, Illinois", Beers, Leggett, & Co.,
1888, page 784:
"Levi Brundige, Sr., prominent among the early settlers of Blackberry Township,
is the proprietor of a fine stock, dairy and grain farm of 140 acres, situated
on Section 1. He was born in New Brunswick, August 31, 1811. His parents, Nathaniel
and Eleanor (Clark) Brundige, moved to Canada when he was nine years old, and
there the father died, in 1821, at the age of thirty-five years, and the mother
in 1845.
The subject of this biographical sketch, Mr. Levi Brundige, Sr., married January
12, 1837, Miss Charlotte Smith, a daughter of Johnson and Arethusa (Fuller) Smith,
who emigrated from New England to Canada previous to their marriage. Both of
Mrs. Brundige's grandfathers served in the Revolutionary War.
Mr. and Mrs. Levi Brundige have had eleven children.... In 1852 Mr. Brundige
bought the farm which he has since occupied. In public relations he has served

North Sugar Grove:
1837-1897
"Mr. and Mrs. Levi Brundige, Sr., celebrated the 60th anniversary of their
marriage, January 12, at their home, about four miles west of St. Charles. Relatives
were entertained at a sumptuous dinner, after which an informal reception for
old friends was held from 2 until 4 o'clock. Guests from Aurora, Sycamore, Elburn,
LaFox, Sandwich, St. Charles and Sugar Grove were present. Mr. and Mrs. Brundige
were married near Montreal, Canada, while William IV was yet king of England.
They came to Illinois in 1842 and spent a few years in St. Charles, but have
lived in their present home since 1851. Both retain their faculties to a remarkable
degree, considering that their respective ages are 85 and 81 years."
Obituary:
"Died, at his home near LaFox, Ill., Feb. 9, 1898, Levi Brundige, Sr., aged
86 years, 5 months and 9 days. He was born on an island near the coast of New
Brunswick, Aug. 31, 1811 and came to St. Charles Oct. 25, 1842, living in and
near here for half a century, and his friends were legion. For more than sixty-one
